Everton are where we want to be

Remember those immortal words from the Toon Messiah? Surely you can, it was only four months ago. Our boys in blue had just decapitated the Toon Army at Goodison on the final game of the season, confirming UEFA Cup competition and 5th in the Premier League. For some (i.e. me) it was but a feeling of consolation, that we missed out on 4th (insert your reasons/excuses here), and that a flurry of transfer activity was about to commence and ?put things right? the coming season.

Four months on, Everton are to meet Newcastle United at Goodison again this weekend. Keegan is no more, and quite frankly, maybe Moyes too by then. At least, the Moyes of four months ago is no longer here in spirit. Newcastle are now placed 17th and Everton 14th. Newcastle is up for sale (again) and is entertaining the prospect of a Nigerian Consortium ruling the Geordies. Everton?s Destination Kirkby has been called in and we have no Plan B. How things change so quickly in football.

Maybe Keegan was too quick to comment too. He maybe didn?t notice the real up and coming club. A club that plays attacking, exciting yet effective football. A club that has a sound, prudent, resolute and ambitious manager and owner. A club that will not baulk to the Sky 4 and let their players defect at will and hold themselves to ransom. A club with integrity that is not based on any written statement found somewhere, but acting with due diligence in a league that is spiraling out of control and moral.

A club that is morally sound, epitomized by the sponsorship deal on their shirts, that is not about failed financial houses, alcohol, and gaming. But about children?s charity. A club that?s not about throwing millions of money to buy success, to gloat to their peers about their new plaything.

A club that is truly the voice of so many frustrated true football fans/purists all over the country (and world) that is sick to death with the Sky 4 monopoly and growing disparity between the poor and the mega-rich.

Keegan targeted the wrong club. It is Aston Villa — The True Peoples? Club. Bill Kenwright should take a leaf from their book.

We could learn a lesson or two from Wigan Athletic. I imagine that I was not the only one who spent his sunday afternoon watching them down the 'richest club in the world'. Anyone who did must have been impressed by how Wigan played.

Yeah, players like Bramble aren't the best, and in other games they will concede goals, but I was surprised the quality of football they played. Unlike Everton their fullbacks seemed comfortable on the ball, able to provide a potent attacking threat. The centre backs rarely simply lumped the thing up front, a la Yobo.

In players like Figueroa and Valencia they have players who are willing to look for the ball and RUN at players. Up front, the egyptian lad Zaki thrived on a bit of service from the aforementioned players.

In essence what i am saying is it isn't hard, Davey. Christ, if even Steve Bruce seems to be able to produce good football why can't we?

There is one fatal flaw in your argument Jason and that?s where you state they ?are not about throwing millions of money to buy success?.

I?ve just done a quick search on Google and according to one website and the Times, they spent in the region of £45 million.

If we had spent that kind of money then I don?t think we would be in the position we are now.

If we lose at home to Newcastle this week we really are in deep shit, a draw would be shite but a valuable point towards the relegation battle.

Jason - some valid points. Villa can afford a charity sponsor as they have a guarantor and sugar daddy in Lerner. We have BK. Simple.

Villa this season are trying to do what we did in 2004/5 and what we did last season. The test for them is a) can they do it (the season is 6 games old Jason) and if they do b) can they do better next season? Because thats the tough part (and where we are now) and it will be interesting to see their fans reactions if they cannot go one better each season.

And this "people’s club" is a load of nonsense. It makes as much sense applying it to the villa as it does to us. As a brummie I can tell you theres as many blue shirts down here on the streets as claret & blue. Just like when Im in Lpool - as many red as there are blue. The whole peoples club thing is just to wind up the redshyte, it doesnt work if you label the villa it...

Mark - I wouldn’t hold Wigan Athletic or their Chairman up as a model to emulate. Whelan bought control of Wigan RL Club and Orrell RUFC as well as Latics. Both he and Maurice Lindsay used Orrell to further their own financial plan - they bankrupted that club and forced them to pay rent to use their ground - eventually they had to move out - leaving their old ground to be used as a training facility for Wigan RL Club.
Yes Villa are a good one to emulate - their owner is hardly in the media and they seem prepared to be patient and back their manager. It hasn’t been an overnight success for O’Neil and he is probably more aware than anyone that they haven’t cracked it yet.
Yes the summer wasn’t a good one for us - but I doubt whether all the hatred that is given out to Kenwright is justified. Some of you have forgotten a certain Peter Johnson. How about some facts
1) He maintained a share in Tranmere Rovers - contrary to FA rules and came close to having both clubs banned from the FA Cup.
2) The disgraceful treatment of Howard Kendall.
3) This followed the equally disgraceful treatment of Joe Royle.
4) The lies told to Walter Smith re transfer funds
5) The sale of Duncan Ferguson - after which our then Chairman was not seen at Goodison Park.
Kenwright if he wanted to could easily have made a lot of this - he probably has enough Media contacts. He didn’t - we therefore didn’t become a soap opera like Newcastle. I don’t think Kenwright is right all the time - but I think that he has the best interests of Everton at heart .Some of you would do well to remember that - Billy Liar he certainly isn’t - read up about Peter Johnson some of you - now that is someone who is a cheat.

Michael Brien, while Johnson was in charge of the club, a certain Bill Kenwright was a board member, wouldn’t the board members have been involved in the day to day running of the club, and would have had a say? So while you mention Royle, Kendall and Smith, wouldn’t he, as a board member, played his part in the shenanigans that was going on at that time?

Telling Evertonians to ’fúck off and support another team’ - for having the audacity to proffer an opinion on another team - really is the lowest of the low.

Come on Ciarán - we all know that Everton is the greatest team the world has ever seen and no other team plays football better than us or has won more or has better fans or a better ground and we have the best chairman and manager and that anyone who doubts should be cast into the fires of hell for all eternity :0)

Michael Brien
it was a sensible post till you got to Kenwright:

"Billy Liar he certainly isn?t "

You must have been blind or deaf for the last 10 years then.

The man wouldnt know how to NOT lie.

Every word out of his mouth is utter bullshit.

"The money for KD is ringfenced" - It wasnt

"I would not sell Rooney for 50 million"
Technically correct.

"The cheque will be in the bank in the morning" Fortress Sports fund - It wasnt.

"I am looking for investment 24/7" - What for 8 years?

"World class stadium with the best transport links in the country"- If you believe that you are insane

"Dont expect me to know what?s going on at the club I?m only the chairman"- classic just like Clinton?s "I never had sex with that woman"

"David?s contract will be sorted out over the next few weeks" - it?s more than a few weeks since May and he?s still sat on it

"Watch this space"- we?re still watching all the spaces that appear in Everton?s MF
"Watch this space"

WE need a "Kenwright out" campaign to accelerate new ownership ASAP

Re Johnson- yes Kenwright was on the board - Chelsea have a board of directors as do Man City - but do you really think they vote over things !!?? No of course they don’t these owners run the whole show as did Johnson.

Re Kenwright - his biggest crime is that he hasn’t got billions - he’s not rich enough. If he was and could give Moyes a £50m+ transfer budget then you wouldn’t be criticising him. Perhaps you would like him to borrow as Leeds United did ??

This is just bollocks... the noses come out when they get promoted and go into hiding as soon as they are relegated.

As a Villa fan, I enjoyed reading the original piece as it’s nice to see a positive slant from a fan of another team. As a team I do think we’ve got a lot to be proud of, and people slowly seem to be catching on that we’re an (emerging) force to be reckoned with.

As for Everton, you’ve got a great manager in Moyes, but I fear you may start to be left behind by clubs with richer owners who obviously have more clout in the transfer market. Martin O’Neill finally realised this summer that shrewd, "value" signings can only take you so far, and that sooner or later you have to spend some serious money.

Unless you get bought out I really can’t see Everton competing for much more than 6th place in the near future, but anyway, good luck, and hope you get to stay in Liverpool.

Martin Rissbrook, as much as I admire Villa I will always be an Evertonian, contrary to some of my ’fellow’ fans comments on this thread. I believe one needs to grab the moment and take a risk, if one is ever to be successful, be it in football or life itself. Once it’s gone there’s no turning back, and someone else will take YOUR chance instead. For ’us’, we missed the opportunity in the past few seasons to invest and I feel Moyes’ enthusiasm has expired along with it. It takes huge investment as you mentioned, to break into the top4. And it gets harder each year especially with Man City joining the party. But once you knock one of the old guards off and into the CL group stages you’ll get your just reward and turnover to balance the investment. As for Everton, we like to shout ’we won’t sell Rooney for less than 50million’. But all we do is shout. If we had the balls to bench Barry unless the price is met (18million was it?) we wouldn’t be a nursery club for the top4. But I shall stop there as some of ’us’ don’t like to hear constructive criticism and believe the pond they live in is all there is to the world.
