Mike Riley - Derby Ref

Comments (21)

Having watched the Chelsea v Man U game on Sunday, and having read and listened to the comments regarding Mr Riley's performance, I was horrified to see he's been appointed as the ref for this weekends derby match. 20 yellow cards in 4 games!!

Have the people at the referees association and the PL completely lost the plot? Surely this decision confirms it.

I thought Clattenberg was poor last year but I'm not going to drag that up, but surely someone in authority was watching the match as well and realised he had an absolute shocker. He booked players for no reason and I'm really concerned about what is likely to happen in the atmosphere of a derby match.

Normally if you have a shocker at work you'd expect to get a rollicking or something else.... not handed another opportunity to make more mistakes on live tv.

I'll be watching the game this weekend praying for three things. One, our defence plays like they did last season and not like strangers. Two, if one of our defenders scores a goal it's in the back of Liverpool's net and not our own, and three, the match is decided by the ability and skill of the players ? not the incompetence of the official.

To be honest I can’t think of a ref who isn’t shite. It’s a matter of degree. And in Riley’s case he’s total shite. They’d be better of giving the job to his adams apple or to a lollipop. Nobody would notice the difference

Maybe he’s run out of cards from last game, and that’ll mean not so many get handed out this one.

Damn.. its the same card ;)

I dunno, since he picked on Manure so much, he’ll continue against the RED and give Liverpool a hard time this weekend?

If I were a betting man I would bet that Fellaini gets a red card as Stevie G falls gracefully to the turf in the penalty box after Fellaini runs alongside him. Not that Stevie G is a cheat of course ? he just finds the Everton pitch slippery...

I thought he called a good game on Sunday. Most of the cards were deserved and maybe both teams have not read about the respect campaign which limits surrounding the referee and bitching about calls. I thought he called what needed to be called and in fact the goal that tied the match was a yellow carded free kick awaded to Chelsea off a stupid, stupid chjallenge from the Kid. Has he gone backwards or what?

The only relief is that he probably hates them more than he hates us...:))

Completely off point but I notice that there are quite a few contributors to TW who are based in East Anglia. As an Ipswich-based season-ticket holder, it?s quite nice to know there are other die-hard supporters (or mugs; you decide) who do the 500-mile round-trip. The furthest I?ve seen a fellow Blue coming back is a BMW that turned off at the A14/A11. Is there an Everton Fan Club around here? If so, give me the details.

Back on point, Riley has, is and always will be a twat! Expect injury time, Torres time and then Stevie G time if it?s all level at the end of regulation.

In all seriousness, is there a good ref to get? They all side with the sky 4, it’s in the FA refereeing manual, so they have to. Cant remember who The FA chief Exec "supports"..

Did anyone see the decision that was given in the Reading game at the weekend???!!!!

And that was given by possible future Premier League referee ?Stuart Atwell?.

If that's the future, god help us....

Me nan could do better.... and she?s dead!

I will always have this picture of him watching Baros punch the ball into the net at Villa park and allowing the goal. Also, remember a pre-season testimonial for Howard Kendall a few years back. As soon as Riley ran out, the whole of Goodison started chanting "Fuck Off, Riley". What a great decision by the myopic FA.

Why didn’t they give the whistle to Stevie G and at least make it offical?

Who can forget the decision to give Man Utd a penalty at Goodison when Van Nistlerooy accidentally elbowed Stubbs. We were drawing 1-1 at the time. This man is second only to Graham Poll for strange decisions and incompetence.

Sean, the funniest thing over that "Reading decision", was reading Graham Poll saying it was "the strangest thing I’ve ever seen as a referee"...Has he forgotten the last world cup already?

But he’ll be the best ref in the world if he awards us a dubious pen right at the end which we convert to secure a win!

Seriously though, there are no decent refs left. However good they start off, they all eventually have stinkers - which should indicate that the game is now nigh on impossible to referee. Can ALL refs really be useless?

Or dare I say it Ray - Bent?

Clattenburg didn't just have a stinker last year he was totally corrupt.

Even Howard Webb, who I still rate as the best of the bunch, is giving some strange decisions this year.

We are long overdue a big decision in a derby but I won’t be holding my breath while that gobshite has hold of the whistle.

I have never seen him give us a sniff of anything, not even once. Not looking forward to work on Monday.

The likelihood is, even if we do get a big decision go our way on Saturday, our defence will still manage to trump it with another series of fuck-ups.. At this rate, they will bring a Danny Baker gaffs dvd out just involving Everton. Really if we carry on the way we are defensively then I don't think the referee will make much difference to us...

Here we go again, another red ref. I wonder what time in the game Gerrard or Torres will take there dive for a pen? And watch them kick lumps off us, then for us to put a few tackles in and have three booked...

Also, why is it Everton who have to kick off their game at 12:45 yet the game at Anfield will be 4:00 pm or later? This has happened for many years now, our supporters are right out of bed and off to the game, but their lot full of ale and bitterness and hate, getting every decision going. We should get the right player to man-mark Gerrard, he won't like that. Hey we havent won at home yet, maybe a good omen.

Unfuckingbelievable. Or not, I suppose, given the League?s need to aid, abet, promote and generally err on the side of the Sky 4. Riley has been THE WORST ref in the PL for years. As attention getting as Poll or Uriah Rennie; as corrupt as that prick who stole the derby from us last year. A real piece of work.
Andre Marriner, Lee Mason and Steve Bennett are, imo, three more or less competent officials. Mike Riley, wtf, forget about Saturday.

Just to point out that RS are equally annoyed with the decision to allow Old Mother Riley to referee the game.

Watching the Chelsea-United game at the weekend he totally ruined the flow of the game, blowing for silly free kicks when the option was there to play on with the advantage... Stupid bookings and bad decisions.

This is the worst decision to give him a high profile game like the derby on the back of his display in another very high profile game.

The derby is always face-paced and plenty of hard-hitting tackles....I can see it now. 7 yellow cards and at least 2 or 3 red cards....

Howard Webb is the only decent ref in the premier league at the moment. He tends to use common sense, which seems to be something that other refs do not want to use...

This game will be hilarious....
