Think about it...

Last season, against the relegated sides, we gathered 4 points away from home. This season against the promoted sides, 7 points. From the corresponding 3 home fixtures last season we gathered 4 points as opposed to the dismal 0 we have this season. That?s a -1 differential in the league so far.

Is it really that bad to be knocked out of the Mickey Mouse Cup with the size of our squad? Regardless of the 2nd leg result, who truly believes that we can win the Uefa Cup with the type of form we have consistently shown towards the end of each season under Moyes?

So where does that leave us? In a similar position to the last 3 seasons. An excellent first team (when fit & available) with a little depth in the squad but nothing that will trouble the top 4. Our glass ceiling is now keeping up with Villa for the automatic Uefa Cup position. I?m sure there?s some good times left this season ? fantastic goals, clever play, last minute winners. But it really won?t match fans expectations from the end of last season. Who?s fault is that?

Well, judging by the mailbag, it seems everyone from Kenwright to Carlo Nash. Personally, I?m turning the utter frustration after derby defeat to a relaxed state of ?no expectations? for the rest of the season.

I know we won?t get relegated and there?s no chance of the top 4. So, for me, each game loses a lot of importance like those last few games of the season for a mid-table team. This is guaranteed to ease my stress and I may enjoy the flashes of good football we occasionally exhibit. Oh, Everton, you?ve fucked me again!

So we won’t get relegated? debatable at best. Top 4? not a chance.

Where does that leave us? IMO, more or less where we are now eg 12th.

If we have to be 12th, like we have a chioce, FFS can we be 12th playing decent footy. Excluding the top 4 and us, that leaves 15 teams, 30 games, 25 with the ones we’ve already squandered.

Go out and attack, play to win, not not to lose.

Will we do that? will we fuck, not with DM.

Get some one in smartish that will encourage the players to actually play.

It can’t be any worse than Saturdays capitulation.

Nice one Jerome, you have got it about right. I have lost expectation now and can handle just being an average side for the forseeable future until we are able to get investment to allow us to compete with the top clubs. For the first time in ages I didnt get pissed off when we lost on Saturday, it was just expected. Sad but true, I am currently a broken supporter.

Jerome.

Couldn?t agree more. I am now watching games as a football fan, not exactly as an Evertonian. Reason is, I have put my heart and soul to the club for the past 20 over years, and always in shit mood on Sundays after watching my team lose. So why bother?

Even before the ball is being kicked this season, we all know, at the end of the season, 10th will be a good season. Set the expectation low, and you will not be disappointed.

Moyes has brought us so far, no doubt about it. But I think it?s the furthest he can bring us. He?s a good manager if you want your club to move away from the relegation battle, or even to top half of the table. Should we move on? Or be another Villa or Spurs?

Set your expectation low... and enjoy the games ahead.

Problem is...
if we do finish 12th, how do we get back in to Europe again in the 2009/10 season?

As it will probably mean spending over £30 Million (and loosing a couple of players) just to keep up with Villa, Portsmouth et al.

This season we really need to finish as high as possible and have a half decent cup run. Else all the hard work Moyes and the players, fans and staff have put in will have all gone to waste.

@ Paul Momber - "a broken supporter". A good metaphor there mate. Sums up how I am feeling at the moment brilliantly. I also found myself thinking with 10 minutes to go on Saturday that I didn’t want us to score. The reason being that it would have just thinly covered up a whole load of cracks that really need to be sorted out properly NOW.

Why don’t you go to a game Jerome? Then you might not be so laid back.

It’s all been bad news since the last day of last season... what positives can you see? Scraping a win against Stoke and a point at Hull are the best feelings I’ve had about this club in the past 4 months... wow.

The transfer market hopelessness was just embarrassing.

The new stadium affair is tedious.

Moyes contract is becoming increasingly irrelevant.

Lots of injuries and most importantly ...

a series of inadequate performances on the field.

If we can’t beat Newcastle we have some tough matches coming up and will be in the bottom three come December.

Great stuff Jerome!

I hate to hear Evertonians talk about the "Mickey Mouse" cup. It seems to mean something to better teams than us. We really have no reason to be arrogant.

Alan Clarke... the reason he doesn?t go to a game is probably that he lives in Adelaide, Australia as it says at the bottom of his post!

It is a Mickey Mouse cup. That is why those richer clubs don?t fucking bother to put their best 11 in! Only when they reach the final! Win the cup and what?s next... Uefa Cup? We only got in less than £1m for reaching the last 16... what is £1m to them?

There are two way for us to get good players... Champions League or a billionaire. Uefa Cup get you second fiddle players. So how do we improve from here? To make things worst, our manager is a bloody defender! His priority is... defenders! or defensive midfielders!

At the moment, there are just no way we can challenge the top 4, at least not in the near future... Manager, Chairman, Stadium, $$$$....just too many obstacles.

It is now sooner or later... our best players will slowly get sick of the situation and move on.

Iain Turner... Jack Rodwell... John irving... Dan Gosling... Lukas Jutkiewicz... Jose Baxter... bring them on! Ooooh Myyyy God.

It may be a Mickey Mouse Cup, but we are a Mickey Mouse team - so to arrogantly dismiss it is ludicrous.

Our defence at the moment is like my six a side football team.

No Confidence.
Jitterey in dealing with difficult situations.
Lack of talking.
No clear leader.
Terrible distribution.

If this continues relegation is the only outcome.

So it’s a Mickey Mouse cup just because we’ve never won it ?? Arguably it’s easier to win than the FA Cup or 5th place in the Premiership as many teams field weakened squads so why should we turn our nose up at it ? Oh I forgot, apart from our poor start, we will either win the UEFA Cup or get 5th or 6th place to be in Europe again next season. Come on, get real. We have been beaten twice by Blackburn this season and they have a new manager with limited experience but lots of potential. (sounds like David Moyes a few years ago!). How long do we have to give David Moyes before he learns from his mistakes?

There is no chance Everton will be in a relegation dog fight this season. We didnt even turn up against Liverpool and the RS could still only put two goals past us and thats coming from the team thats supposidly joint best in the premier league at the moment! All that says to me is that the premier league is going to be wide open this year. Once Moyes has got his new players settled in a couple more games we will be on fire and sniffing around the european places once again.
