Team vs Spurs

Comments (230)

Just heard we'll have late fitness tests on the walking wounded. Media are still reporting Yobo suffering with a head injury?

This would be my prefeered team if the fitness tests prove positive:

Howard
Neill Yobo Distin Baines
Bily Heitinga Rodwell Fellaini
Saha Jo

With Cahill and/or Yak to come on second half.

Should be good enough to get at least a draw.....?

Errr... do they actually do draws and replays in this competition any more? Or is it straight to extra time and then penalty shoot-outs (which I think we are actually getting better at... must update that page!). I should know but I've completely forgotten. Shameful, init.

Let's make this the Thread du Jour...

I see tonights game as an oppurtunity rather than a hinderance as winning it will get us to the latter stages of the Carling Cup and provide us with a platform to win the competition, thus securing European qualification for the fourth consecutive season. Considering Spurs injury problems (I know, I know...), I fancy us to win tonight. COYB

Jay

If we can put out a team something like that, I wouldnt be too discouraged .
As Ian has indicated, Spurs have their absentees too, particularly Lennon and King. I believe Kranjcar is also cup tied, so that evens things up a bit.
I have no idea if Harrys ambitions are higher or the same as Moyes’ ie does he see Tottenham as genuine contenders for a CL place? If so, he wont risk " borderline" players with niggles. I really hope we can do it tonight, it will be something of a small payback for all those terrific fans of ours who went to Lisbon!!!

Will be straight to extra time and then penalties, if no result.
Does anyone know why we are being forced to play tonight when we played on the Sunday? Is it just for TV scheduling?
Silly question probably!

Travelling squad for Spurs game -

Howard, Nash, Hibbert, Heitinga, Neill, Distin, Cahill, Fellaini, Rodwell, Gosling, Coleman, Jo, Yakubu, Saha, Baxter, Wallace, Akpan, Agard, Duffy.

So no Billy and no Yobo.

I imagine the team will be
Howard,
Neill, Heitinga, Distin, Hibbert,
Gosling, Fellaini, Rodwell, Cahill,
Jo, Saha
(Yak and Baxter to come off, Coleman if necessary).

I would like to see;
Howard
Neill, Heitinga, Distin, Coleman
Baxter, Rodwell, Cahill, Gosling
Saha, Yakubu.

I think that if we can change our habit of conceding first (as in recent games), then we stand a good chance of moving into the next round. This is a ground that can also be as intimidating as the Old Lady if we give them a sniff of an advantage. Good luck to the boys tonight.
I think I may have asked too late in the "Injuries" post, but I am curious to know when a teams season gets put on "hold" due to an excessive amount of absentees through injury. What’s the guidelines on this?

Gerry I thought it was a case of putting a special dispensation request to the FA to seek to sign replacement players for a position(s) should your entire cover for that position be injured such as your keeper. The players thus available would be journeymen surely?

Simple reason we are being asked to play tonight...There is another club in North London who is playing tomorrow evening (I forget who they are) and they are playing another club from Liverpool, whose name escapes me as well. The authorities think the other club from our area are made up of a bunch of thugs who can’t read or spell and they have to use all of their resources to keep an eye on them and can’t spare anyone to go to White Hart Lane the same night. Pity.

I read somewhere earlier online today that Lennon wouldn’t be playing. If that is true, with a less threatening pressence on Spur’s right side wouldn’t that give more reason to allow Coleman to play on the left and let Neill sit in the middle dependant on Yobo’s fitness. I’d be worried that Pavlichenko would be trying to prove something to Redknapp and rather have Neill covering him.

Looking at the Spurs team we shouldn't be afraid to have a go. Their hardly Barcelona and their bench ain't much stronger than ours!! May as well go for it when we have a few goalscorers on the pitch from the start!! And then start praying for a few extra bodies back for the weekend! Saha 1-0 me thinks. COYB!

Off topic, but a quick question. Got the Everton direct catalogue today, and me and my little lad noticed that inside there were baby grows and kids pyjamas with the chang logo, and then Chang soda written under it. My little lad hates getting the kit with no logo on, so he asked why they couldn’t put Chang soda on the kids footy tops. Does anyone know if there is a reason why the club don’t do it?

Gavin, thanks, I was aware of something similar, but I remember one team at the start of a season (wasn’t it Blackburn?) who had so many ill, they ended up starting the season 6 or 7 matches behind.
Surely there would come a time in the not too distant future where we could claim a similar situation. I don’t want that to happen, but it would be interesting to know how close we are to this scenario.......

I have no idea Brian, but I bought my 2 year old the toddler pyjamas with Chang Soda on and he has that as his ’kit’. Much to the annoyance of my wife who hates the thought of me taking our son out dressed in his pj’s! I don’t know why they can’t put it on the actual replica kits as well. I mean, it’s only a voluntary code that Everton have signed upto anyway with regards to not having alcohol on the junior kits.

Yes this looks like a third stright defeat, but 1) Yobo has been missing from the last few games, therefore that unsettles the defence; 2) we do not have players on the bench able to come on to change a game due to the amount of injuries we have; and 3) stop being so negative, we are only a few wins away from the top 6.

And to think some of our fans thought our shambolic summer transfer policy was good.

Kenwright & Moyes wrecked our season before it began. Yes, we have injuries; however, the 2 key players were already on long-term injuries. Rather than get good players in, we look for versatile master-of-none players in.

In the summer we needed a new right back, cover at left back, Powerful ball winner in midfield and a pacey winger. We got none of those and lost Lescott. Still we can still choose to live in the fantasy land some do were they beleive we will come good like last season.

In fairness I have to agree in playing players out of position rather then using a bunch of mediocre youngsters.

Let's be fair, Baxter is a pot head out on bail. What talent he had at a younger age looks to have been wasted.

Agard couldn’t make it at Aresnal and hasn’t improved any at Everton.

Shane Duffy is the next Peter Clarke. Highly tipped but unlikely to get more then half-a-dozen appearances.

Seamus Coleman has made a horrible start to his Everton career.

Hardly anything is known about James Wallace. He’s a bigger enigma then John Paul Kissock.

Nothing will change until the useless coward kenwright is removed, but it looks like it will be too late by then.

Majority of fans are happy to finish in the top ten and treat that as a good season which gives Kenwright and Co carte blanche to do what he pleases without protest. I can see our fans coming on Saturday night saying, "I know we've lost four games and not won in seven games, but we've got injuries, Kenwright is a blue, he got rid of Johnson"

I now the injuries will be brought up, but it would make more sense to have the like of Jo playing as a wide player, he couldn’t do any worse than Cahill has.

We were probably hoping for a bit more after the late loss against Bolton but when you're down, you're down and people keep kicking you. Seems when the chips are down with other clubs they find a good spirit and get a result or two but when it’s Everton — nothing doing.

Moyes just doesn’t seem to be inspirational anymore. If it’s not him then it must be that the squad is just not good enough, plain and simple... and remember, he built the squad.

Villa on Saturday is now so crucial for Moyes's future. There can only be so many injury excuses used... and eventually the axe must fall before the season falls apart.

One recurring theme of this site is how Neville should be replaced as captain. Now he is out injured, I think people will finally realise how big a role he plays in the team. We have no fight, no leadership. Cahill has been mentioned a few times to replace him and has shown he is not a captain in the 2 games he has done it. Get well soon, Phil — your club neds you.

John Martin, I dont think thats true. We were doing great when Neville was out of the team, but losing Pienaar and now Bily were the last straws because now we have NO creativity whatsoever, no one who can make a pass, no one LOOKING for a pass, and so we can’t keep possession and are always on the backfoot

Fuck this. That’s it! I’m going over to the OTHER side to watch a decent game of football. We should ALL do the same.

Jimmy, the team is lacking in leadership right now. That's what Neville gives us, the games you talk about us playing great were Blackburn, AEK Athens & Hull, hardly the best opposition in the world. Portsmouth should have hammered us and when we have played 2 good teams in the last 3 matches we have got battered by them. We lack creativity, yes, but that's not going to stop us conceding or teams walking through our midfield.

Thanks for the comments lads.

It was a painful privilege if you understand.

The thing that I find most worrying is that for the first time I’m seeing cracks in Moyes's confidence.

HE’ STARTING TO CRITICISE THE PLAYERS AND THE BOARD THROUGH THE MEDIA and is disassociating himself with the performances and player availability. That is not a good sign.

Let's hope the loan Billy Bullshit took out is for players in January and not DK.

That would see me off altogether.

John,

Please don’t put this down to the lack of Neville.

That’s a reactionary and illogical remark.
