The Mail Bag

Silent majority

Comments (28)

I am a relative newcomer to ToffeeWeb. I have been following the debates/contributions for a few months. The great leaders TM and RD (you know who they are) periodically shell each other over their entrenched positions regarding BK and Kirkby. They have their own trusty lieutenants and followers and employ skilled logistical support in the way of financial and business experts to support their respective claims.

Absolute truths are at play here ? BK is either an honourable, decent man doing the best he can, or a charlatan, bullshitting bastard intent on destroying the club. Trouble is, both positions can't be right, can they?

Some of the debate is well thought-out and intelligently expressed but when all else fails it often descends into abuse. At this point, messrs Kenrick and Lloyd will intervene and remind everyone that low blows, eye gouging and ear biting are not allowed. People are entitled to their opinions and it all adds considerable spice to the proceedings and makes TW the best show in town.

Personally, absolute truths bother me ? whatever they are applied to. My view is that life is messy and full of grey areas. The truth about BK lies probably somewhere between the views espoused by TM and RD and their legions.

However, there has been a recent tendency to mock those of us who do not wish to take absolute truth positions. We are called naive, blind sheep, stupid etc. Oh really?

I hope some of you read a contribution to the Mailbag yesterday concerning reaction to the Stoke game. It was all there - excitement, passion, rollercoaster ride of being an Everton fan etc. A guy from Australia (perhaps not appropriate to give his name) was providing commentary. He later went on to explain that he was doing this despite having a major health worry. He was offered support and best wishes. Personally, I found that very poignant and I wish him well.

It reminded me of what being a true Everton fan is all about. Keep up the war of words about BK and KIrkby - that's your right in a free society. Cherish it.. However, don't dare mock me and thousands like me for doing what we do best which is just getting on with supporting Everton. Remember this - we are the majority.

Thanks for that, Mike. A great nutshell characterization of the essence of TW... But by claiming to be the silent majority that 'supports the team' without delving into these more difficult off-field areas, you are in fact crowing about your de facto superiority to the rest of us, who dare to sully our hands in the dirty washing. Shame on you!

Michael K- that was an uncalled for comment and not worthy of your usual thoughtful feedback.
I think Mike is clearly standing up for those who read these threads and struggle to define their own position on matters such as BK and DK, considering the emotions such topics generate amongst us all - myself included as a semi irregular contributor.
This does not make Mike morally superior, nor any less of a supporter than those who do have a defined position.
TW is a broad church MK - lets not have the editors personalising the debate - leave that to the punters such as Marshy and Doddy

It is a broad church and rightly so! With the massive games coming upon us thick and fast now, with the team needing to bed in ans dettle immediately I think we need to turn our focus to spurring the lads on on Thursday night, under the Goodison lights. It seems obvious the back 5 (Howard included) all need to get their act togther immediately! Capt Pip Neville, has been the least error prone and the Jag, Joey and Jolly all need to snap out of it now. I reckon Castillo in the ?Claude Cars? role will be a big help.

We can keep a clean sheet on Thursday, so lets get right behind the lads and help make Goodison the Fortress it needs to be! Standard Liege have tasted Anfield?s kopshite infestation so it?d be good for them to experience the real Pride of Merseyside as we make the first leg count in preparation for the tough away game in two weeks...COYFBB! 2-0 would do very nicely, I think Arteta is due a goal and can see Tim / Yak netting again, bring on the Belgians!

"crowing about your de facto superiority to the rest of us" Michael could you please either clarify or amend that remark which I find baffling and offensive. The point I was trying to make was that YES matters concerning BK and Kirkby are vitally important and need to be fully discussed on TW. That has been the case and will no doubt continue. I fully support that in my post. However, what I was trying to say was that I have often read patronising, condescending remarks made to contributors who just want to discuss the team and their performances. If you want TW to be a broad church there has to be a space for us "middle-grounders" to do this without suffering abuse. I did expect some abuse from those that offer a more marginalised view. I did not expect it from the Editor.

Mike,
That is probably the most sensible post I have ever read on this site. Like you I think the truth about BK probably lies somewhere between the two schools of thought expressed on here with regular monotony.

What are the odds that your thread will degenerate into another squabble between the camps?

Perhaps I should have also have added that my Father (a Shropshire man) supported Everton for 70 years and I used to love to listen to his stories about seeing the great Dean, Lawton, Young etc play. My Mum’s family all supported Everton and were from Bootle. I’ve supported Everton for 34 years through more bad times than good. If you are trying to suggest that by my current location I am some pompous, prawn-sandwich eating arsehole who knows nothing about football or the good people of Liverpool you are wrong. Don’t ever suggest that I consider myself "superior" to fellow Everton fans. If I didn’t care so much about this club or its fans your comments wouldn’t have wound me up so much. Shame on you !

Bit touchy there Mike? I think it was merely a bit of friendly banter, attempting to highlight the irony of someone from the so-called ’silent majority’ posting a comment such as yours. Nobody ever called you out on your credentials as a fan, although I feel better now that I know your sandwich preference.

And surely nobody can take the closing line ’Shame on you!’, seriously any more?

If you did Mike, then shame on you!!

Good point Mike, you only have to look at whats happening at Newcastle to see how it all gets out of hand. They have a guy who has ploughed hundreds of millions into a club in a short space of time and they are marching thru the streets baying for his blood FFS!.

Everyone seems to have forgotten what happened at Leeds and I am sure that a couple more will go that way in the next year or 2 (especially when the rich boys dont like their toys any more). It's good to get back to reality, now that the transfer window hysteria has been left behind.

We had a great first 11 last season and the recent additions are positive and build upon the strong foundations DM has built over the past few years. We are still 1-2 quality players away from regular CL football and hopefully we can secure some sound financial backing (not like the clowns at barcodes, RS, city etc).

"Hurry up Evans, find a seat, my class started 5 minutes ago lad!

Right, where was I.....oh yes - Wyness....right, well simply screaming ’you’re a fat hopless fuck’ isn’t acceptable.

You need to lower your voice, add a little quiet menace and say calmly, ’Wyness you’re a fat hopeless fuck BECAUSE..."

See the difference?

Screaming? - you just make yourself look daft"

Phil,

was it AMDG at the top of the page or the bottom and what was the other thing we had to write?

I can still hear the encouraging words my particular favourite Jesuit guard (codename Butch) used to inspire me ..’Gray you will never amount to anything’ ..inspirational.

I appreciate this post has nothing to do with Everton so apologies to any non SFX who do not have a clue what we are talking about.

I never thought i would see SFX and happy days in the same sentence.

But back to the point, having looked at the mailbag yesterday I thought how good it was that the majority of posts were about matters on the pitch for a change. Nothing about finances, town planning, political battles or conspiracy theories. Let’s hope the football continues to take centre stage, afterall this is the one thing that brings us together in the first place.
Long may it continue.......

By the way, thanks Tom - but as you can see, I can’t really take the credit.

My writing skills were sadistically beaten into me by the Society of Jesus.

By the way did you know the SJ (Jesuits) fascinated Himmler to such a degree, he formed the SS with the same hierarchy.
