Friends of the Earth

It seems Friends of the Earth are campaigining to prevent out-of-town supermarkets like Destination Kirkby. They are petitioning Hazel Blears and I think it might be a good idea for the KEIOC brigade to back the FOE campaign here. Fighting for different causes but both want the same result.

Which is all well and good until something like Walton Hall Park comes up as an option — yes, I know, ever the optimist! — and suddenly we’re all in favour of digging up green space for our stadium. (Of course, by that point we’d have acquired enough money to give Goodison back to the City in exchange so no grass lost and the FoE crowd could relax!)
They published a document last year called Shopping the Bullies. Tesco get a particularly hard time off them. They highlight the tactic of TESCO using football stadia developments as enabling devices to overcome planning regulations. They also highlight how relatively small communities have fought and beaten TESCO's advances to take over their towns. I think FOE would be advocating a sustainable solution that protected the communities welfare and identity. Read the article... it's good.
