Lorik Cana

Comments (32)

Lorik Cana is the perfect anecdote for our midfield. The Albanian beast is the perfect buy for Moyes the Messiah this transfer period.

He has everything in terms of attributes and the temperament, aggression and desire that suits the Toffees. He would absolutely compliment the current squad, imagine Cana, Cahill, Fellaini and Lescott lining up for a corner!!!! Every team would be shaking in their boots! The opposition would also be defecating themselves fronting up to him defending. Think same desire as Carsley but with extra height and ball skills.

View this link it may be long but is very much worth watching till the end: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wTbB5y4Zrk

And at £6 mill... definitely good value. Can pass, dribble... and... er... tackle.

Although we may need to put a leash on a player who would probably be proscribed under the Dangerous Dogs Act.

It’d be a race to end the season as the most booked player between Cana and Fellaini. I can’t imagine many teams bullying us though.

I like the look of him and at £6m it’s a no-brainer. I think Arteta and Cana in the middle with Fellaini/Cahill operating in front of them would be formidable.

Yeah from what I have read it would be a good signing. Also, set-pieces are so important in football nowadays, it would be interesting to see what percentage of goals in the Premier League last year came from set-pieces.

That video is in the ’spatter movie’ style you sometimes get on YouTube, but he defininitely has the makings. Our reputation for being a hard team to beat would move up a gear or two, but nothing wrong with that — we’ve been bullied out of too many games in the past.

Have we ever signed an Albanian? They used to shoot hapless yatchsmen who drifted into their territorial waters didn’t they?

Hahaha, I’ve never seen so many two-footed tackles in my life. He’d spend half the season suspended!

If Moyes could settle him down a bit then he’d be perfect for the holding role. Not going to hold my breath on this one as I don’t trust anything in the papers anymore.

I too would love to have him, an excellent player and captain. However, I wouldn’t like to see him brought in at the expense of another Pienaar or Arteta, a player increasing the quality in a wide role but also having the abiltiy to play centre.

It seems like we might be gazumping Hamburg on this one... sounds like he’s holding out for Everton to come and get him.

Not sure why we’ve been linked with these defensive midfielders (Cana and M'Bia my lord)... Neville will have to be in the starting line up somewhere, and if Naughton comes in it won’t be at RB.

We really need a playmaker who can help out when Arteta and Pienaar aren’t available. Who knows, maybe we have more transfer kitty than first thought?

Can I just ask why Marseilles are selling him? And why were they willing to sign that idiot M’Bia to replace him?

Has anyone here scouted him enough to know how good he actually is? I’d never heard of him before this summer transfer window.

Can you imagine him snapping Gerrard’s legs in November?!!

The lunatics in the Street End would love him!!

Alan, Marseille are selling him because he fancies a new challenge and they’ve just gone out and bought 3 new central midfielders: Edouard Cisse, Stephane M’Bia and Lucho Gonzalez — remember him anybody?!

I'm baffled as to why fellow Evertonians on here keep mentioning that we don't need a holding midfield player because we've got Neville... are your lot being serious? If we're to push on next season and seasons to come, then having Neville in the holding role is not the way forward.

Don't get me wrong, he filled in very well last season but we need better quality in there... someone with more power and aggression, someone comfortable on the ball who will accommodate Arteta and Fellaini/Cahill really well and Cana fits the bill and for that price, £6M, we shouldn’t be messing around and get him signed up!

I also saw on another website that his team mate Valbuena is surplus to requirements at Marseille and doesn't fit in to Deschamp's system. I saw he would be available for as cheap as £4M... Now £10M for the pair would be a steal, a holding midfield player and an answer to our right-sided problems. Valbuena is quality too and for £4M he would be a genuine steal, but then again, it all depends on money, doesn't it?

I’d love Moyes to have £20M and go and fork out £10M on Cana and Valbuena and then splash £8M on the two Kyle’s, Walker and Naughton. I’d be more than happy with those four, and maybe if we had enough left in the kitty, get one or two in on loan as squad players?! Well, I suppose we can all dream, can't we? COYB, IMWT!!!!.

Only speculating, but I imagine Marseille want rid because he kicks anything that moves, not only the ball.

The clip that Steven refers us to, aside from being arse numbingly boring, reveals about 173 two-footed tackles. He wouldn’t last the month and Fellaini’s early yellow card spree would be a distant memory compared to this guy.

I’m sure he’s not without his virtues, but not for us I suggest. Moyes likes teams with discipline.

I have never really watched him so cannot say anything but going on the YouTube video he would spend more time banned than not. I can do two-footed lunges as well but don’t think it would look as good on YouTube.

Is there a poster who has actually watched him regularly and is able to confirm if he is good or not?

I’ve seen him play on TV fairly often. In France they call him Le Destructeur. He’s a hard man, but he’s professional about it -- picks up a yellow card about every three games, but never sees red. In fact, I think his only sending-off last year was in a World Cup qualifier for Albania, when Mike Riley got him. He’s a ferocious man-marker, but I’ve never seen him get forward or come close to scoring. Strictly a defensive player.

Didn’t he score the opener in Marseilles last home CL group game against the RS? I seem to recall him breaking clean through and twating one down Reina’s throat.

If Mark Reily already has his card marked then he should fit right in at Everton.

I think the YouTube footage of the lad is unfair and shows way too much of the twin-footed stuff. He is a great player, could well be our "Roy Keane" and last season a collection of 7 yellows and 1 red given the films... most shown say, yes, he can be reckless but not to spend the whole season out suspended.

Fellaini last season collected 13 yellows and 0 reds, Pienaar collected 7 yellows and 0 reds, Neville collected 8 yellows and 0 reds and Cahill collected the same 7 yellows and 1 red card. The referees are a different game in the EPL but Fellaini has cleaned his act up.

I’m sure, having seen Cana in some games for Marseille, he really played his heart out for his team and would be a great asset and power in the middle of the park, putting the fear of Christ up a lot of these Ffancy Dan mercenaries.

Steven, I assume Marseille have a big following and are on TV quite a bit down under? Because otherwise your basing your eulogy on a YouTube clip?

As with M’Bia and Moutinho, people are describing players as the best thing since sliced bread based on internet talk. I've seen him play twice and he looks a tidy footballer. I doubt he will be the next Roy Keane.

Looks like an old school hard-as-nails type. That youtube clip should have been in black and white with George Best riding those hatchet tackles. I half expected Cana to start lobbing grenades about!

Would love to see him against Allardyce’s Rovers next season...wipe that smirk right off his face.

£6 million, and wants to play for us? No brainer.

Why the fuck do people get so excited about silly rumours like this? Has anyone actually seen anything other than a vague tedious link where the supposed interest from Everton was mentioned?

The clip that Steve pasted is like a being zoomed back to the days of Chopper Harris and the like! If and it’s a big if the guy arrived at L4 in the Royal Blue he would be getting so many splinters in his arse because of being sent from the field every other game! Let’s face it the refs in the PL just love a hatchet man don’t they! Look at history and this will back up that fact, Julian Dicks, David Batty, Patrick Viera, Roy Keane etc etc all were refs favourites! Let’s face it Fellaini was clumsy more than anything last season and just look at the example that was made of him by the refs.

I have not seen Cana play and therefore I would reserve judgement that anyone can be made to look good by some clever editing and posting a video on Youtube. If Moyes likes what he sees then he is certainly a better judge than you or I, however as others have stated I think Cana does not look disciplined enough to fit into a Moyes team.

Talking of ’anecdotes’ relating to Cana, I recall reading an interview with a well respected French journalist who told the story of the player’s agent trying to negotiate his departure from PSG some years back. Apparently they were playing hardball so his agent told them that if they didn’t let him go then they’d have to sort things out ’the Albanian way’ while pointing his two fingers at him in the shape of a gun. Could be an interesting one...

The reason why Lorik Cana wants to leave OM is because he wants a new challenge. He has played in France since he was 17 years old. Before joining PSG at 17, he was playing in Switzerland. At that time three teams were interested in him, Real Madrid, Arsenal and PSG. He’s visa was refused from England and Spain, so he was left with Paris as his only option.

After a few seasons with PSG, a new coach came, a Serbian coach (Lorik Cana is from Kosovo), and said that he didn't want Lorik in the team. He was sold to OM for €3M. That same season OM beat PSG in Paris for the first time in 14 years, by a score of 1-0. Guess who scored? Yup, Lorik Cana!

He captained Marseille soon after, through the Champions League and UEFA Cup. He shut down Christiano Ronaldo in both games Portugal played against Albania! Something that EPL defenders were not able to do at all! Last year he got 1 red card, and that wasn’t because of a tackle, but he got into a wrestling match with an opponent, after the opponent tried to take the ball from his hands, during a throw-in.

He is a smart and tough midfielder. He is perfect for the EPL! Lorik can also play as a central defender, as he has done for Albania and OM in many occasions. I have seen him play many times, and he is my favorite player! He’s value is at €10m, so to get him for €6m is an amazing bargain.

I'm surprised Arsenal hasn’t made a move for him yet, since they lost Melo to Juventus, but that was only made official today, so they might still throw in a bid for him. Liverpool was also interested in case they lost Xavi or Mascherano, but it seems like they will retain both. Tottenham, Volsburg, Stuttgart, Sevilla, and a few Italian teams have expressed their interest.

Now you guys tell me, if he was this much of a problem with red cards, would he really gather all this interest? As a fan I would hate to see him play in Germany, cuz... well... really i wouldn't get a chance to see him play ever since the Bundesliga is not at the standard of EPL, La Liga, and Seria A.

If he went to Everton, in two years his value will be at £25M, and the big clubs will come calling. Maybe Perez will come knocking!

Cheers!

I’m with Brendan on one point... YouTube could make Brett Angell look good. No player should be judged on what’s shown on a few minutes of compilations.

If anything, we have to trust Moyes and his scouting network (in other words, his copy of Football Manager), as they’ll know more about him than we do.

Personally, nothing makes me cheer as loud as a hefty, crunching tackle — just look at how Goodison erupted when Phil Neville put "CR7" on his arse — and any man whose nickname sounds like a villain from Superman must be fun to watch at the very least.

If you look at the teams above us, they tend to have at least one player whose sole use is to run around volleying people into the crowd — Mascherano, Essien, Mikel are examples — and the teams without those are seen as having a weak point of their team. Arsenal are said to have a "soft" midfield and United fans blame the lack of Hargreaves or Fletcher for losing against Barca and their struggles against "big" teams.

I think we do need a thug in our team. Neville did a great job last season, but he’s not exactly going to put the fear of God into teams, is he?

Every player we’re linked with suddenly becomes "a quality player, I’ve seen him play a few times, great addition" etc etc. The same cliches get reeled out for every player we’re linked with, who never end up signing anyway.

Truthfully, apart from the play-off game on Sky, how many times has everybody seen the two Kyles play? Defour, Fellaini, Witsel, Dalmat, apart from against us and the shite? Cana and the dodgy YouTube link?

I’m not saying their bad players, but it makes me laugh listening to people trying to convince themselves they’ve heard of these players, let alone seen them play!

Judging by Moyes’s comments, he’s only looking for a maximum of 2 signings to come straight into the side. It’s likely Naughton will be one and the other a midfielder. Any other signings will be Bosmans or loans as he said to bulk the squad up.

And as BK said, it’s up to Moyes who he brings in, thankfully, and In Moyes We Trust.
