Plan A or Plan B?
Comments (34)
So we are all frustrated (well some are) about the lack of any real transfer activity thus far. It seems to me that Moyes is somewhat in limbo at the moment, just like last season.
My theory is that we have a very small budget this year and Moyes's Plan A was to get 1 or 2 cheap buys (maybe a steal from the lower divisions) and a couple of loans. However, in the light of a possible Lescott move, he now finds himself possibly looking at a Plan B in which case he can get a Moutinho type player Lescott goes, but that may not happen.
So maybe he is waiting until that deal is dead in the water until he makes any significant dealings this summer, because it's pointless him buying X, Y and Z for £2M, when in the event of Man City actually paying £20M+ he can say get A, B and C.
Oh another long hard summer!

Admittedly they all went elsewhere, but "wow" all the same.
Especially given Jagielka will be out until November, assuming no setbacks?
You hit the nail on the head in the second sentence - "just like last season."
I think a few of us were expecting that...
Very few deals are being done right now except at the very top end.
I personally agree with MattTraynor why disrupt a back 4 that was second to none for most of last season especially with the Afcon coming and Jags injury. £20 million wouldn't buy you that back again.
So I hope Moyes concentrates on a good quality 'keeper, a top notch creative MF and a top notch holding MF. I would love to see Manny Fernandes back but I guess many wouldn't.
Oh yea just another thought: didn't we sign a 10-year deal with Kitbag? A record deal in fact. Haven't we sold more season tickets this year than last already? Plus plenty of revenue from the new stores opening? And add to the fact we spent nothing last summer due to the sales of McFadden and Johnson. So my question is:– Where the fuck is the MONEY, BILL??????
At this stage Howard (although far from perfect) has proven himself more than worthy of marshaling our defence and with money scarce (an understatement if ever there was) then I dont think unsettling a defence which could be minus Jags and Lescott would be very wise and for who? (Hart? too in experienced and not good enough yet , plus why would city sell etc, etc).
If we do our usual ’on the never never’ money then it has to be either a central midfielder or a right back. In my opinion it has to be a RB because for all his effort and industry Neville offers far more as right back and can deliver some fantastic crosses.
For fuck's sake, he wasn't even that good!!
Secondly, and also @ Ian Tod, I would not have a washed-out, over-the-hill wage-drainer like Scholes within a 40-mile radius of Goodison, especially if it entails Rodwell going the other way any time soon.
I know we want to push on for 4th place but also we should appreciate what we've got — a Premier League place (not a Championship place) and have finished in the top 6 for 3 seasons in a row.
We should not take our Premier League place for granted, it's something to treasure. I bet Newcastle are looking at the Prem now and realizing just how precious their place was and that they wish they appreciated it more when they were up there.
I think Moyes's record goes something like:
7th
17th
4th
11th
6th
5th
5th
We should really appreciate that. I'm happy with wat we've got. I want to push on to the top but I know we won't without money... therefore, instead of getting worked up every summer about signings, I just accept that it will be a slow summer and I appreciate a 5th-place finish next season.
You sure your name ain’t Bill?
Well, I must be in a minority (of one) as I’m not the least bit frustrated. It's (checks calendar...) 5 July and the transfer window has been open for all of 5 days — that's less than a week! By my reckoning (doesn't bother to check said calendar again), we have about 6 weeks until the season starts and about 8 or 9 before the window closes again. After the past few pre-season transfer dealings, why would any Everton fan expect 3 or 4 top quality signings during the 1st week of the transfer window? — It just doesn't happen; we can't compete... get over it.
Moyes needs to bide his time, he doesn't have the resources of the Manchester clubs, Chelsea etc and so needs to wait to see what he can pick up after they have done their business.
Also, we can't afford to pay players $40k+ per week for close to 2 months whilst they are not even playing.
Franny writes: "People on this site really need to get over the stupid fucking obsession with Fernandes! For fuck's sake he wasnt even that good!!"
Ok, so perhaps we need to forget Manny but he is a good player and plays in a position that the Premier League has a real dearth of talent. If we had Manny, Arteta and a good young holding player in the middle of midfield, we could be awsome. He was just the sort of link player we need to take us forward. This much is plainly obvious to anyone who has played the game — hence the huge amount of criticism we fans give our defenders for hoofing the ball. The simple truth is, they have very few options with little movement in front of them and their only option is usually Arteta or a long ball behind the opposition defence or down the channels... very basic football I’m afraid, very English in style too.
Finally, Ian and Jay mention the Ginger Ninja — thanks but no thanks.
Presumably it’ll be another predictable summer of ’Kenwright out’ and ’Elstone is a liar’ for not telling the world exactly how much we have to spend.
No doubt, it would have been nice to have a couple of new names wrapped up by now but it’s not like the deadline’s next week.
Apart from Owen to United, the top four are yet to make a significant signing.
Chillax and let Moyes do his stuff. Don’t forget, this was a man who could have walked last summer. There are no such distractions this time around.
Forget all the lame, bullshit conspiracy theories and general hate towards the board. It’s about time some on here actually started supporting the club, rather than slag them off at every opportunity.
I spend most of my working hours buying & selling so have come across most tricks when it comes to hammering out deals. Now looking at the City move for Lescott on the surface it looks like Everton are in a strong position to get a £20 million plus deal as: City are desperate to sort out their defence, have limitless cash so must realise they won’t get anyone cheap. Lescott is English and an international which again add value and is also on a long contract, so in theory we could pull up the drawbridge & play hardball. We will also have to pay a sell on fee to Wolves so City need to cover this. Taking all this into account we should be asking at least £20 mil plus players as our opening gambit.
City no doubt will try to weaken our hand through unsettling the player and turning his head with their riches. No doubt also that they will make much of his past knee problems to force down the price and get him on the cheap. HOWEVER, the BIG problem will be our lack of money and everyone including City knowing that Kenwright is skint. This means they are effectively playing a game of high-stakes poker whilst fully knowing the other players hand. They’ll know that it’s alot easier for Bill to sell cheaply and get their lower cash offer, rather than try to beg & borrow funds from the banks or his increasingly disinterested and elusive ghost backers.
If I were City, I’d tempt & unsettle the player then wait and let Kenwright sweat. The longer it goes on, the more pressure will build and I really fear we could end up selling a prize asset for below the current inflated values, that more wealthy clubs can hold out for on theirs.
I commented earlier in the week that the club don't sign anyone early doors to save on wages and I think this is a valid point. You swallow all the BK bullshit if you must but some of us ain't so easily fooled as we have seen it all before.
Placing your faith in Bill Kenwright can seriously damage your sanity, so I recommend you dont do it!
Though they won’t admit it, we’re reliant on the Sky money and I still maintain Lescott will be sold to supplement the Kirkby finances, no matter how they dress it up.
For Carter and Kenwright in particular to talk about how wonderful the players we’re linked with and in Carter’s case to say that our injured players coming back being "like new signings"; you almost feel they’re deliberately trying to wind the fans up.
Swallow the bull if you want, but we’re a middle ranked club punching above our weight. By the time we’re able to spend, most dealings will have been done and I would happily lay a wager that we will have fewer senior contracted professionals on our books at the start of this coming season than last.
Personally, these days I think most players ARE money oriented and, along with Real Madrid and Man City paying stupid prices for players, I think the clubs just up the price (any player Man City are linked with and the price goes up). It all just prices us out of the market and, due to the lack of funds, we just cant compete with that.
Of course, that's just my opinion anyways.
People are crying "Groundhog Day" because it's got similarities with what happened (or didn’t!) last summer just from a few days of inactivity. So what, that means that, because the sun comes up tomorrow, it's gonna be exactly the same as today????
Look at the other clubs and who they’ve brought in so far... United: Owen — free transfer; Valencia — £15m.
Liverpool: Johnson — £19m.
Chelsea: Zhirkov deal almost done. Sturridge and Turnbull probably done.
Arsenal: Vermaelen — £13m.
City: Barry — £12m; Santa Cruz — £16m; Tevez nearly completed.
Villa: no-one.
Spurs: no-one.
Fulham: no one.
Bolton: no one.
Wigan: Hendry Thomas — £5m.
I’m not bothered with the rest because realistically, none of them are gonna be competing with us next season.
Point is, the only teams that have done anything so far are the ones with money burning a hole in their pocket (City), a massive need to fill a psychological hole (United) or clubs prepared to pay over the odds to make sure they get their man (Liverpool, Chelsea.) The only other teams to be active are the newly promoted ones who are blurting their new PL money all over the shop, because the know their old teams is really, deep down, shite.
So what I’m trying to say is... calm the fuck down. Let's start slagging people off and calling for a Goodison inquisition when we’re actually getting left behind by the other normal, sane football clubs, not the freakshows, bloated cancers and soul-less playthings.
While this has a snowball's chance in hell of coming off, I’d love us to make only a couple of major signings if we have any money around the £15 to 25 million mark (I know that’s likely a pipe dream). Go out and get Moutinho and Cana (They are both club captains). Solves right side problems, gives us a very strong defensive midfield allowing Phil to push back to defence and solve our right back issue.
Get a couple more in on loans, around Castillo level just to have as cover and if we are lucky a striker. I think Jo is a chance with the way City are spending. He won’t get a look in considering the calibre of strikers they are going after and the fact that they don’t play in Europe this year.
Now doesn't pre-season start on the 18th July and it's now the 6th, that means really this week will be the week we see some names appearing holding a Everton shirt at the back of the Echo.
The names that have been touted so far I have only heard that Clint Dempsey is virtually done, although I don't personally rate him, but I don't pick the team.
Paul Scholes, didn't he say that he wanted to go to Oldham before finishing his career, as he is from there? M’Bia has his heart on getting the biggest pay packet. Moutinho, the fat waiter will have this guy. Kyle Naughton, Villa are now sniffing round.
Also comments from Carter doesn't get the heart racing saying the normal when we get our injured players back etc...... this is a worry.
Myself I can see dopes like Viduka signing a one-year deal, Jo in again on loan. Samba going in to take over from Lescott when he goes to City. Micah Richards snubbing Everton because we won't pay the wages.
I don't see the future being bright until investment, we have reached as high as we can get, a Cup run is our only chance of Silverware and the Europa League and Carling Cup start before deadline day and we all remember what happened last year.
I have tied the noose and I am tilting on the rickety chair... one good thing though, just look at Newcastle's away kit makes me laugh every time.
It's great to be a blue!
I get a bit annoyed with people who write these kinds of sweeping generalizations about the Evertonians who are using this website. Firstly, you’re the only one I’m aware of who has come anywhere close to a ’conspiracy theory’ with your dubious "facts" about the impending Lescott transfer and unreasonable demands for vocalization by the player.
"General hate towards the Board" — I feel confident in saying no-one hates the Board or has shown any hate toward them. Some fans are critical, yes. Fans have always expressed their criticism, be it crowding in the manager after he swaps out their favourite player, or dispatching cushions from the old main stand... Your insinuation that these fans are not supporting the club because they are expressing their criticism or frustrations on here is shocking in the extreme and oversteps our established line for acceptable comment.
This site is for Evertonians to discuss such issues without having the validity of their support brought into question. Kindly rescind and desist.
"...we can’t afford to pay players $40k+ per week for close to 2 months whilst they are not even playing."
So you believe the club needs the marginal income boost from 1 home game to fund transfers, against the huge benefits of having new players on board for pre-season. Or "paying them £40k a week to do nothing" as you call it.
Is this a nonsense competition?
------------------
And there’s me thinking that we procrastinated so much that another more attractive team was able to come in and offer him a better deal!
My point exactly, a mercanery, open to the highest offer, wherever that may have been. Moyes showed a bit of faith to take him from Pompey’s reserves and handing him a central role in a better team, but he jumped at the chance to sit on Valencia’s subs bench.
No doubt the usual culprits scrounged and then dragged out his transfer (third party ownership probably did not help), but really, are you telling me that he impressed you second time around in even the remotest way?
I’ve said my peice on Fernandes (merely in disgust to a seperate viewers posting) but unless absoloutley necessary, vow not to post on this subject again. A’men.
Valencia did in a day — what we failed to do in over a month.
That says it all.
They did in a day what we failed to do in a month because, as I understand it, their league is governed by different rules on part ownership (apart from Man Utd and the RS... who are allowed to make up their own rules as they go along).
;- )
"Groundhog Day". What complete bollocks... unless I am missing the logical reason why the analysis excludes the signing of Yakubu, Saha, Fellaini, Piennar, Neville, Arteta, Cahill, Baines, Lescott, Yobo, Jagielka and Howard.... All signed under the current regime! And this excludes some current squad members and some who have come and gone!
This transfer record has so far taken us from the edge of relegation to consistently top-6. Moyes has an excellent transfer record. Why are you panicking? Are you the sort of person who starts booing the team after 10 minutes if we are not 2-0 up yet? It isn’t over until the final whistle, you know.
The progress and record so far has earned the guys the right to show what they can do for a bit longer. Hurl your bile if their upward progress falls away later.
How dare you use actual facts on 3rd party ownership to challenge the more sensible opinion that it was our boards fault and not Fernandes and his agent double crossing us..!!
Tom Brown... are you mad? surely only Per Kroldrup should be mentioned when discussing Davey’s transfer record... dont mention all those others..
Terry Owen... If Mr Kenrick says that he is CONFIDENT..nobody hates the board... well you should be ashamed of yourself for even suggesting it..
Me...I love my team blindly,my opinions have no basis in fact and I believe that apart from the Sky 4..we have been the best team in the league for ages..ok so we dont pass it like West Brom..and our chairman hasn't (yet) been extradited for corruption... but I can see light at the tunnel's end... LOL
Sean McKenna — You list those players like they played a major part in a relatively successful season last time — they were all bit part players, with probably less than 15 appearances between them, and I would personally rather have lower paid youngsters warming the bench. Try to see that releasing these frees up wages for additions to the squad, and be positive that those additions will come by the end of the month — if they haven’t, join the masses in condemnation, but at least give it that long.
