Castillo and Liege

Comments (27)

I was at the game last night, and of course we were our own enemy at the game, because if we had our defence in the form of last season, we would have won the game 2-0 easily.

A bright player was Castillo though, he scored an excellent goal, he broke up play well, and other than one awful pass, passed generally well too.

To sum up, on the Everton website, with regards to the away game against Liege, he said this:

"It is going to be a tough ask but it could be easier over there. They like to attack on the counter but at home they may be more obliged to go forward if they are at home."

I agree, because to be honest, Liege didnt impress me that much, Dalmat played well, and their strikers were very, very good but other than that, they wernt that impressive! I think Liege play to their strengths at counter attacking football, and if we get our defense sorted (please God, we have to!!) we can beat them.

I mean, I think Metalist Kharkiv were a better Standard than Liege!

We do seem alot more comfortable away from home, saying that though we’ve only played West Brom and the mighty Stoke.

We’ll have to wait and see really, I don’t think our defence has ever got to grips with the European style of play. One on twos in and around the box make them look very uncomfortble even when they where at there best.

On Castillo he did very well. He battled hard, scored a great goal and distributed very well. Looks a promising player.

Castillo- A poor mans Diarra but a thinking mans Carsley! I though he was alright to be honest though im sure(like many) he misplaced more than one pass.
I remain upbeat about our chances still as there were plenty of positives to take from the game.

He didn’t give the ball away that much to be honest, I don’t know where people get that from. A few people said the same about the Stoke game when he actually completed 90% of his passes according to the stats.

I thought Castillo was excellent last night also thought Neville had a decent game put the rest were pretty poor. Also surely there is somebody who can deliver a corner or free-kick better than Arteta he very rarely beats the 1st man so somebody else take responsibility because it must be affecting his confidence.

That Arteta set piece thing came up towards the end of last season i seem to remember. I thought it was his groin that was the problem then, but his confidence in his delivery was certainly hit and maybe that’s carried over to this season?

I reckon Arteta for free kicks and maybe Ossie for corners? He can hit them pretty sweetly.

As for Castillo, he played well I thought. As for the mis-placed passes, well, it’s easy to remember those I suppose, and i only remember a couple (both times he made amends by repelling the resulting attack) and on the whole he played the ball simply and quickly. He gave it away no more than anyone else I thought, same as the Stoke game.

Ben, the last time I looked, we were the team who was going to have to go for it at Liege. We have to score, because they have the away goals advantage, and they will probalby be confident of scoring against us at home. So, in all reality, they can still play to there strengths, by sitting back and counter attacking.

In my opinion, I thought Castillo was fantastic last night, and I cannot believe anyone could think any different, but its a game of opinions I suppose.

For me, he was mobile, strong in the air, broke up attacks well, used the ball very well (apart from one pass !), looked very composed, and was always coming short to collect the ball and start things moving.

Really impressed with him so far, he keeps things simple, but is very effective.

If we can sort out the horrendous defensive issues we are currently having, then we really must believe we can get through this tie. Liege are a good side and it is a big task ahead of us, but we can do it.

They are in a tricky position now though, because if they choose to defend their away goals for 90 minutes they risk us scoring and losing. I’m confident that we can score at their place, so they’ll need to come out a bit and leave more space at the back for us to exploit. We need a big performance. They are there for the taking! The worring thing is though the 2nd leg is after the derby, so the players might be knackered from it.

The deby is Saturday morning and 2nd Uefa Cup leg at Liege is Thursday night, so that should be enough recovery time :-)

In my opinion, I thought Castillo was by far the best player for us last night. He kept things simple and only gave away 2 or 3 balls and he made up by wining the ball back. Moyes has got another great signing from nowhere.

Oh dear...comments like ?they are there for the taking? in the second leg are wildly optimistic.

I saw a very competent. compact side last night whose overall play was technically superiour to the blues.

My point is how are they able to construct a team like that on a ?shoestring? budget when Premiership teams are spending millions and ending up with donkeys like the barcodes?

I?m not sure our current crop of players have gelled enough as a unit to go over there and win without conceding a goal.

Everytime they attacked with pace they looked like scoring against us.

I live in hope.

Dissapointing on the whole last night, everything Lescott touched turned to crap..... He didn't look the player of last season. Let's hope him alongside Arteta reproduce what we know they are capable of next time.
Castillo looked enthusiastic & bright... once settled in he could be a real asset.
Fingers crossed for next leg but I don't hold much hope.

Castillo was excellent, bettered only by Jags. He looks a real find to me, good in possession, strong and mobile. He should be able to forge a good partnership with Fellaini, who we didn’t see the best of at Stoke.

Is there still tickets for the 2nd leg? Or have the club sold its given quota?

I'm not based in England and might be visiting pretty soon (last-minute planning) and hoping to catch the 2nd leg if possible.

From our back four only Jag and Pip were up to the standard, I was very impress with Neville who had an excellent game - decent going forward and not single danger from his zone.

Lescott is lacking confidence at the moment and Yobo is Yobo - great for 10-12 games and then the usual lapses of concentration. He got away with one mistake at Stoke and this time was one too much.

Castillo impressed me in his first game and yesterday he put very good performance, powerfull, strong in the tackles, good vision and great goal.

It will be a tough away tie but I still believe that we will go through.

The post above about Castillo being a poor man's Diarra is totally stupid!

Castillo was excellent and take into account how long he has been here and how South Americans generally struggle to start with.

Very promising player. A real find.

Sadly Lescott was dire and Yobo not far behind.
we are lucky Jagielka is on hand to help out because those two are complete liabilities at times!

James Stewart,

To be honest there’s no shame in being a poor mans Diarra, if Castillo is a poor mans Diarra then where onto a winner in my opinion.

In terms of style I’d say they where similar. Strong, both have low centre of gravity, both are comfortable on the ball and both good defensively.

I think there is alot more to come from Castillo, I think at the moment he’s trying to keep it simple and bed into the side. Once he does I think we’ll start seeing alot more talent and quality coming into his game.

I think he’s helped Neville out aswell who has done well of late, he continually drops deep and gives him the simple option which cuts out alot of the hoofing. Nev’s had two decent games on the run.

I think it’s good that Moyes is taking chances on unknown players, people called it a panic buy but Moyes watched him against Rangers last season in the Uefa cup, he’s definatly followed him.

The South Americans at Wigan are doing well (Palacios, Valencia) hopefully Castillo can follow in there foot steps. He’s looked promising so far.

Castillo looked promising considering none of us were all that excited when he signed. His positional sense will need work asap - at times when we were defending, he was on top of Yobo and Jags and when the ball broke to the edge of the box the opposition had too much time to control and shoot. I kept thinking Cars would have seen the danger earlier and snuffed it out. He does have bits to his game that Cars doesn't though, even after two games it's evident that he can play a bit, so all in all a promising start from the big fella.

This was always going to be a tough one, and we can still win it. I’m a lot less depressed about our position than I thought I might be.

And as for Segundo (has anyone said it yet?), give us un segundo (a second), the first was magnificent. He looks like he can settle in to do a great job for us, with perhaps a bit more than that on top. Two weeks down the line he should be more comfortable, and we can be a real threat to them. 0-1 will do it. Please God don’t make it 3-3.

Ben Rogers,

I do think he needs to adjust to his position a bit but at times yesterday Osman and Cahill left Cass to do the defensive duties on his own. They ran out of position alot and left him exposed.

The midfield as a whole yesterday backed off Standard alot and didn’t hold there position. I don’t think Carsley would have faired any better, Standard’s quick and intelligent passing would have caused him problems as he was never the most mobile midfielder.

I had a nightmare of a summer like most doubts a plenty but after seein 2 matches with segundo makalele playin in front of the back four i have confidence once more! Castillo does everything so simply it’s magical! defo what we needed! and u could see towards the end hes getting more confident on the ball with the players around him not just the rocket he started dribbling instead of just playing 1 touch and what a ROCKET! More please please please!

I was at last night’s game and was generally disappointed with our defence, Lescott in particular looked lethargic.
Arteta must have it written in his contract that he must take every corner and free kick but he needs to vary his approach. On one occasion he was about to take yet another free kick and if he had just looked to his left would have spotted Castillo on his own, with a free route on goal, all it takes is awareness. I could spit.

It’s clear we are still very much a work in progress. Our impressive defensive record last season owed a great deal to Carsley’s ability to roam the area immediately ahead of the back four. He was always comfortable in closing down the opposition whether the threat was posed from wide areas or from central positions. His tackles at times were close to the edge. To date I have not seen any of the replacements demonstrate his terrier style approach which was so often crucial to bailing out the back four.

Lescott is clearly struggling with his form but what worried me more was the gaps which continually opened up in front of the back four. The defence appears decidedly uncomfortable without the added insurance of Carsley. With Cahill struggling to regain his fitness there was an onus on Osman however, against physically strong opposition the presence of Osman in a four man midfield is largely ineffective. However, I do believe there is real cause for optimism. Eventually I do believe we will get the balance of the side right. If Moyes had chosen to play Baines in front of Lescott I think we would have been a good deal more solid. with Arteta switching to the other flank we could really have tested the opposition down both sides of the park.
For our next game I’d personally like to Baines brought in to play down the left with Osman making way for Fellaini.

Leige weren?t that impressive?? Were we at the same game???

In the first half they cut us open more times than I can remember. Their pass and move play had our defenders lookin like a bunch of amatuers! They played football how it should be played, on the deck and to top off they?ve got height and pace in abundance. If the Yak played in front of that lot he?d bang in over 30 a season!

Class team. They were better than Zenit were at Goodison last season and IF they go through they?ll at least be get to the Semi?s.

Can?t believe we?re playin such a good team in the 1st round, just our fuckin luck.

Lescott was beyond tragic Thursday night. He?s clearly spending too much time with England. He?ll be back to his best after a confidence boost.

As far as the Belgium tie goes,we have to go out there and score more than they do. Simple. I have every confidence we?ll win out there. They did not impress me either I must say and I?d rather play them than another daunting trip to Ukraine.
Come on you Blues.

I don?t think I watched the same Castillo as most of the posts. I thought he was good considering the amount of games he has played. Thought his goal was a cracker - I hope to see a few more of those. However, I feel that he doesn?t look the best in a tackle, which is his most important role. I think he is already better than Carsley going forward but he is a long way off replacing Carsley in protecting the back 4. All I could see from where I was sat was a big hole between our midfield and defence. I do believe he has a lot more to show though and look forward to it.

There’s a lot to consider here. If I can offer one little ray of hope, its this. Moyes’ teams usually play better in the second half, and in this case that should be the second leg.

He tends to approach the opposition with a great deal of caution (you can call that respect or fear depending on your religion), and this is usually adjusted at half time. Our defence has the fault of lying deep when we fear speed, and maybe that was what happened on Thursday, to our cost. The speed got through anyway.

Its half time. It might get a lot better.
