Sing aloud and sing it proud

Blackburn at home, first game of the season, got my ticket, let's go make some noise... NO, let's sit there and listen to Blackburn singing away taking the piss out off us.

I?m not a season ticket holder anymore as I work away a lot, but that does not stop me supporting the blue boys. There?s nothing better than coming home from work and seeing who?s next at home and going to the match. The only problem for me is the lack off noise from the Goodison faithful, we all remember matches when the team just clicked and we could beat anyone, the crowd is unbelievable then. It?s just too negative at the moment and if the crowd is negative then it only stands to reason that the players will be as well.

Now I?m a believer of the supporters being the 12th man, when you go to a derby match then you know you're at a game, the noise around the place is unreal. Everybody is on screaming at the players to do well, come on get stuck in to them, singing along, come on blues come on let's have these; these are crap come on? You know you live every tackle, you want to be on there helping them, if they fall down you want to get then up, give them a kick up the arse an say go on lad go an have these.

Every game we play should be like this.. ?every game?. The crowd at Goodison should get back to when you sang and got behind the team even if there not the best out there. This team WILL COME GOOD, let?s not sing a little song for 2 minutes, let?s give our boy?s 90 minutes of Liverpool?s finest.

The crowd just needs to give a big extra lift to boys and raise the roof off Goodison again, the players need their 12th man back, so let?s give it to them.? COYB

Goodison comes alive on big occasions and in games when bad ref decisions go against us. Usually we need some sort of inspiration to get us going.

At home against Blackburn, the team was anything but inspired, the manager was deflated and the board appeared not to really give a toss. That hardly creates atmosphere. If you pay the spectators even half of what the "boys in blue" get paid then I’m sure we’d all sing our hearts out. It’s the overpaid players on the pitch that need to provide us with the spark and Moyes needs to stop teaching them to play hoofball.

One good thing we could do is encourage the new lads and give them some time.

If they get stick because it takes a few games to settle, the will take even longer to settle.

If they get big cheers for every little thing they do right, they will be so chuffed to be at Goodison and this will get the best from them.

Although we are always there, the inspiration and passion should also be the responsibility of the players!! Come on, the average player gets paid more in a week than most of us do in a year and they are doing something that they love!! For many of us, the matchday experience is an escape from the realities of work, family, debts etc so when the standard of play on the pitch is disappointing it just mirrors real life so no wonder some of us go quiet :0)

I’m glad you’ve brought this up Barry, because for a number of years me and my mates have been trying to get the singing going in the Gwladys Street.

It is very apparent that in order to get sustained singing in the match then you need fans to stand up in front of their seat. For some reason fans feel less self-concious about joining in with songs before they are loud.

It is also apparent that the reason why the back of the Gwladys Street dont stand up regularly is because there are obstructions to the fans views on the last couple of rows of the Gwladys Street when they stand. They then tell people to sit.

An extra problem is that when we do get standing, due to the front row standing, and the songs do get going no-one can hear us because of the poor acoustics and so songs dont spread.

The answer is to attach a roof of some sort to the bottom of the upper Gwladys Street so that it’s just above the singers, and also to remove the last 2 rows and add them to the front.

Yet year after year Everton have failed to realise this, and the man who’s job it is to realise this simplest of tasks has played a key role in the designing of the new stadium.

The new Lower Gwladys Street will now have no acoustics directly above them, and will now have executives directly behind them.

It is not as though the singers can relocate to the upper tier either as it is a safety risk for sustained standing in upper tiers.

Richard and Alan, it?s comments like yours that sound so negative. It's a two-way thing out there and them players of ours need a lift so stop the whinging and start the singing. As far as wages are concerned we know every footballer is seriously overpaid but that?s not the issue here.

It is the issue Billy. I’d love it if everyone sang their hearts out every week. I love it when I hear opposition players state that it’s an intimdating place too play at Goodison.

There must be about 20 posts a season on this messageboard about the lack of atmosphere at Goodison but it’s just reality, if the play on the pitch is crap, the crowd stay quiet.

Alan, while the poor play on the pitch will put many off from singing, there is a set of Evertonians who want to have more sustained singing.

The problem I have found is that in order to get the singing going for everyone else to join in with you need that set of fans to be all standing up together in front of their seats. It really does make all the difference.

It does take courage to start off songs and join in with them before everyone else and for some reason when everyone is standing up around you it makes such a difference.

These singers have traditionally gone behind the goal in the lower Gwladys Street but we can't stand up due to obstructing horizontal beams blocking the views of the fans on the last 2 rows when stood. Understandably they tell everyone to sit. Everton need to either scrap those last 2 rows or replace the obstructions.

For years we?ve been waiting but nothing, we ask and get no reply, so we carry on being frustrated in our attempts to get the singing going.

In the new stadium we?ll have to put up with executive boxes right behind us and no acoustics! It?s not fair, for years all we?ve wanted is a place at the back of the stand where we are not harming anyone to get the songs going so that they can spread to the rest of the stand to invite them to join in with the songs. We?re not asking for much...

I take your point Derek, I wish they would just bring back standing. I think, though, that peoples’ expectations are raised by games like the Fiorentina home game where the atmosphere was outstanding.

It’s a common symptom of every team though. Look at Man U - their own manager said last season their ground was quieter than church. A friend of mine was dragged along to watch the RS play Boro this season and said she was surprised at how quiet it was. Man City pipe in fan noise to make it sound more atmospheric. The Emirates is crap for atmosphere too. Home fans don’t even turn up at Blackburn, Middlesborough and Bolton.

I still think the ground needs a spark to get going and it’s not unreasonable to suggesta player on £40,000 plus provides it.

To be fair I have to agree with the so called "whingers" after the horrendous summer and laughing stock Black Bill’s lies made of us what did anyone expect for the first home game? Look at the attendance figures for the Pompey game, we were not on TV and it was a Saturday afternoon kick off so not an excuse other than the paying punters are beginning to show with their feet.

For once and it must be a record I also agree with Ged on something that I felt sorry for the kids as they didn’t chose to be there and be forced into games so early. I applaud them trying too hard and just hope the early blooding of them doesn’t ruin their confidence too much as we have yet to meet Man U or Chelski or Arsenal who could quite easily tear the squad we have seen so far a new one.

The fans pay to be entertained and we have all seen magical games were we lift the roof off the old lady but to just expect it every week isn’t going to happen unless the players we pay good money to watch bust a gut every game and play entertaining football we know they are capable of, we all love to see Everton demolish sides we just don’t see it often enough.

I agree with Billy and Barry with the way support at home games has gone. It is the job of every fan to support our team whether they play good or bad after, all we are true blue Everton fans and not whinging Liverpool fans.

It’s a reciprocal thing; The crowd respond when the team gives them something to respond too, and likewise, the team respond when the crowd give them something to respond too (sometimes).

It doesn’t always work like that though. The Semi Final of the League Cup last season was a good example. I came away with my throat the most sore its ever been coming from an Everton game, and what for?

The players can always rest assured knowing if they give, they’ll get. The fans on the other hand have learnt it’s not completely guaranteed they’ll get if they give.

Can?t agree with you more Barry, Billy and Pip!!! The home support over the past few months HAS been crap. We are Evertonians and should be proud of it, not goin on with ourselves like kopites!!! What are the new signings gunna be thinkin when they get their Goodison debut and you can hear a pin drop???? So pull your finger out and sing your heart out, because I will be... COYFB

I find it hard to support the team, when the board have told so many lies and wont own up to any of them.

I’ve been going to Everton since early 70s and unfortunately the atmosphere has always been shit.We don’t sing, if we do its a boring chant and it never lasts long. The odd game apart i.e. Bayern Munich.

Mike, it's been like that since the 60s; when I go to away games the fans are great but at Goodison it's poor most of the time.

I only sing in the bath and whistle on the bog so reckon they should remove the back five rows of seats in the St End and put some tubs in. They could put mics in the bogs and we could whistle Z-Cars.

Mike and Roy. The singing has actually been great in the past but only if you?re behind the goal in the Gwladys Street. The problem is with the acoustics making the songs loud and transferring them to other parts of the ground. If we could attach a roof to the bottom of the Upper Gwladys then the singers in the lower will have proper acoustics.
