The curse of the number 9 shirt

Comments (19)

I think that I have this stat correct but the last time that an Everton number 9 scored a goal from open play in the premiership, was on April 20th, 2005 when a certain Duncan Ferguson netted against Manchester Utd at Goodison. Since then James Beattie, Duncan Ferguson and until the Fulham game, Louis Saha, for 3½ years no-one scored in a number 9 shirt.

Ajay, I sort of get the point, but it isn’t actually the damning statistic you claim. Nobody has had the No.9 shirt since Beattie left and how long ago was that.

Having said that, Beattie never got proper service due to the Managers tactics.

New chant;

Starve the Yak, starve the Yak, starve the yak, he will not score, starve the Yak, he’ll play no more.

I have been told that in Nigeria the Yaks local accent is the equivalent of Geordie. here

Wye eye man, I’m off tee Spurs, me.

I don’t think Big Dunc was wearing number 9 in 2005, he was wearing the number 10 then I think (a prophetic gesture to mark 10 years since his previous winner over the Mancs?)

The Yak likes to wear the same number as number of goals he says he’ll get this season. Needs 23 this season to make up for last year’s underperformance. Feed him FFS!

What about the curse of the number 2 shirt?!!! No number 2 scored since Watson?s last goal in the 2003-04 campaign (I?m actually too lazy to look up what the exact fixture was). Watson didn?t score in the following season, Krøldrup didn?t score and since then Hibbert has the number 2 jersey but never scored in it!

Not to be picky but technically Ferguson’s goal in his last game was from open play - the penalty was saved, the rebound was in open play.

I was about to say the same thing John. I watched the new Big Dunc DVD yesterday and even though it is a rebound it is still in open play, so another "fact" that is actually incorrect.

Yes but John & Tony he was wearing the number 10 shirt, not the number 9 shirt. I think we are forgetting the stat is about a Everton number 9 not scoring for how long.... Not a number 10!

Saying that it still has been over 2 years mind.

However it wasn’t being used last season.....so in hindsight, the first post is a bit daft really.

Sorry fella!

Didn?t Beattie score a quality goal against Fulham anyway from about 30 yards at the end of 2006? He was awful in 2006-2007 and was rightfully 5th choice ? so not sure what the point of this post was!

Baz he has the No 9 shirt for the 2006 season but did not score from open play...... because he had forgotten how his feet worked.

From the OS site on past players

"Beattie was handed the coveted number 9 jersey ahead of the 2006/7 campaign but it proved a frustrating season for the forward, who made more appearances as a substitute than starts.

He also failed to net from open play, chalking two penalty kicks during the season."

ps: I am not trying to be pedantic.

Ajay,

It could have been a great post if 100% accurate!!!Nevermind good effort.

Derek Thomas, speaking as a Geordie (and proud of it) Blue, if you?re going to take the mickey out of the Geordie dialect, get the spelling right i.e.
"Wye eye man, I?m off tee Spurs, me" should have read "Whay aye man, am off ta Spurs, me man"

Other than that good post!

James Beattie was never anything but overrated ? slow, couldn't pass, was sometimes able to hold the ball up and had one decent season for Southampton ? awful player, awful signing.

I?ll never forget the day he ran up and headbutted Carvalho on the back of the head and got sent off ? hilarious!

James, I thought the funniest part was that he did it twice and then still tried to act all innocent.

Beattie was actually sent off for butting William Gallas. This thread seems to have developed a desire for absolute accuracy so I couldn’t let that go......

I didn?t think it was Carvalhio... I wasn?t sure who it was, I was think Makele initially.
