Dear Bill...

Dear Bill,

Why is every summer the same at Everton FC? All the hope and expectation engendered by the manager, coaching staff and players during the season, somehow haemorrhages out of the club as yet another barren transfer window unfolds.

Why is it that whenever David Moyes and his band of brothers – to borrow from the Liverpool Echo's Dominic King – build us up with their on-field exploits, the Board of Directors, almost without fail, let us down?

Under the Moyes regime, Everton act like a big club on the pitch; they fill us with pride. Yet whenever the time comes for the Board to do their bit, to make a positive contribution, the result tends to be a no-show.

The possibility exists that you, as Chairman, and your fellow directors, will be overseeing yet another purgatory of a close season, in which, in effect, you offer no support to David Moyes. Support means a transfer budget and ambition. Essentially this represents a dereliction of duty, even before one considers questions such as why all this new money in football perpetually eludes Everton (but not Manchester City x2, Notts County, Portsmouth, Sunderland x2, Aston Villa, Southampton et al).

David Moyes can manage the football season perfectly well. Why can't those responsible behind the scenes at Everton manage the transfer window with similar efficiency, or even just a smidgen of it?

Sincerely...
Lawrence Patrick, Liverpool, England     Posted 22/07/2009 at 14:06:56

Wow, Lawrence, get ready to put on the tin hat. Don’t you know we have some touchy fans on here, especially when something is said against the luvvy...

2008 Fellaini £15Mil
2007 Yakubu £11Mil
2006 Johnson £8Mil
2005 Beattie £6mil

Four consecutive seasons. Four club record breaking transfers.

Whilst successfully managing the inevitable task, the clubs finances, and maintaining them at a ’managable’ level.

Now, what exactly would Bill Kenwright have to have done in the last 4 years to not recieve criticism — break the club record by more perhaps?!

"Manchester City x2, Notts County, Portsmouth, Sunderland x2, Aston Villa, Southampton et al)."

Would you seriously trade places with any of those clubs? We are established as a top 5 club. I accept it’s frustrating that the signings have not arrived yet but, year on year, the squad is improving. Patience is the key. When the arse falls out of football (and it will do eventually) do you think any of these foreign owners will stay around?

I'd be just happy if they turned round and were honest and said that there was no money for transfers this summer so don’t expect too much. At least then, if nothing was done over the transfer window, they could say, "Well we did tell you..."

If by chance we did buy some players, it would be a pleasant surprise. Like Lawrence said, it is a royal pain in the ass having our hopes built up of getting one or two good signings in, only for everything to be left to the last minute so it looks like we are panic buying.

I’m not saying I am not pleased that we have broken our transfer record for consecutive seasons; I am, however, cheesed by the BS we are pretty much forced to listen to at the start of every summer period and I really don’t get the point of why they even need to do it in the first place. It would just be better if they said nothing at all.

The fact that the Board do this every season doesn’t help their credibility (what little they have) and supporters just start thinking the worst straight from the word go. Those that do believe the hype start to stress through our lack of activity in the market and that just leads to more venom being injected at BK, Moyes and the Board.

So if any members of the Board happen to be reading these comments (and I very much doubt it), do us a favor in the summer months and just say sod all or be honest in what realistically we can be hoping for.

Everyone is kicking up a stink about a lack of transfer activity and I quote, "I'd be just happy if they turned round and were honest and said that there was no money for transfers this summer so don’t expect too much."

Isn’t this almost word for word what Moyes said last week? I believe he said it will probably be players on loan as money is tight.

Mick Pedley I understand that is what Moyes stated last week. But weeks before that wasn’t the line from Elstone that we would bolster the squad and were pushing to get players in for the start of pre season training as that is what we had failed to do last season and have really failed to do again this season?

My thoughts exactly Mike, we knew what this close season would be like. No signing will come until we get the Sky money, even though I don’t know why we can’t buy on the strength of it, as it’s not like they won’t pay.

Christopher, we have tried to bolster the squad early, the Naughton fiasco started as soon as th ewindow opened and we have brought in two youngster.

Nothing exciting I grant you but I am waiting for August before we get the SKy money before seeing genuine bids, unless Lescott goes earlier than that.

Under Bill Kenwright’s reign;

Total transfer fee’s paid - £124.32m

Total transfer fee’s received – £116.60m

Net spend - £7.72m

Which makes an average spend of £772k a season.

(and if Lescott goes for the reported £20m – that will make a net received of £12.28m!!)

So, Graeme Hodgkinson, do you see why a lot of Evertonians are sick to the back teeth of hearing ‘’he’s broke the transfer record upteen times’’??

Good points, Adam. Things is, Bill will not go of his own accord, even though publically he is stating that he is looking for investment 24 /7. If we do want rid then we the fans need to be more vocal and make our displeasure known. Only that way will he get the message and potential bidders will come forward due to the media coverage. Thing is, though, I’m not sure all fans do want rid and until the position changes we’ll remain in this state of malaise.

So Bill reckons there's no one interested in buying our club and backing the best young manager in Europe? The recent takeover of Notts County — I'll just repeat that — Notts County(!!!) surely tells us that our Bill isn't exactly telling us the whole story.

Here we have one of the greatest clubs in English football, a mere place away from a Champions League place, and he turns around to us and tells us that no-one wants to take over from the joke that is the board and invest in the club. Meanwhile over at Notts (who?).... do I have to say more? He really must think we are stupid.

The Board are a disgrace... Kenwright Out!!

Your naive to think that potential billionaire investors are wondering around in there own doo-lally world waiting for a football clubs to come and bite them on the backside with a a viable investment proposal!

Infact they spend time and money, and common sense weighing up potential investments.

As for Notts County, the owners will have to spend considerably less in League two, to get them to the Premier League, than the city owners will have to spend to get them to the champions league over the same period of time!

Notts County investment is a simple, money versus end product equation.
City to the Champions League over the next 5years will perhaps double the value of the club. Notts County to premiership will increase the value by over a thousand percent. And further still it will cost them far less to do it!

Notts County also have the tag line of oldest football league club — very appealing to investors, I'm sure.
