The Real Problems...

Comments (9)

Apart from the obvious crippling injury list i feel there is more obvious problems with this Everton team and squad.

1. Simple really we have no pace what so ever, no pace means teams can push up on us condence the play with no fear of us hitting them on the counter attack... (When was the last time we scored from the counter attack?) Pace gives you space on the pitch, defenders don't want to get to tight in case they get rolled and cant catch the player. With our lack of movement and our lack of slick passing what are we left with? Set pieces, hit and hope football and very boring to watch, and I blame the management.

2. Relating to point one this is Moyes's philosphy of playing percentage football, it has to be, look at Wigan? Their new manager insists that they play the ball on the deck at all costs. On paper our squad is much better then theirs so why can't we string two passes in a row?

3. Signings, people say Moyes hasn't had the money, well he has had more money than any other manager in our history. I like the way he buys young players, but he NEVER buys pace (apart from Johnson)... why, Moyes???

Every single team in the Premier League has pace, it gives you options, we don't have one player on our team that can beat a man!!! I find this shocking to say the least. And don't say these players aren't out there, I'm watching Arsenal v Liverpool tonight and every player in the Arsenal team has pace and didn't cost a fortune and what a joy to watch.

If only moyes could take a lesson from Wenger... the game has changed, the modern game has changed, it's about pace and keeping the ball and I'm afraid, if Moyes doesn't change his ways, we could be beyond repair in a few years time.

Pace is a big part of today’s game and strength is also, we lack these two qualities throughout our entire squad. A lot of people I speak to who go the games agree that we lack pace and have been crying out for a such a player for a long time, yet Moyes can not see this.

On the style of play, we just don’t have one, I do not enjoy watching Everton anymore, which really breaks my heart to say.

Maybe if we get our more influential players back things will improve, I hope so anyway.

Could not agree more with the pace and strength shout, even all our kids coming through minus Rodwell appear to be the same old type , small little grafters.
It does make you wonder on this shout about how much home work he does before signing players as everyone we sign we are told wehe does not know their best position yet and for £10 -£15M he should.

Sean - I think you make some very valid points. We do lack pace and I think opposing teams realise very quickly how toothless & one dimensional we are.

The Benfica game was the classic example of late. First half they were way better but gave us respect & so didn’t push on but by half time had us well sussed.

Second half realising we posed NO threat, battered us then luckily took their foot off the gas, as it was ’job done’.

Absolutely spot on Sean. I have been stating that for a long time in this column. Cannot Moyes see this in players before he signs them? Fellaini, Bily and Gosling are prime examples.

Players we already have — Cahill and Osman have no real speed but Cahill at least a matchwinner for a while but not so much now as defenders constantly grab him. Even Mikel doesn’t have a turn of foot but makes up for it with great vision and skill. Peanuts is the only real spark but passes and shoots inconsistently.

We don’t compare one iota to a lot of other midfielders in other teams and even the fullbacks of Bolton gave us a lot of problems with speed. Hibbo has speed but cannot attack players with the ball but that may be on orders of DM to keep hoofing the ball long.

I don’t think it’s fair to suggest Moyes hasn’t acknowledged the lack of pace. The problem is, barring a few exceptions, he will only buy players he genuinely believes will add to the squad (rather than just make up the numbers).

Pacey players come with a premium. We’ve looked at several over the last few years, Kieran Richardson, Sean Wright-Phillips, Downing, Kightley but Moyes has either been unconvinced, priced-out or, in the case of Obina (sp?), beaten by red-tape.

Agree with every single word in your post Sean. Someone forward it to Moyes please!

Pace has been an even bigger problem without Pienaar in the squad. We could use some more players like him, creative, pacey, smart. As far as our squad compared to Wigan, we have no chemistry, that’s the problem.

With so many injuries, the players simply don’t build the necessary in-field relationships. Take for example our left side last year with Pienaar and Baines. It seemed like every time we took the ball up the left we got an opportunity for a goal. The new players and those playing out of position haven’t gotten time to build chemistry like that.

Last night on talk sport I heard a Hull supporter calling for David Moyes to be their new manager. He would be perfect. I have no doubt he would save them. Crisis is what he does best and, frankly, I believe he will be dealing with a crisis at Goodison. He will keep us safe and many supporters will be filled with gratitude. He cannot, however move us on. It’s not what he does.

We need a couple of luxury players. Players who cannot necessarily play in more than one position. Players who will not be in our box defending corners. Players who do not fit the Moyes profile. We have spent quite a bit of money and nowhere has he bought pace and flair. It’s safety first and sneak a result. Perfect for Hull, not good enough for Everton.

"look at Wigan" - "On paper our squad is much better then theirs" - "Apart from the obvious crippling injury list".

All from the original post.

"every player in the Arsenal team has pace". They’ll win everything this year - again - I suppose.

"we don’t have one player on our team that can beat a man" - which means that neither Saha nor Fellaini scored against Bolton by doing that.

"he NEVER buys pace (apart from Johnson)". We could argue over the logic here, but might remember that AJ was denied many penalties and at least one goal I can remember by refs who are very suspicious of this kind of player. They might get totally pissed off by having the likes of Craig Bellamy - another success story for pace - shouting in their faces every match.

But as you say Sean - simple really.
