Head injury?

Comments (15)

Forgetting (or trying to) the debacle in Portugal last night, I was intrigued by the comment that Yobo is out due to a head injury.

Now when I thought about this I wondered if they meant his head wasn't right inside... especially after the whoopsee against Wolves... but seriously what sort of "head injury" puts you on the treatment table? As somebody who remembers Dave Hickson getting his head bandaged (they couldn't do stitches on the pitchside then) following a nasty clash of heads and a badly cut wound then coming back onto the pitch and scoring a header, I wonder WHY Yobo can't play.

Now I know there is a ruling on concussion that keeps a player out for a few games but I get the feeling that's not what it is.

Anybody with more knowledge know what Yobo's injury really is?

Jay, I thought with about 20 minutes to go against Wolves that Joey was injured because he seemed to be running funny - like his legs had turned to jelly. Perhaps it’s concussion? These days we’re a bit more health and saftey conscious than in Hickson’s time!

Jay,

Why do you assume that Joseph’s "injury" is something other than what the club say. Are you some sort of conspiracist?

If you were at the Wolves game you may have seen him get a knock on the head and MAY have noticed that he was not quite right afterwards. Perhaps he was still dazed when he failed to spot the danger before Doyle’s goal.

Any sort of concussion in sports usually brings on a 7 days rest from the Doctor.

Don’t be so suspicious of EFC !!

I suspect conspiracy theory’s gone amok here .... if the guy is injured - he’s injured. End of.

I’m inclined to agree with David and Martin. He clashed heads with a Wolves player last weekend and is out with a head injury. Where's the mystery?

Concussion doesn’t normally set in for an hour or so after the incident so it’s perfectly plausible. Too much scepticism can’t be healthy, Jay!

Is this a medical fact Lyndon. I pretty much reckon you know at the time of impact if you are concussed (unfortunately know from experience) or not as you have no idea what the fuck is going on. Never heard of concussion setting in after an hour or so.

If your assessment is plausible Lyndon, I would tend to suggest it would be a mild concussion. Given this, he should have been fine to play the following week. Medicos are over cautious nowadays.

Here we go. Let’s all pile on Yobo for the next month or so.
Steven- it is not unheard of for head injury victims to shake of the knock, think all is well, then go home and die in thier sleep. Not all concussions are the same and surely it is better safe than sorry. I have no medical degree so I think it is probably wise to defer to the medical experts.

OS says Yobo has thigh strain.

Now that Baines is injured. Is it time to sign Michael Ball? He just rejected a move to join Eriksson at Notts County, believing he can still play at the highest level.

Can you name any players that this has happened to Pete out of curiosity?? Me thinks a bit over the top with that comment. Not looking to entertain a conspiracy theory, just struggle to see how the knock (if you can call it that) would keep him out.

I’m with Jason and would believe the thigh strain as the reason.

Steven - not a player, but didn't something similar happen with Natasha Richardson recently?

Just for the record, I wasn't suggesting some sort of conspiracy, I just wondered what sort of injury other than severe concussion would keep him out of the next 2 games especially as it wasn't mentioned until the squad for Benfica was announced.

Damian, spot on. She fell on a ski slope, appeared to be ok for a few hours, then died.

I don’t know about every case but, yes, it’s often the case that the swelling in the brain usually manifests itself in symptoms about an hour after the incident. It was certainly the case for me — I had no idea I was concussed until an hour after slamming my head into the pavement falling off my bike.

Now, going back to Jay’s original scepticism, there is a rumour circulating that Yobo and Moyes had a bust-up before the game on Thursday because Joe went AWOL. No idea if it’s true or not but perhaps Jay was right to question his omission after all!

Steve - I will concede my scenario is dramatic, it is also real. Head injuries, like spine injuries, are in a different class than others. They should be handled with greater care. Chances are little is wrong with Yobo and nothing would happen if he was played but, why would you want to risk it. Frankly, pushing players out before they are fully recovered from any injury does more harm than good. The magic sponge never really was!

Lyndon
I do now find it strange that he was reported as suffering with a head injury immediately before the game but now the operating site is reporting a thigh strain.

The other question I had was why he was only reported as being injured just prior to the game and not all week.

All rather strange to me especially after the manager's strange comment that players who make mistakes will be left out once the others are fit.

Re: the conspiracy theory; last season Anichebe was listed as an injured player on the OS shortly after he and Moyes had their bust-up. His injury classified as ’unkown’.

One thing I find frustrating on the OS injured players listing is the number of players whose expected return time is ’unkown’. I’d like more transparency around this area so we know if a player is expected to be out for just 1 week or 1 month.

I think this adds to the question that has been debated in the past as to whether our team is just unlucky with injuries, or whether our staff should be called to account. If they don’t know the seriousness of an injury and when a player is expected back, what do they know?
