Progress stalled or reversed?

Having got up at 7:00 in US to see the match, I was hoping to see a good Evertonian performance... What followed for the first 45 minutes was tolerable, but then started the shocker... What was our defence doing? And why do we hoof the ball out of the defence all the time? This was a horrible performance. Terrible.

People will say that this happened last year too... But that's part of the problem under Moyes, last year he played the same combination, Yak up front and 2 defensive midfielders (yes Phil is a defensive midfielder in his eyes) and the same result... Worse, the same performance, hardly any fight by Everton in the midfield.

I don't want Moyes out and certainly dont think "No steps Forward, 10 steps back" but what is going on is a complete halt. Why play the exact same tactics that failed last time? And this time it was at Goodison!

It hurts to say this, but Moyes is showing why Everton is called a small club at times. At home, on the back of a crashing defeat against Blackburn, still to score a point at GP and we play 4-5-1 with 7 defensive players and Cahill as second striker.. They play a 4-3-3 with 3 forwards.

I still like Moyes, he has taken a rotting ship and stabilized it. 2 UEFA spots were really good with the icing on the cake being the 4th spot.. Last year's UEFA cup and Carling cup performances were the best I have seen since I started to follow Everton in late 90s. And to be honest, I will not be upset if we loose against SL. They are a good side and we fought back in GP (admittedly to cover our own mistakes but still a fightback).

But this performance brings to mind what Michael Schumacher had said "Making a mistake once is human, making it twice is foolish" I cant understand why Moyes, with all his motivational ability cannot learn from his mistakes!! Why do we continue to play hoof ball and 4-5-1 at home?? Why bow down to the big 4 all the times? This reminds me of how Fulham had ground Arsenal to dust in 2003, with the same tactics... Surely a 5th place should give Moyes confidence in his players...

And I think the hoofing is a cycle started by the manager.. His lack of confidence in the players started it and now the players have taken a dent too and refuse to get out of this habit..

All in all, MOYES has to learn! And learn fast! Else Everton will be a small club!

After today's match, I seriously think we need a new manager who can really change the way we play Football. Enough of this long-ball tactics.

As an Evertonian from Singapore, I really hate losing to Liverpool. It just spoils my weekend. For the £3.5m a year we're going to pay Moyes, I think we could find a better Manager who can make Everton play attractive and effective Football.

I think this may be the begining of the end. After 35 years of supporting Everton, I did not even bother to watch the game, cancelled my Sky TV, and checked around full time for the result. I am begining to think Dave has been here too long.

Varun, go back through the archives and find an article called ? The Preston Perspective ? read it, add the last 6 yrs and see if you think that the man has change in him.

People don?t change they only become more so.

Steadied the ship??...probably

Win the Americas Cup?? not a shit show

Time to walk the plank??...more than likely!

I have never felt that Everton were in so much trouble as they seem to be right now. I for one am dillusioned with the way the team is playing and maybe now is the time to consider another manager to take the team that next step as Moyes does not seem to be able. He has built a good team but does not have the ability to make it grow.

We already are a small club, were have you been, the game wasnt even a sell out.
Can someone tell me why we changed the policy of cheaper tickets for obstucted views?
£38 for my friend from Norway, to sit behined a post, he was amazed EFC even charged fans for those tickets.

I’m not so sure the players want to play for Moyes anymore, letting go Carlsley and AJ (and perhaps even Al Irving?) haven’t just hit us on the field but also in the dressing room. We have no leader, we have in Arteta a talented individual who isn’t as good as he thinks he is, don’t we have ANYONE else who can take a free kick. We have young goalies bought in who must have been doing a double take when Carlo Nash turned up. We don’t even have much fight, which is something we always had in derbys. Loose to Standard and we don’t even have a season. God, being an Evertonian is a laugh, isn’t it.

It’s my birthday today and for the first time in too many years I DIDN’T want the kids to buy me a new Everton shirt... when am I likely to WANT to wear it !!!

By the end of next week our Season will be over, barring the impending relegation scrap and another domestic cup humiliation.

And this from me who was the eternal optimist with In Moyes we Trust in 10 foot letters through that shocker of a Summer.

So where are we know, watching a space.

Watching a space that we watched all summer? nothing
Watching a space an attacker will run into it ? nothing
Watching a space hoping a defender will cover it? nothing
Watching a space hoping that some pride, effort or commitment will miraculously appear
Oh and Watching a space for a Managers Signature?. Nothing

Moyes can?t be bothered, the team can?t be bothered and quite frankly after the last three matches I can?t be bothered.

I?m off to play with the kids and put this sorry mess out of my mind.

I wrote at the end of last season that if we found investment for the team between £30 mil and £50 mil the money would be far better spent by a new attack minded manager. I got slated for it. Moyes said towards the end of last season that we’d hit a glass ceiling because we needed investment to take the next step. Moyes has hit is own glass ceiling, his limited abilities are now there for all to see and he cannot take us any further.

As far as I can see its got to be one of the two following things that happen:

Either Kenwright is bought out of his position by a man with a massive fortune to plough into our ailing club or he has to be bold and suggest to Moyes that maybe the time has come for a change.

I think even Moyes looks a beaten man these days and his attitue has lost that edge. My qualm is that our football under him is pathetic to watch. Even Ronnie Goodlass has stated it takes Everton far too long to start an attack. We need too many touches before we bang it 80 yards from defence to attack. Why not play the ball on the ground? The only time Saha recieved the ball on the ground yesterday was in injury time and at least it resulted in him having a shot at goal.

One of the more glaring things I noticed was when I watched Match of the Day and after West Ham beat Fulham, Gianfranco Zola was interviewed and he refreshingly stated the as long as his West Ham players tried to play football they would not be told off by him for trying to do so... Credit to him for the attitude and what a pity that we have a manager and a coach who haven't a clue what the notion pass and move really means.

Why did we not try to get Zola as a coach in the summer? He is exactly what we should have been looking for. We keep hearing that we want to progress into Europe on a regular basis but we bring in Steve Round, a man with no pedigree as either a player or a coach...

I am always sick of Everton just wanting to be ?hard to beat?. That's the only phrase we ever hear about Everton. We are never bold. Why did we not bring Saha on at half time against Liverpool and try and win the game? We brought him on when we go behind as usual. Hull City on the other hand go away to Arsenal with THREE strikers and duly got rewarded.

People seem content with the idea that Moyes cannot go because nobody can replace him? That is a childish shortsighted outlook if ever I have seen one. You would think Moyes had would the World Cup the way people carry on about him. If I was working for a company and I was failing to deliver the goods then the boss wouldnt say ?oh well who can I replace him with?. He would just fuck you off because thats what business is about.

We have given Moyes a 5 year contract worth £17 million and for me I think that's just Kenwright all over. Happy to settle for what we have and have no ambition to really back up the big talk with action.

I don?t care what the reasons for this shambles are anymore. For years all we have heard about is the ?progress? the team and club are making. I never believed it. And what do we now have? A gutless Kenwrong, and gutless Moyes and a gutless team.

Something?s gotta change and fast ? Moyes should go after Thursday?s match whatever the result ? he?s mince. Kenwright, well, he should start a new musical called ?I?m a footballer, Get me outta here? ? held at Goodison every fortnight! The team have a lot to answer for too now and should all plead to be banned from the club with no wages...... let them get hungry... cosseted bastards.

Of course, knowing this club, nothing will happen and Ian Ross will be out saying that new investment is just around the corner! The fans have to take action into their own hands and stay away from this hilariously funny, desperately sad state of affairs. If only to help the bleeders understand......!

Varun, the reason why BK and Moyes have had it cushy, is because of fans who come out with things like "I will not be upset if we lose against SL."

The last time the turnover figures were published it showed Everton as being ninth in ?income received?. For the past two seasons we have finished above this level in the Prem so under Kenwright and Moyes, we have punched above our weight.

Outside the Sk 4 it is always going to be a rollercoaster ride ? ask Spurs and Newcastle! All in all, we?re in good shape and once the new boys have bedded in we shall again be in contention for a Euro place.

The excuses for not sacking Moyes are drying up faster than our prospects on the pitch. However, one that persists: Who would we get to replace him.

One name has never been mentioned; John Collins. He knows the game inside out having played at the top both in the UK and in Europe. He made a great fist of his short time at Hibs before internal politics and meddling got in the way of his high principles. He also holds the necessary coaching badges. Having worked with him for a short time, I know how highly he regards Evertonians and the region ? he often said his family?s days in Caldy were his happiest. Real tears from his wife and daughters when they left!

He is a ready made replacement who is young, ambitious, highly principled, committed to good football and much cheaper than DM?s demands.

Bill, please do the right thing and leave us a proper legacy before you go.

Alan, you say "All in all, we?re in good shape." We have lost our first 3 home games, shipping 8 goals. We have struggled against the 3 promoted sides. We have a defence that has leaked 16 goals in all competitions. We are continuing to play football that wouldn?t have looked out of place at the old Plough Lane. We are out of the Carling Cup, we have one foot out of the Uefa Cup, we have a manager who has been telling us for months, that he is a few days away from signing his mega contract. We have a chairman who hasn?t 2 brass farthing to rub together. So, could you explain why you think all in all we?re in good shape? Maybe you would see a lot clearer if you took off those blue-tinted specs?

Well put Brian, totally agree.
I am goin to watch Pompy v Spurs ? a game where both teams will play football and even the loser will give far more entertainment then we ever do. Oh and their managers both have a trophy in the bank despite only being at their clubs for a short time. How have they done this? Simple really, spent well and they play football the way it should be played ? they pass the damn ball on the floor!!!!!!

Brian, I honestly believe that it is not shameful to loose against a club that is equally good.. So that's why I would not be too upset with the loss. That's my take on it.

I thought Neville was one of our better players yesterday.

Fellaini was shite, Castillo would have been shite so Neville did okay. I think out of all three of them he looks the best bet right now with Hibbo at right back.

It seems we really are in a season of transition... hopefully we can get more competitive and then really kick on again next year.

Kick on next year? And if not, then the year after or the year after that or the year after that. We’ll be in "transition" as long as Moyes is in charge.

What are you talking about, John Charles? Phil is shite! Was shite at Man Utd and I can't ever recall him having a decent game for us. He is a poor right back with poor distribution and can't even tackle. Hibbo is also useless I can't believe these two muppets play in a Everton shirt. The rest of the side IMO are easily good enough for a top four finish if we can start playing like we did last season. We just don't have the balance in the side at the min.
