Edmonton Cup

Comments (122)

Everton and River Plate (Argentina) are set to battle for the Edmonton Cup in a friendly pre-season fixture set in the Commonwealth Stadium, Edmonton, Alberta... kind of the Canadian mid-west.

Kick-off is at 7:30pm on Saturday night local time (that's Mountain Daylight Time... some 7 hours behind British Summer Time). So add 7 hours on and you get 02:30am in the wee small hours of Sunday Morning as the kick-off time for ardent night-owl Evertonians in the UK and Ireland. For the rest of the World... well, you're on your own: do the maths, as they say!

And coverage is provided *live* on EvertonTV... but there's a catch if you are outside the UK & Ireland; seems Everton's broadcast rights to their own games on their own TV channel don't extend beyond the coastline of the British Isles. Hardly "user friendly" in this modern day and age of global internet access...

For those who can't get the visuals, there is no sound either, but Nick Marsh has volunteered to provide match updates via this mailbag thread.

David Moyes has pretty much his strongest squad, other than the chronically injured players on the long path to recovery (Yakubu, Arteta, Jagielka, Anichebe), while Dan Gosling is with the England Under-19 side.

Just an update on the game availability: this is the email i sent to the club earlier today:
HI,I had hoped to watch the pre-season friendlies here in the USA onEverton TV...I was told when I logged in during the Rochdale game thatit was unavailable in my area. i noticed that the River Plate game is being advertised ’wherever youare in the world’. Can you confirm that i will be able to watch the gamein my current location? (Philadelphia, USA) Thanks

and here is the reply i got:

Dear Nigel, Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to read that you were unable to access the previous livevideo coverage. We have updated our systems so you should encounter no problem to watchthe match laster today. Kind regards, Everton TV Customer Service

So hopefully we will be able to see it tonight.

I’ve just got in from a mint family bbq, wife’s on an early so had to come away, am well oiled and determined to stay up and watch the game. I’ll add my opinion to proceedings. Looking forward to watching us against classic south american opposition. On an a drunken waffle now but on works do last night and all the talk was of an ex pupil Zac Thompson - a young lad who i taught - making his first couple of appearances for our reserves. Absolutely top lad, on our books from an early age but an avid red. Used to take him to Kirkby for tournaments at liverpools academy there. His dad always swore he would go to liverpool when he turned 16 but when the time came he couldnt fault how we’d treated him and wanted to stay. Best of luck to him. Played against the teachers when he left at year 6 (we won), came back next year and gave us the run around! Anyway, i’ll be supporting him and us at the Halton stadium next season. COYB!

This is why I can’t understand the negative feelings about Jo. The guy has so much quality on the ball, he’s going to be very valuable for us. I know we need help in our midfield still, but I’m thrilled about our strikers. Yakubu, Jo, Saha, and then Vaughan off the bench for energy sounds very good to me.

A big test for Rodwell to control the middle against a quality side like River Plate. So far not looking great. Good experience though. In my opinion it just shows how a player of limited skill like Neville can use his experience and judgement to command the middle so well.

Hard tackle LB (Baines) and RP player goes into Hollywood mode. Cue physio and clock runs down. Better second half from Everton, not great but better than a tepid and disinterested first half. At least we took the game into RP’s half with some intent. Clearly to compete with the likes of RP we need some more players who can hold the ball and take a player on with confidence.

Contrary to Julian’s post, River are a strong team who simply experienced a "blip" in last season’s Apertura when they finished 20th from 20th teams.

Their recent record is as follows:

Clausura 2008 - Champions
Apertura 2009 - Last Place
Clausura - 8th Place

They recently lost their main striker "Radamel Falcao" to Porto and so big things are expected from Diego Buonanotte and the returning Ariel Ortega in the twilight of his career.

It may hurt to see this again but this is the link to Ortega’s extremely-well executed chip:

I don’t think we should take too much away from this friendly. Ortega ran past Rodwell and Lescott like they weren’t there but the Argentina season has only just finished and their players will have been stronger and fitter than our rested stars. Roll on the MLS game.

Everton are getting slated by the papers over here... Apparently we "didn’t turn up" and left our two "best and best known" players on the bench in Phil Neville and Tim Howard. They said that Everton could have at least given the fans what they wanted in bringing these two on. Canadians - bless them! They really haven’t a clue about "soccer".

Poor game overall though, however i thought (and i couldn’t be sure it was him due to the poor picture) Wallace played quite well when he came on. Baines was poor and overall the touch was missing from most of the players.

Certainly nothing new seen or found apart from perhaps Wallace.

Off the subject, but talksport have just reported Everton have agreed a £7M deal with Spurs for Alan Hutton.

I am a Canadian Toffee fan who has been to Liverpool and Goodison Park and I am here to tell you about the friendly last night in Edmonton.

First of all, I must tell you the crowd was pro-Everton, with lots of blue jerseys being worn. The crowd was very small for a soccer game of this caliber (10,800) in Edmonton... 37,000 came to see David Beckham and a third rate soccer game last year and we have had crowds as high as 50,000 for Canada vs Brazil. But keep in mind, in Canada, soccer is a fringe sport except for ’the soccer people’ like me.

Anyway, I paid $400 bucks to take my family of four to the game and I expected to see Everton play their best... as was indicated in the newspapers. What actually happened was that River Plate played their top line-up and Everton did not... until too late in the game. We wanted to see Phil Neville and Saha give it their all and win the game... but instead we watched Jo, walking about with that Big Hair. I met up with some people I know from Liverpool who now live in Canada and they were distressed about how the Toffees were performing.

As far as the result went,  Everton should have had a penalty kick late in the game but, for 92 minutes, River Plate were first to the ball and that is of course what decided the game... I see Tim Cahill has said that the pitch was bad; well I am sure that it is not like the pitch at Goodison Park but Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton is simply the best natural grass field in Canada — bar none... and the officials erase all the markings for the ’other football’. I have never heard anything but praise for the field from international guests so I think the Aussie is full of you know what...

Have a great day Liverpool... you have a wonderfull city!

Blake... While I appreciate it was not our absolute strongest line up it was certainly a good enough line up, as for wanting Saha ahead of Jo, whom had a very good game, well perhaps if the pitch was of better standard then Saha would of started but to play an injury prone player on that pitch would be a risk.... we have natrual grass where I live, don't mean I call it a pitch! Was pleased to see the lines were removed though.

River Plate were not first to the ball for the whole game. They were the better team but not by that much. Can understand the dissapointment with Howard and the popular Neville not playing but I have no doubt that they both will play against the MLS all stars, arguably a bigger match carrying a bigger attendance and hopefully a better pitch!

I know what you're saying Blake, that's lots of money to have to find for a pre-season friendly. I no longer go to these games, not even at GP, because even though I understand they are merely preparation, I can't help feeling kinda ripped off if my particular favourites are not playing. It sort of brings home how lucky we are to be on the doorstep.

Hope next time we are in your neck of the woods you and your family get better VFM.

Blake, I expected nothing less from this game. It is a pre-season friendly with most of the players only up to about 60% fitness. The pitch was not the greatest and I would expect that River Plate would be first to the ball, as they have only recently finished their season.

It’s no consolation to you with your expenses but you shouldn’t expect too much with pre-season friendlies, the same way I am not expecting much from the Malaga game.
