Exiled and happy to be so

Comments (27)

I am a self-exiled person in Southampton, I choose to live here despite being an massive Everton supporter. In my younger days I had season ticket in the Gwladys Street for about 15 years and I missed it like mad. So, as part of my 40th, I thought I would take my partner and my two girls to watch Everton against Fulham. I was quite convinced that she would be impressed as she is a Southampton supporter and has made me watch that shite on a number of occasions.

So looking forward to the match that we left Southampton on Friday moring and drove to my parents home, where we would spend the evening and leave early on Saturday am without the kids to watch the "sure fire winner" and sink a few beers in town before staying overnight in Liverpool... fucking cracking day I thought!

How wrong can somebody be!?! I mean, Phil Neville wrote an article saying we had turned the corner and our season started now!!! I seriously hope not! The game was dire, with the exception of Peanuts, Yobo and Osman; we were a side that looked worse than the teams Smith assembled! Yakubu cannot get off the ground, Cahill looked lost, Arteta... well he was his usual piss-poor self, Screech looked poor, Roger was shit scared of getting the ball, Neville just hoofed it.

Half-time I thought it could not get any worse, she was taking the piss and she supports Southampton!! Second half: worse, yes worse! Who holds the button with self destruct? They were clearly pressing it on a number of occasions. Eventually, with 5 mins left, we score... fantastic! We win and I have watched what can only be described as "drivel" ? and we have 5 more years of this crap.

For once, and for the moment, I am glad I am exiled in Southampton and I will certainly not be rushing to watch another game. Hopefully we will get better but, with that lot, I seriously doubt it.

Your first mistake was chosing a game that is always dire to go to for your 40th.

It still is a sure fire winner, as we won!!

I am also glad you are exiled in Southampton, as 1) You actually listen to your partner on footy matters when she supports Southampton 2) You are seemingly upset that we won.

You go to 1 game in 15 years and you only now start complaining about "5 more years of this crap" ahh well, see you in 2023.

Well said Tony.

Chris, there?s no way you can tell me that we were better in the early 90s than we are now, when you seemed to enjoy being an Evertonian.

Gary.

I said I had a season ticket for 15 years, not 15 years ago! Why can?t people on here read?

I actually agree with Chris on many of his points. I'm from South Devon, and it's 602 miles round trip to watch the blues at Goodison. I go up a few times a season, but the way we are playing at the moment doesn't inspire me to go at all at the minute!

And then you get so many games on Sky these days so you think to yourself, why drive 602 miles when I can watch it on the box ? so yes, fast becoming another armchair fan. It's not just about the winning, Tony Williams, to play attractive football once in a while would also go down well.

The Fulham game was awful to watch (on tv). But to say penuts played well is wrong, he was well below his usual standard, he gave the ball away nearly everytime he got it! I like him a lot and believe he he's made a difference to us sinceMmore competition in wide areas needed.

Tony Williams - excellent post mate.

Simon - Roger is the name bluekipper have given Lescott as in Roger Lescott

I can?t believe the "oh I haven?t been to a game for years, go to one which was shite but we still won but I won?t bother again cos it was shite" attitude.

If only Tony, Gary and Brian could read, take in what was said and reply to it, but no they read what they want. I never said I have not been in 15 years, it states I has a season ticket for 15 years, quite different meaning. Never mind... I now know why I do not miss certain types of people from Liverpool.

What seasons did you hold your season ticket in the Gwladys St for Chris? Did you go back to the same spec?

Other than your comment on Cahill, that must be categorically the most bizarre appraisal I have ever read on here.

Chris, you still playing for Charlton ??

Seriously though (without any other reference to Chris ?The Rash? Perry ) Saturday was awful. However, I do take exception to the fact that you state Osman wasn?t dire??? I thought fabulous cross apart he was awful and probably our worst player ! He has been great at times but I still feel as though he should only be a squad player however who?d replace him ??

Anyway, that point aside I can?t have you stating that you?ve watched Southampton on a number of ocassions and yet you refer to our match as ?Drivel??? Come on mate sort it out!! Yeah we were shit but we won and will play a lot better throughout the season.

ps: I wouldn?t swap Yak for McGoldrick or Cahill for Surman now they really are DRIVEL!!

Chris,

It wasn?t pretty by any means but we actually tried to play it on the ground, yes we were lacking confidence, guile and flow but Everton tried to play it on the ground I don?t know what do you mean by hoofballs but there were considerably less than in Bolton?s game.

Finally maybe I was watching different game but I think that P. Neville is leading by example right now and playing really good, urging his team-mates to go forward, putting crosses in, I don?t have any complaints about him. In fact it was his determination that carried the ball to Osman and lead to the winner. For the record I also haven?t seen Pienaar giving away so many easy balls, he had one of his worst games in Everton shirt but it happens to everyone from time to time.

P.S. who is Screech? I know who Roger is but Screech?

Chris Perry, you sound like you’ve haven’t watched football since the 90s let alone supported the Blues.

Do you want us to go back to the "Dogs of War" tag, or would you like another shot at getting into Europe this year??

I know he’s bang out of order implying that watching Soton may be better than watching our beloved blues - but there’s no getting away from it; we were crap!

I go to all home games and about half away - have done so for years (about 25 - 30 of them!), so what’s wrong with wanting to see a bit of football every now and again from the blues? We certainly aren’t getting any this season.

Incidentally if the poster thought Saturday was crap (which it was) thank god he didn’t see Bolton. That was probably the worst PL game ever.

Won’t stop me turning up each week and my heart pumping for a blues win though. Once a blue .......

I don’t really go to the football to be entertained. If I want entertainment I’ll rent a DVD. I go because I want to win. This club pumps through my veins as if I were part of it, so I can’t just sit there and critique the level of entertainment. It’s sport - I want to win, first and foremost.

If we can win by knocking it about a bit then so much the better because that will please Everton customers like Chris Perry who go to the GP and expect something in return. More of them means more money for the manager. I’m not a customer. I am part of the club.

I understand you’re point, but it’s getting dangerously close to ... serve up any old shite and we’ll still pay to watch it.

To go down that line disrespects this club’s heritage. For nearly 80 years we have been known as the ’School of Science’, dubbed by Steve Bloomer. We weren’t known as ’coldn’t give a shit as long as they won!’ Now I recognise that on (many) occasions we haven’t served up ’football of the highest scientific order’, but that shouldn’t stop the fans having those aspirations.

We should strive to be the best but accepot that at present we aren’t! What we should never accept is ’winning is all that matters!’. Because to me, winning is important but not the be all and end all. Otherwise we should just consign Dean, Lawton, Mercer, Hickson, Egglington, Collins, Stevens, Labone, Young, Kendall, Ball, Harvey, Royle and all the other heros to the bin.

No doubt I’ll get slaugtered for speaking out against ’6 points from 6’ but I genuinely believe there should be more to Everton than dire football that all of the above and many more would be ashamed of.

I agree with you Steve, though it is interesting to reflect that it was Joe Royle (himself an Evertonian ’School of Science’ hero) who created the ’Dogs of War’.
Big Joe (like Davey Moyes) is a pragmatist who, rightly, came out fighting when our backs were to the wall to keep us in the top tier (and won us the FA Cup!)
He left because the Chairman would not give him the funds to develop the team as he saw fit. Moyes seemed to hit a similar buffer this summer. The quandry for me is why after 6 years and promisiing signs last year do we seem to be standing still or even going backwards?

Why malign the man for calling it as he sees it?? He is an EFC supporter who is dismayed at the poor standard of football on show lately... don't knock him for being critical, he travelled here from Soton in the hope of seeing his team wipe the floor with Fulham!! What's wrong with him being critical of a team he loves that have disappointed him?

I am another true blue for the past 50-odd years who is also disappointed at the absolute rubbish being played at Goodison. EVERY Evertonian has the right to be angry when his team is playing awful football and SCRAPING points by spoiling tactics and just endeavour... I'm another fan who wants his team to play well enough that commentators cannot knock us and give us back our PRIDE in the way we play.

Good on yer Chris, I will aoplogise for the so called fans who cannot see past their ?BLUE specs?.

No Trevor you will not apologise for "the so called fans" at all. You certainly won?t apologise for me, as I stand by every word I typed.

Nothing to do with "BLUE specs" but everything to do with another moaning post from a pissed off fan (aren?t we all) with a confusing view of how certain players performed on the day, for one Peanut was dire.

In fact I give up, dodgy post from a "so-called fan" who is strangely getting stick from his bird who supports Southampton, who aren?t exactly high flying in the Fizzy Drinks League.

I thought Peanuts and Osman were piss poor on Saturday. Yes, Osman provided the cross for the winner but apart from that he was missing from most of the game. He has been playing deeper these last two games that I’ve seen but that’s no excuse for being a no show. Peanuts has caught Neville Syndrome and couldn’t pass the ball to save his life. Fair play to Neville, he played the best game I’ve seen him play in the last year at least.

Interesting that people keep making disparaging references to Joe Royle?s ?Dogs of War? team. Joe Royle inherited a soft team several points adrift at the bottom of the league. Within six months, this team battled out of the bottom three and won the FA Cup. He departed after Mr Johnson was unable/unwilling to back him with transfer funds.

Contrast this with the present manager, who inherited a side 15th in the table, has had carte blanche and guaranteed security from the chairman and consistently breaks our transfer fee record. Seven years on, we don?t look like we?re nearer winning trophies and the football is poor.

And people wonder why the attendances are dropping...........
