Copying David Moyes's homework?

So it seems Tottenham have hijacked Naughton's move from Sheff Utd. Is this the current trend of our pre season now, we express an intrerest in a player and other mangers go "oooh brillian idea"?
We know David Moyes likes to do thorough research on players before he buys so maybe other managers are looking at our targets closely. But it seems yet again we fail to seal deals concisely and quickly letting the cat out of the bag and allowing other teams to out muscle us. Maybe this is the Everton way Bill Kenwright likes to speak about. But Everton's way of handling the transfer system is, to put it bluntly, fucking piss-poor.
Looks like we are looking at another last-minute flight to Belgium on the night of transfer deadline day for Kenwright to pull the rabbit out of the hat... again!

There is something seriously, seriously, SERIOUSLY wrong with the transfer stucture of EFC, when we allow two Coco-Cola players to sign for a 'club' that hasn't seen 5th place or Europe since long before Harry-the-bung was last arrested.
Can I just point out that Spurs have NOT signed Naughton. No one has. The recent reports in today's press have emerged from one initial report from, I believe, the Independant. Somebody on another message board states that the Independant is a London based paper and we all know of their love affair with Spurs! There does seem to be somthing odd about this transfer but it is not by any means a concluded transfer.
Well someone has to take Newcastle's place now they have been relegated (Emre anyone?) — it might as well be Spurs.
Obviously Redknapp can't get video tapes of players anymore and sits there wondering what those shiny silver discs with the hole in the middle are, that keep getting sent to him, so bidding for players we are bidding for saves paying for scouts I suppose...
We should be flattered; forget about the Sky 4 — it is us the other teams now want to emulate. I suppose we should be flattered.
I’m with Nick Marsh on this one, time and again people jump to the conclusion when it goes quiet, and the newshounds say such and such has signed for someone else.
Naughton may yet sign for Spurs, he might not. Looking on Spurs website, it says nothing; on ours it says little more, and the Sheff website states they have agreed a deal, and it's up to the player.
So at this stage, Naughton and Walker have signed for no-one.
Just because the newspapers say something doesn’t mean its true...
Calm down love, it’s not a commercial.... Jesus..!
How do any of you know that Redknapp wasn't already watching Naughton, just like Moyes was? It's a fucking joke the petty hatred for another manager who has a great record with bringing youngsters through, just because he pips Moyes to a signing.
If Moyes is so clued up, why didnt he take a legal document with him, some sort of pre-contract contract when he went to see Sheff Utd about Naughton? You know... one of those exclusivity deals Everton love so much. Then, instead of driving home telling BK it was a done deal and the Kid was in the bag (again) only to get out-smarted once more, the lad might be an Everton player right now...
Why do we have to make it so hard for ourselves every time we try to sign a player? Why doesn't DM ever learn? Nothing is ever done until the back of the Echo has the player in an Everton kit.
Get something down on paper, tie the player up, then get him signed on as quick as possible. Never mind all this "He is coming down in 3 days time for a medical and then he signing" nonesense. FFS why is it Harry Redknapps fault?
In fact, if we are so piss poor..... how come Newcastle didn’t come in with an offer to sign Yakubu, Arteta, Cahill, Neville, Johnson, Howard, Baines, heck even Fellaini...???
I rest my case.
I doubt it's Everton who ’let the cat out of the bag’ with regards to who we are signing. More like the selling club or the player's agent trying to drum up interest and get more money. Also, if Everton's scouts are watching a player for ages, you can bet other clubs are too.
It’s not Harry Redknapp’s fault... but (should he not eventually sign for us) it’s not Everton’s fault either (going by what little we know). The official Sheffield Utd site states that a deal has been agreed but it’s up to the player. The Sheffield Utd manager (was it?) was actually on TV stating that a deal had been agreed which was good for their club etc etc....
Unfortunately, there’s no such thing as a legally binding pre-contract contract, and things can go wrong! All Everton can do is to make the offer, have it accpeted and then do the deal... did Sheffield go back on their word? Did Spurs gazump us? It’s all gone very quiet and there’s no way of telling just yet....
The Redknapp jibes are childish, if Everton want to get the players we are after then we have got to go about it in a much speedier way. If another club comes into the equation, well, that's called COMPETITION and even means to me that the player is actually useful and has something about him as other clubs are interested!!!! Who knew!!!
You have to give other clubs some credit for knowing about possible signings, but it does seem that for about five years now the usual suspects have become much more interested when Moyes has entered the field.
My memory isn’t so good, but didn’t Sourness pay over the odds to get Scott Parker - who quickly realised what a disaster that was and moved back south asap?
Moyes now has a big reputation for bringing players on. Part of this is talent spotting — which is why the likes of O’Neill and 'Arry are watching — but also what happens to them after they’ve joined us. Have any of our "misses" over the last few years gone on to be as successful as The Jag or Tiger Tim?
While EFC could probably do things better, my vote goes to agents (for the player or the selling club) as the villains here. The higher the fee/wages the more they make.
Just to clarify, the Sheff Utd website STILL only says one bid has been accepted — ours. Once again, too many people believing the papers.
Ro Clive — I think it might have something to do with the fact that we are piss poor and Spurs are naive and rich.
I love that our fans can lament our club's transfer policy when we have brought in world class players for peanuts.
Reading the local rag here this evening and seems the two Kyles have gone to Spurs, even though they really have no need of them. Bummer for Everton :(
Just a minor note to Tony Marsh. Harry Redknapp bringing through young players? Who for instance? His only obvious attributes apart from 1 FA Cup win is leaving former clubs Bournemouth, West Ham, Southampton (twice) and Portsmouth on the verge of or in bankruptcy.
It is quite plain Tony that the only thing that you seem to get any pleasure out of posting on this board is slagging off Moyes when everybody, and I mean everybody, I talk to around the UK thinks he is far and away the best young manager in the Premier League.
Look!!! If Spurs had actually completed the signatures already would they not be in some paper, either online or otherwise, holding up a white shirt with a cock on it.... and a cock standing beside them, come to think of it?
Good point and post Brian... well, up until the second use of the word 'cock' that is!
Sorry..........I meant cockney! I was distracted and pressed enter before I finished *LOL*
@Gary Green
Joe Cole and Frank Lampard spring immediately to mind...
If Naughton goes to Spurs the only person to blame is Naughton as he will have chosen Spurs over us. Our actions are never the best as we take ages over almost every signing but at the end of the day it's the player that decides.
My concern is why we can only ever conduct one deal at a time when we need a few players brought in. And the club said they wanted players in early. As ever we’ve been suckered into it and bought our season tickets early and the club will just be laughing at us.
So John, were you not going to renew your season ticket then? Were you waiting to see who we bought before buying it? Quite strange seeing how we had our best year for over a decade last season.
In regards to transfers, can someone explain what else Everton could have done with this deal? Offer accepted and we were to talk to Naughton when he came back from Malta but old twitchy got involved and Sheff United started acting like a spurned ex, not even taking calls from us.
What could we have done differently?
Just seen a thread on a SUFC fan site that’s saying they expect both players to be having a medical at Spurs tonight with Danny Rose going on loan to SUFC. This of course is just another fans opinion... no different from the fan of Everton who told us that Naughton was deffo signing!
"But it seems yet again we fail to seal deals concisely and quickly letting the cat out of the bag and allowing other teams to out muscle us. Maybe this is the Everton way Bill Kenwright likes to speak about. But Everton’s way of handling the transfer system is, to put it bluntly, fucking piss-poor."
Everton did not let the cat out of the bag. A deal was agreed for Naughton and publicly announced by his club. Everton played it by the book.
It matters not a bit that Redknapp may or may not have been on Naughton’s case. A deal was agreed subject only to player’s terms. Sheff Utd announced this (thanks Stewart Littler) and then tried to gazump Everton out of greed.
Anybody who confuses the flawed ethics of one club for the failed professionalism of another, has lost the plot and is presumably in secure accommodation.
Gary Green, off the top off my head on who Redknapp brought through:
Paul Ince, Jamie Redknapp, Joe cole, Rio Ferdinand, Frank Lampard, Anton Ferdinand, Michael Carrick, Jermain Defoe — that's nearly an England team right there... and there are many more.
How's that? — all through the youth system he set up as well.
Tony Marsh is an absolute JOKE. Do you really think Moyes went to do the deal with Sheffield United???? That’s not his fucking job, you cretin, that's the job of of CEO or Chairman. You have a go at people displaying hatred for Redknapp but you seem quite content doing that with Moyes. Go back under your stone, the one you do when we win several games on the trot.
Tony — you can have Ferdinand, Lampard, Carrick & Cole but as for Ince he was playing for Utd before Redknapp joined West Ham and Defoe was bought from Charlton and Anton Ferdinand was only 16 when Redknapp left so he didn’t do much with him.
Tony, that’s bollocks.
Crediting Redknapp for the likes of Ferdinand and Lampard is like crediting Moyes for Rooney. These players were always going to break through to the first team at some point.
Redknapp has made a career out of buying well-known under-achievers and helping them reach their potential, but when has he ever previously signed young British talent from the lower divisions?
I do agree with you on one point though, if we lose out on Naughton, it smacks of another transfer cock-up by Everton. Why make a bid for a player when he’s not around to discuss terms and take a medical???
Ryan you must be about 12 years old lad. Are you telling me that one way or another Moyes had no contact with Naughton? Do you really think a manager in the Premier League doesn't oversee dealings that could cost him his job if they went wrong?
I am not arsed who met the player or who shook the lads hand — all that matters is the deal fucked up and the player slipped away. It happens too often for my liking but if you think it's ok to work in this manner then you haven't got a clue about football.
Yeah Tony, he "brought them through" at West Ham and still left them broke.
And its RedKnapp!!!
Admit it, your problem is personal for whatever reason with Moyes.
I think we’ll get Naughton. I mean, it’s just common sense on all sides. Spurs already have 4 right backs, meaning Naughton’s not going to get a game. Plus, Everton are the better team, and he actually has an opportunity to get into the first XI here. If he really does have aspirations of representing England next summer, then he has to come to us.
Oh, and fuck Sheff United, fuck his agents, and fuck Redknapp, cunt. How does a moron like that get in charge of a rich club like Spurs?
Tony, I’m 28. You can’t always blame Moyes for everything when it has been proved Everton agreed a deal with Sheffield United. The player was with his club on their pre-season and was speaking to Everton when he came back. They have then backtracked on the deal after Spurs came in. A deal is never done until the player signs that dotted line.
I’m as pissed off as you when I see so many deals not taking place. But this is really not David Moyes’s fault I’m sorry to say. Just a team having more money than us. And we all know who’s fault that is.
I’m with you, Ryan. Tony blaming Moyes for not taking a legal document with him and then tarnishing the exclusivity deal on him, which I’m sure would have had nothing to do with him, is just downright laughable.. How can I continue to take his opinion seriously going forward?
Are you all really that arsed? A 20-year-old right back who’s played 43 times at Championship level. How many would have gone out and got Naughton on the back of your shirt if he’d have signed? He’s hardly the magical signing we require.
I hope Moyes directs his attention now towards buying a right midfielder to replace Osman. Then he can play Arteta, Cahill, Fellaini and Pienaar plus the new signing in midfield and move Neville back to right back. I do get the feeling that Moyes is only really comfortable when he’s trying to sign defenders.
Mr Attwood, score all the Brownie points you want off me mate I don't give a shit, but the fact is another player has been promised to the fans and has gone elsewhere. How many is that now over the past few years?
I am not directly blaming Moyes, I think it's a combination of many dfferent factors, Moyes just being apart of a set-up that can't get things done properly most of the time.
It gives me no pleasure to see our club lagging behind others when it comes to the transfer market but I can't sit back and pretend Bill Kenwright, Moyes, Wyness and Elstone will put things right.
Every season, this very t same hing happens and WE all end up shredding the nerve ends on 31 August, waiting for players to come in but they never do...
If things in your mind are all hunky dory regarding these matters then you haven't got a clue... WHEN was the last time we signed a player who was first on our list?? I can't remember but that's all right because you don't take me seriously
Yeah, yeah, lots of arguing and stuff, you can’t argue that Harry ain’t left them broke though, deffo right about that, suspect ENIC know what they’re doing so shouldn’t let that happen. My gripe is that I hate Tottenham, I’ve lived in shared houses all over London & the South and always seem to end up with deluded twat of a Spurs supporter who, between May & August, always seem to find enough hope to think they’re going to win the league. That’s my Problem.
If we get this Cana bloke from under the noses of Hamburg & Kyle whoever signs for those muppets then it’ll be 1 lost, 1 gained... now let's get the season under way.
Moyes and the crew should come up with some decoys, say that we were impressed by Titus Bramble & Clint Dempsey last year and they’re both a good age for defenders, then see if anyone jumps in to gazump the deals while sorting a few youngster deals out on the sly.
Has anyone mentioned the Sports Interactive (did I get that right) deal this summer? Does Moyes do his ’hard work’ by looking at the numbers from the ’army’ of scouts they have out there?
Who cares, Tottenham will wreck these defenders like they have every other feckin' defender since Campbell.
Sometimes Tony it works in our favour. Thank God we didn’t sign Alan Smith, Scott Parker and Criag Bellamy. It’s just the way the transfer market works. Even Man City, for all their money, can’t get their first choice signings in.
Has anyone been listening to talksport? I’ve been told that his agent was on there saying he would not be surprised if Naughton ended up at Everton. Can anyone confirm this for me?
It wasn’t Everton that let the cat out of the bag. It was Sheff Utd’s manager after their first pre-season game, going on TV saying it was Naughton’s last game for the club as Everton had had a bid accepted.
Re Tony Williams, I was always going to renew my season ticket. My point is we are being asked for cash earlier and earlier to secure our seats. At the same time, we are told we will be signing players early to get them in for pre-season training. Invariably we don't... but lots of fans renew early for lots of reasons — one of them being the blind hope that we are helping to fund the club transfers.
As for what we could have done, well, perhaps as soon as a fee was agreed, we should have insisted on him not playing a friendly game and risking injury. Maybe flew him over that night for talks and a medical instead of giving other clubs two whole days to get involved.
Nick, it's probably stemmed from this on the Daily Mail's website
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1200471/Everton-poised-land-Blades-defender-Naughton-despite-Spurs-talks.html?ITO=1490
Hi Steve. The Daily Mail’s website report is from about 9pm the Talksport interview was at about 7pm from what I can gather. Also (I don't have Sky), I heard that Harry Redknapp was on Sky and did not mention any possible signings... something strange is going on for sure...
Sorry Nick, I saw that article after I read your post.
There’s also this one...
http://followeverton.com/2009/07/17/kyle-naughton-to-sign-for-everton/
Settle down, Tony. You are carrying on that the deal has DEFINITELY fallen through. When will you learn to ignore the gossip, both good and bad? The deal may well fall over but if it hasn’t, all your huffing and puffing has been for nothing.
This story is an odd one given the events of the week too.
http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11095_5438841,00.html
It basically says that Harry Redknapp has no deals in the pipeline and would be comfortable with not signing anyone.
Tony Marsh... Lets have it straight, Harry Redknapp is the most corrupt man in football, PERIOD. He must have known that Sheff Utd had agreed terms with us, and consequently should have left it alone.
He makes me sick, talking about other teams’ players like they’re his own. He couldn’t lace Moyes’s sporran!
Tony Marsh now has taken on the role as legal executive, you know, the guy that has all the ’inside information’ on ALL the transfer deals that are happening concerning our club.
Just like the bloke at the end of the bar in your local, I heard it from a very good source, "my auntie's cat in fact..."
Sat 18th 10:28am. As far as I can see, no-one has signed. As to who the lad will choose, anyone with half a brain will look at Hutton, Gunter & Bale (sounds like a law firm) and Jags, Joey & Baines and go with the team more likely to get them in the England squad. If they didn’t, frankly we wouldn’t want them.
As to our way of dealing in the transfer market, Moyes / Kenwright haven’t done badly with our buys so far (Krøldrup excepted).
I don’t know why people are running Redknapp down, I remember Harry Catterick doing it to Spurs over Alex Scott for goodness sake. These people are employed to do their very best for the club that employs them — if they don’t, they are out on their arses! I think Moyes could have learned a few tricks off Catterick; sadly, he’s not around.
Imagine how well recieved Naughton will be by the fans if he signs for us after the southern geordies poked their nose in?
