The Mail Bag

Team vs BATE

Comments (305)

SkySports Live Score Centre are reporting the line up as:

Howard, Gosling, Hibbert, Distin, Baines, Osman, Cahill, Fellaini, Bilyaletdinov, Jo, Yakubu.

Subs: Nash, Duffy, Agard, Baxter, Wallace, Mustafi, Akpan.

Presumably this means Hibbert as a centre back. Will he also take the arm band? Will Tony Marsh make it through the night?

Is it just me that was expecting Yobo to play — what's wrong with him?

Official site has team on it. Yak and Jo starting. Gosling playing centre-half with Distan by look of team sheet... (Duffy and Mustafi both on bench along with all the other kids and Carlo).

In for a tough test tonight, COYB!

Looking at that team, and what remains on the bench, I’d be happy for any kind of draw - not even worried if we play shite. The only positive I feel is that we seem to have a habit of coming out on top when our backs are against the wall.

And why is this game not interesting? We have Hibbert at CB, Yakubu partnering Jo, and no experience on the bench. So, if any player picks up a strain, which with the way our season is going will probably happen, some young kid is going to get thrown into the action. That’s interesting to me.

To all those saying how terrible Jo is. How many opportunities has he had to get the ball and play it to someone, or dare to have a shot at goal? What the hell would any player do with the service he has had. Fucking Ronaldo would look useless after that first half. You want to have a go at someone then look at Dinyar and his terrible set pieces, Cahill with an open look at goal and missing the target, and Baines hoofing the ball forward or losing his footing and the ball.

Hibbert is a very good defender and always has been. Where he comes up short is his distrbution and crossing which unfortunately for him is a part and parcel of the full backs game these days. Glenn Johnson is good in attack but lacks it defensively. I know which one Id prefer. Hibbo everytime!! And Sharpie just gave him MOM on Radio City. Well Done Hibbo.

Great result in a tough game. Considering we had a whole side out, and that they’re not a bad side from their Euro results last season.

Great to see Hibbo stepping up

Spot on Steve. Hibbert might not be great going forward, but his defending is excellent. He was asked to play where he has never played before, up against a team with pace, and the lad has been rock solid.

That was a very very ugly win.

But for those who hate Moyes’ style....I would be searching for a while to find a manager with so many players out or out of position that could have pulled that out of the bag.

Sometimes credit where it is due.

I’m the first to criticise him but tonight Hibbert was outstanding, credit to the lad for playing out of position and doing so well. Without that wonder strike, Howard didn’t have a save to make and that is all credit to the defence.

I get nervous watching the blues but I dont let it manifest as moaning. Some people are the pits on here. That was a real, gutsy, backs-to-the-wall performance and a brilliant result, the players and coaching staff dont deserve shit for tonight. Im proud of that team. Were far from perfect and its often not pretty but we really dug in tonight. Im not settling for anything mediocre as the naysayers may say, Im just supporting my team right now and hoping for improvements to come.

Andy Codling;

With that pitch and that team, that was a cracking performance. And I was the guy slating Everton the most for their performance against Portsmouth.

That’s our best performance of the season. If you go away for an hour and think about it, you’ll understand why.

It was a funny game.

First half we had 6 shots on goal, they had just one. Second half we looked like a side trying to hang on to a undeserved one goal lead. We just couldn’t get hold of the ball.

Then, when I lost pictures on my PC and had to rely on the BBC’s text highlights, we go and score two. I don’t know how it happened but am delighted for the lads we did.

A real makeshift side and a difficult match. The icing on the cake is an AEK side we made to look awful go and beat the ’giants’ that are Benfica.

COYBB!

Well said Ste Lewis, depressing isn’t it. And well done all those people that have the balls to come on and give due credit and stop the endless unjustified slagging. Sadly not everyone has those balls though.

Great 3-points against a good team, dug-in, rode their luck a little, but as with Sunday the sign of a good team is to scramble victories from poor performances.

I’m not an admirer of Hibbert as a player (as a Blue, yes) but I have to say that, well though he played tonight at CB, there has been just as much positive knee jerk reaction as there ususally is negative. Hibbo would get crucified at CB in the Premier League for all the same reasons as he struggles at RB. However, tonight with our backs to the wall - which is the lad’s type of game - I’d prefer to put realism to one side and, without getting carried away, congratulate him for a great perfomance.

Was actually watching the game, but as usual the ’as it happens’ comments on here are hilarious.

Brian Waring - I’m still scratching my head as to why we paid all that money for Fellaini.

Scores goal, then great tackle, makes another.

Andy Codling - Utter crap, fuck off Moyes with your 7o grand a week hoofball crap

Win away with scratch team and terrible pitch. Top of group.

John Martin - We will just sit back now

We score.

Ajay Timothy - not sure what most of you are thinking when you start lambasting the players.

This is not ’thinking’, but a knee-jerk parade of prejudices.

Keep the wins and the comedy coming.

Chris Leyland..... great battling performance by the lads tonight, but the Kirkby tescodrome is still bollox.

It has nothing to do with Moyes or the players and never has. Winning in Europe or losing in Europe makes no differerence... it’s still a pile of steaming poo.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking the people against Kirkby are the same as the moronic ’ Hibbert and Osman Fan Club’

Calm down clam down!!! Toffeeweb is getting a bit of a pasting for the negativity lately. I myself have had a few moans(mainly Kenwright related), but consider myself a positive pro-Moyes blue. I don’t begrudge the ’end of the world’ when we are losing attitude though - that is what footie is all about...living and dying with every game, caring far too much, making snap judgements lacking balance or consideration!!

Great result - a team worth of players missing, gritty fightback. I just wonder whether the Europa League will be the making of our season. I am even wondering how well we would do with a full squad to pick from later in the season!

Great result and a good performance everything considered.

We had a full outfield team injured or unavailable, yet still managed to travel 1200 miles, to russia, and beat a good team on their own patch in crappy conditions, having gone behind to a goal that any team would have conceeded.

Even some of the players who were playing were not fit(yak, & cahill 2nd half) or playing out of position(hibbert, gosling).

I thought hibbert was excellent and despite all the comments on here I thought fellaini had a good game. He worked hard, made his presence felt all over the pitch winning possession for us, chasing back and the goal was nice too.

What we lacked were enough players to make themselves available for a pass and also be able to go past players. Any team would miss Pienaar and Arteta.

I thought osman and both our strikers were invisible for the entire match. Cahill in the first half didn’t play well either. 2nd half apparently he had a knock, but all credit to him for the instinct, bravery and excellent finishing he showed for his goal.

I thought bily did very well too, but like fellaini I just think the weather combined with the lack of quality in the ranks ultimately made our football turn very scrappy and direct.
