The Big Fella...

Comments (11)

It would appear that Fifa have done the right thing and cleared Fellaini for the Wolves game. Good news!

Is it seen as good news by all Evertonians though? I have been on my world travels this year and have failed to see as much game coverage as I would like. From everything I have read though, there seems to be an incredible difference of opinion on this player.

Match reports this year have had some fans giving him Man of the Match, describing him as "immense" whilst in the very same game, others describe him as a waste of space / money. Which is it folks? Flop or future great?

Is he showing signs of improvement many promised having had a full pre-season and time to learn a bit more English? Is he a vital cog in the Everton wheel or just a big cart-horse?

Don’t think anything new will come up in this thread that hasn’t been said before Jamie, but IMHO I think he’s doing alright, his pricetag weighs heavy, his stature makes his every move or lack of stand out on the pitch, but all in all. He’s been a 6/10 player so far this season I’d say, with signs that he’s getting better.

He’s not hit the EPL running like Arshavin, but I’d rather have him in the team than not. Wipe away the price tag and say he was born in Birkenhead and he’d be a hero already. Steadily improving I’d say.

Andy I agree with some of your words and although I would love Arshavin ahead of the big fella at this present moment. I would certainly say Fellaini had far more of an impact for his club last season than Arshavin.

Leading goalscorer and played a big part in getting us to Wembley and he also had the burden of refs targeting him mostly because of his daft stick out appearance.

He is annoying with his work rate but some of his close control and passing can be top draw and I am in the boat that says he will be a major player for us in time.

The problem that Fellaini is always going to have is that his game isn’t the stand out, not a fantastic sort that makes you go ’Wow’. He is a very good player at holding the ball, passing it about and doing the simple things very well.

Recently, he has been playing slightly deeper so not been as much of a goal threat, but he is excellent at linking up play and picking the right pass.

To some watchers, this means he’s not doing anything and a waste of money, but he is probably the sort that you would notice more if he was missing. If he had a midfield of Billy, Pienaar and Arteta to link up with, he would make a big difference.

As for the price tag, well, I have mentioned this before, but look at Michael Carrick — cost a similar amount (a few years earlier as well), and does a similar job. Comparing to Arshavin is a bit harsh because they are completely different players in completely different roles.

I think he is becoming a key player for us and, given his age, will only get better...

He is frustrating, but so is Pienaar at times. I think his work rate is pretty good actually, the games I have seen him in thus far this season he chases, harries and covers ground.

Having said that, I know one criticism of him that is often cited revolves around him not closing down quickly enough or making a challenge. I can see that — on one hand, he covers ground but perhaps doesn’t put the challenge in or get close enough to his man. I do have to wonder how much of this is because of the cards he gathered last season.

It is is notable that he has not picked as many up and by his own admission has learned not to put himself into situations where he will get carded. I’d suggest his reticence at times comes from this. Hopefully he’ll learn a happy medium with time. Hopefully...

Some people will never rate him or appreciate his value to the side. You either love him or hate him. If a player isn't quick and scoring 30-yard wonder goals with both feet then they are not footballers in the opinion of some supporters.

It was only the final few seasons when fans started to realise the importance of Carsley. I think Chris is right that we would realise his importance when he is not available.

Playing in his deeper role, I would agree with Andy, he has been a consistent reliable 6/10 player with the added bonus of being involved in the key moments of the game. He is vital from set peices in both boxes and is probably our most effective player.

Jamie, it's all a matter of opinion. I see the big Fella, as a vital cog in Moyes's plans. He has had some poor displays, as all players endure, but he links well in midfield and when he ventures forward, he can cause problems in the opposing penalty area.

He is not being pulled up for stupid fouls, as he was last season, and he very rarely gives the ball away. But as I said at the start, it's down to opinions, and hopefully he will win over the doubters, as many a player has done before him.

I still think he could get double figures this season to help out the recognized scorers and benefit the team in all competitions.

The jury’s still out for me on Fellaini. He’s got huge potential — but for me, it’s only potential and nowhere near finished product.

I would like to see him be a lot more aggressive (despite people’s concerns over cards) and concentrate more — particularly at defending set pieces and when passing as this is too frequently sloppy. I’d like to see him in one position but I'm unsure what his best position is.

The Marmite kid.

Against the Wigans and the Stokes, he's ok. Against the top Prem sides, the game is just too fast for him.

When Felliani play behind the front man, Osman is isolated and gets stick. When Cahill is behind the front man, we see an improved Osman. (This was the main reason we lost the cup final.)

What is the lad's best position?????

I think his best position will be in the middle and not behind the striker. He covers a lot of ground and without crunching tackles his mere presence causes opponents to make mistakes. When in possession he plays it simple and keeps the game moving. Throw in his goals and his overall contribution merits his place in the side. I agree at time’s he’s frustrating but he’s improving and will only get better.

Give him a chance and get behind him.

I look at other teams' forums sometimes after games to try to get a balanced view on things, and one thing that stands out is the praise for Fellaini.

I can't remember the game but I thought Felliani had done well, he’d kept it simple and closed down the options of the opposition rather than the players, Pienaar on the other hand had looked good on the ball but hardly completed a pass, yet on this forum Pienaar was fantastic and Fellaini was a donkey?

He has the potential to be a top draw player. He is very much a diamond in need of polishing. Does some things very very well, simple passing, great in the air, good touch, hold up play. Not blessed with great pace but a long gangly stride makes him faster than he appears. the price tag adds a greater expectation on him.

Lets not forget that while he has had a pre season with us now he had that virus and lost a lot of weight which would set him back and also has had the wisdom tooth problem which believe me, husts like hell.

Get behind him, he is still a young player too!
