The Mail Bag

A cheap 5th place team

So I was trying to explain to my girl how football transfers worked today. First I had to point out how players weren't on sale like they were dresses on a rack but how negotiations worked and stuff. Once she got that she began asking how much a normal player cost compared to old Ronaldo and Mr. Kaka. I pointed out how most first teamers on Everton would fetch around £10 to £20 millon with the exception of maybe Neville due to age. But then it dawned on me we didn't pay anywhere near that for any of them with the exception of 2. Using ToffeeWeb to jog my memory, I compiled a list of the actual money we paid for each player we had to buy.

 Howard £3M Baines £6M Yobo £5M Lescott £5M Jagielka £4M Arteta £3M Cahill £2M Neville £3.5M Pienaar £2.5M Fellaini £12.9M Yakubu £11.25M
All of this equals basically £58 million. A lot of money but not compared to the outrageous fees teams are paying these days. Many of our so called rivals pay £15M for all their players it seems.

Knocking some of that off and saying all these players listed would cost about £10 million just to average it and adding say Rodwell, Vaughan, Osman, Anichebe, Hibbert... yes they'd not fetch as much but some of those other players would cost quite a bit more. Anyway, 16 players altogether: £160 million roughly. So if we closed up shop right now and just cashed out, we'd make about £100 million from what they cost. Not too shabby!

Just thought it was interesting and some decent defense of the business Moyes does.

I’m afraid that your excellent post has left me feeling quite sad. Because it reminds me of playing cards using a tuppeny box of matches as stakes. Along comes the fat rich kid from down the street — the one wearing shoes — who saunters up and produces an industrial size box of lucifers. Game becomes meaningless as he proceeds to out bet everyone else.

Still, if we flog everybody, we could afford to buy two Ronaldos.

Albert, buy 2 Ronaldos? Maybe, but we couldn’t pay the mercenary wanker’s wages! Not to worry, it is a TEAM game and the sum of the players well fitted together can be greater than the sum of the individual parts.

This was made plainly clear in the second half versus Man Utd at Goodison last last season. Capt Pip’s tackle galvanised the team (and crowd) to perform as one and (but for the inside of a post preventing Yak’s winner) the game was turned around.

The Team we have is pretty fucking good, if we can keep all the best players and ’uppgrade’ the midfield/right side, this summer then we can really push on. COYB!

I dunno Joey, but I think you are over-valuing a couple of our assets there mate.
Arteta, Lescott, Yagielka and maybe Fellaini and Baines, but I’d be suprised if any of the others would command £10 Million plus. I include Tiny in that, as he will be 30 this year.

Although, I would add Rodwell to the list.

On second thoughts, I would add the Yak that list too, although not until he’s proved he’s the same player after his injury.

Stating the very obvious, a player’s value (as per any saleable asset) is determined by the meeting point of the price one party is prepared to pay vs the price the other party is prepared to sell.

Unless sold, any player’s value is guesswork. Hopefully the powers that be view our key players as very expensive, because it is not easy to replace good players in a team with great spirit and togetherness.
