Steve Coppell

Steve Coppell... yes, yes, I can hear youse all laughing and sniggering like little school girls — but hear me out on this please.

Firstly, I would like to suggest Steve Coppell to be the next Everton manager and here's why.

Steve took a club like Reading from the brink of the lower leagues to the Premier League on a shoestring budget while playing attacking free-flowing football, scoring a record 104 goals while actually winning something (the Championship).

And before the pro-Moyes brigade start saying "But it's only the Championship", remember Moyes had years to get Preston up and guess what — he didn't!! Not to mention Preston crumbling in the play-offs... "Sound familiar?" — In other words, big games equals big disappointments under Moyes.

Now first season in the Premier League, Reading took the division by storm with their fearless attacking football, taking on anybody and everybody even the big four (something that we have never done and never will do) and ended up 7th in their first season winning plaudits for the style of play.

Second season, the wheels came off. Like most promoted teams they failed to add quality to their squad due to the fact of having no money to spend, so they struggled with second season syndrome and got relegated.

Following year, they sell the best players, struggle in the Championship, Coppell ends up leaving... doesn't sound like great credentials to be the next manager of Everton, does it? ... Or does it?

1. Steve is a winner, he won the league (Moyes has won jack!)

2. Wants to play the game in the right way i.e on the deck!! (Moyes... in your dreams, lad!)

The reason I mention Coppell instead of say a Hiddink or Ranieri is because we could afford Steve, his teams play football the way football should be played, the kind of football that made us love the sport, he sends his teams out to WIN football matches not just to stifle the opponents and hope for 1-0. Performances count for this man, unlike Moyes where results are the be-all!

I'm losing my passion for Everton, last night's performance was pathetic — no heart, no passion... not to mention the total lack of being able to keep the ball, which is the fundamental element in European football.

I believe some of the Everton players have lost faith in Moyes, I believe Moyes has the shackles on and won't let the team express themselves, I believe Steve would take the shackles off and let the players play to their full potential. I for one would love to see what Steve Coppell could do with a squad full of internationals, a team that Steve would have killed for in his Reading days.

My conculsion is that, if we stick by Moyes, we will end up mid-table, maybe top 7 or 8 in years to come, getting the odd good performance and the odd hammering while winning nothing along the way.

Or we could take a gamble on a young hungry manager who likes to play flair football, someone who has actually won somthing, someone who could give us our footballing pride back... School of Science? Yes, please!

I couldn’t agree with you more. I’ve been saying to a lot of my Toffeemates recently that it would be great if we could get Coppell should anything happen to or with Moyes.

I like Steve Coppell, but I don't think it is right to judge a team after a few bad games, I like to judge a manager and a team after a season. The fact is by the end of every season Moyes and the team nearly always turn it around and end up doing better than the season before. I also don't think it is fair to judge the team or the manajor until there is a full squad available or at least a full team.

Who’s that then?

He’s managed one "big" club - Man City - apparently he did a great job for the week or so he could handle it...

I’d always thought that Steve Coppell was known for not being able to take the pressure. Did he not walk out on one or two jobs? I agree that what he acheived with Reading was fantastic but it’s strange that never seems to have been seriously linked with a "bigger" club.

Oh and for what it's worth, the "young, hungry manager" is 54 (8 years older than the current incumbent) and is so hungry that he voluntarily walked away from Reading to take a break from the game as he had gone stale.

Seriously???? With Moyes 1st XI available last night we would not have lost that game. The injuries are not Moyes fault! Have faith and patience we are all frustrated! But come on! Steve Coppell??

I prefer to judge managers at the end of the season, and at the end of recent seasons have we anything to complain about? 5th in the last two seasons a FA Cup Final last season!!!

OK this season hasn’t started very well but I think people really need to get a reality check before calling for DM’s head. I agree at times the football we play is awful to watch but I would rather play crap and finish 5th than play attractive football and end up in the Championship (West Brom!!!).

As for Steve Coppell, yes a good manager. But to replace Moyes with Coppell is a massive step backward. I don’t care that he won the Championship with Reading, ffs who wants to win the Championship anyway? That can not be taken as a guide to the calibre of a Manager. Walter Smith won the Scottish Premier League!! Does anyone want him back?

I hope that everyone gets behind DM and the team, and help us get out of this sticky spell. Because I for one think that getting rid of Moyes would be a massive mistake.

I don´t like jumping on an anti Moyes bandwagon and I´m not one for knee jerk reactions but for the first time I do actually feel quite depressed at the thought of Moyes continuing to be manager. He, like the football is dour and bleak, and its as clear as water that we will never ever win silverware under him. Never. Cue, change is needed

We’re all upset and embarrassed by yesterday’s result.

But let’s try and retain a sense of perspective, with 11 players out through injury or ineligibility.

And Steve Coppell... STEVE COPPELL???

Shome wind up shurley, hic!

Good idea. And maybe he can take us down into the Championship as he did with Reading.

Preston are in a worse state than us though, they "have" to sell at least one star player every two seasons to stay afloat.

Steve Coppell!

What if he doesn’t want the job?

May I suggest Alan Curbishley. Or maybe we could go for Kevin Keegan.

Stupid suggestions I know but hey, you started it Sean!

The funniest thing in all this is that there is a manager out there who against all odds has taken his team into the top 4 on one occasion, into Europe in 3 successive seasons and to an FA Cup Final, all on a shoestring budget.

And yet some of you idiots want to replace with the likes of Steve Coppell.

Get a grip!

Steve Coppell was interviewed years ago and asked if he ever fancied the job and said he could never do it as he is a RS.

People seem to forget that the opposition on Thursday was Benfica, not Brentford.

At least we’re not losing 4 in a row.

It was all going so well, Sean, until you described Coppell as a young, hungry manager playing attacking football.

Two things - Coppell is even older than Moyesey - he’s 53! Hardly a spring chicken. Secondly, the so-called attacking football he displayed in the second season saw his side walloped 6-0 by West Ham and 7-4 by Portsmouth. We might lose by similar scorelines to Arsenal but at least they are a top-class side and not some second-rate sides.

I watched a taped Question of Sport from the other week when they had Owen Coyle and my Dad turned to me and said "I’d have him as Moyesey’s replacement if he went". I agreed with him. Much better than Steve Coppell, who tried once at a big club (City) and walked out after a month because he couldn’t handle the pressure. Why would we want someone like that, someone who’d be under bigger pressure at the School of Science?
