Team for West Ham

Comments (205)

I was just hearing that Cahill and Arteta are doubtful for West Ham due to injury. Together with Fellaini, that puts a big hole in our midfield... However, I do believe it may give an opportunity for Rodwell, Castillo and Baines to figure.

I have been puzzled by Baines's exclusion ? particularly with Lescott's indifferent form. Having said that, I have advocated for some time that Baines may be more suitable as a wing back to give us more width with Pienaar on the right flank.

In a 4-5-1 formation, which I think we should go for, that would leave Osman, Castillo and Rodwell in the centre. If Arteta or Cahill are fit then I might put them in ahead of Rodwell but feel that Osman and Castillo should play anyway as it won't do any harm for Mikky or Tim to be "rested".

Not a problem! Our creative manager/leader will do something like this in midfield:

Pienaar, Osman, Vaughan, Cahill, Anichebe

Or,

Pienaar, Neville, Osman, Cahill with Saha up front.

In either case I will head for the nearest pumps, which don?t open here until 1600 GMT unfortunately.

God forbid that we field a balanced, creative midfield, which we are capable of doing!

Jay Harris, the OS mentions Peanuts and the Yak as being doubtful. No mention about Cahill/Arteta.

I think the boss will go with:

Saha
Cahill
Pienaar, Ossie, Castillo, Arteta
Lescott, Jags, Yobo, Neville
Howard

Although, personally, I would like to see Baines instead of Lescott, on present form. Although, if Pienaar is injured, we may well see Baines playing in left mid-field - not a bad thing in my opinion.

Looks good tonight folks. COYB !!

We need to be changing players around to stop the rot setting in. Those playing now are almost guaranteed a first team place barring injury. Use other players not getting a look in like Rodwell, Castillo and Van der Meyde. Get Osman on the operating table if he needs his knee sorting and make them challenge for places before they become complacent. We need to see competitive competition for places to knock us up a gear or two.

The unhappy Hammers are in freefall with a novice foreign manager, financial trouble with heavily indebted Icelandic owners and have gained only 1 point from the last 15! They also have injuries and suspensions to some of their better first teamers. Our away form is pretty good and our lads’ confidence is high at last, especially compared to the happless hammers.
Taking all that into account, assuming Yak and Peanuts are out I think the team (in an ATTACKING 4-5-1) should be:

Howard;
Neville, Yobo, Jagielka, Baines; Anichebe, Osman, Rodwell, Cahill, Arteta;
Vaughan.

Subs: Castillo, Lescott, Anichebe, Gosling, Baxter, Valente, Nash.

This way, the team can be 442 or even 433 when we have the ball, but is flexible to be defensive and tight with 5 in midfield/defence when we need.
With the right support, the energy and movement of Vaughan, Anichebe and Cahill can wear down the stretched hammers. Later on we can bring Saha on for Vaughan or Anichebe (or Cahill) to give his extra class the chance to shine against worn down opponents.
Sounds great in theory to me, but will it be used and be effective in reality? My crystal ball is up the creek so I’ll wait and see...COYB!

Despite starting with two forwards, it looks like we?re playing 4-5-1 with Vic dropping into midfield with Cahill playing off Saha. If so, that?s one hell of an indictment about our midfield depth. Just thank our lucky stars that Davey didn?t opt to start Hibbert with Captain Fantastic moving forward.

Moyes is absolute pants, his tactics are so defensive and dour that it makes me embarrassed to be a blue. £17M to play this shite ? anonymous Osman, hoofball back 4, Anichebe is lazier than the Yak and no one has the ability to keep possession ? It's painfully obvious that Cahill isn't cutting it at the moment and we are trying to play a system which uses him in a big way ? and it ain't working.

Anichebe is like a lost soul out wide, he hasn't the pace or strength to get past either full back. Arteta has just had enough by the looks of it, there is no-one in space, the passing is slow and often to players with West Ham lads 2 yds away.

Overall the worst 45 mins I?ve seen this season ? thank god for Howard, Neville and Jags ? the rest might as well as go back to bed.

We played poorly for the first half but never looked like caving in.

In the last 20 we were the only team going to win. Still loads to improve though - we still lack pace up top and a need to find the elusive holding midfielder but you can’t doubt the team’s spirit over the last month or so.

Shame some Evertonians can’t show the same spirit - irrespective of your opinions.

Granted we have to improve a LOT, but winning ugly isn’t exactly a terrible habit and success breeds confidence.

With Lescott getting back on the goal sheet, Saha finding his touch and the Yak, Peanuts and Screech to come back in (plus Cahill to get back up to speed and Arteta to hopefully find some form) it’s suddenly not looking so bad after all. Shame we blew UEFA so early though.

A shocking performance for eighty minutes. The lack of movement to allow whoever has possesion of the ball to make an easy pass is a disgrace. Its the same every week. we can not do the simple pass and move required to keep the ball for any length of time so it ends up being hoofed and coming back at us putting way to much pressure on the defense.

Against the teams with better forwards we look like mugs but against the more average teams we do have the quality to score ourselves so get our fair share of points . It aint pretty but unless we get a sugar daddy to pay for half a dozen geuinely world class players then its what we are going to have to watch whlist Moyes is in charge with the current crop. 3 great goals to win it. Would I part with £35 and a day of my weekend to watch that no chance. Id rather do what more and more people seem to be doing and thats watch games on the internet streams if the fall in attendences is any indicator. If we played better football then id have no probs going to games and parting with my hard earned cash. Good to see us a get a little run of points going but we are shocking for the majority of most games we play in.

For the record, I never said we were playing well and for the record I?m not a Moyes apologist. I?m just fed up with fans who jump down the throat of the team / manager / other fans from 20 mins in.

However, everyone else was commenting on the game - you directed your comments against people who were posting on the site. We all were commenting on the performance. And then followed it up by suggesting we were all like kopites.

Jeremy, I am not a glory-hunter either ? if I was, I'd support Man U or the Shite. I'm just realistic to know a 3-1 win away from home is a good result; yes, we didn't play well for much of the game, but neither do Man U or Chelsea, that's life.

I chose to look at the positives, that we are winning and we don't even have to play well, it's only a matter of time before we do an then I'm sure you'll be happy,

If others on here are going to call Moyes a shithouse who can't defend himself on here then I will feel the need to defend them.

West Ham game: we played badly for 80 mins. Happily we have the ex-Man U trio who really won the game for us. Saha is a world class player.

But seriously folks, some of the comments here in the mailbag are way over the line. My RS friends are more polite than you guys here to fellow Evertonians.< By the way I like Tony Marsh's comments because they are filled with passion and true feeling for the club. When the team is not playing well why on earth you can?t say that aloud?

I like to think I didn?t chose instead of being chosen when I saw THE match in 1966. My kids are born with it. My Everton team would play like the standard says: nothing but the best is good enough. I can?t see that happening right now. Still, we have to support the club and maintain the dignity and humanity that?s in all of us. So tell it when it hurts but don?t insult your fellow Evertonian because we got to stick together. COYB
