Team vs BATE?

Comments (31)

I'm considering a trip to Goodison on Thursday night. £35 for an adult/junior ticket for a game which is a dead ruber. I'd be interested to hear who people think Moyes will play and who gets a rest.

Is it reasonable to play an entire team of reserves?

£35 for a match that is effectively a friendly?? That's shocking — EFC should be Charging a fiver for adults at the gate for this one — otherwise we are in for another embaressing half-empty stadium live on C5.

With regards to the team, Dave, I would bet my house that we will see Carlo Nash make his debut; it would be madness to gamble Howard in this game with our recent injury luck. It may also be a perfect time to give Neville and Osman an hour (providing they are still due to return this month as we are told). If those two are available I would choose the following:

GK Nash; RB Coleman; LB Baines (we can't rest as no-one else); CD Hibbert; CD Duffy ; RM Osman; CM Neville; CM Pienaar (need to see him central more) LM Bily; CF Jo; CF Yak - (needs a full 90 mins for his fitness)

Subs: Howard, Saha, Cahill, Fellaini, Rodwell, Agard, Baxter.

What about Garbutt for LB?

Give plenty of the kids a go. Duffy, at the back, Baxter and Agard, with a couple of senior players to help them thru. Our business plan if you like seems to be youth makes up the numbers of the squad. So give ’em a go!

I expect we will.

I’d love to see most of the kids given a run out. Moyes has already shown he treats the Competition with respect so I see no harm in giving players a break. Personally I would like to see,

Nash
Coleman
Duffy
Mustafi
Baines (so he can practice his set pieces)
Baxter
Wallace
Rodwell (played with all these through the ranks so can be the ’experience’ we need)
Fellaini
Agard
Yak

Fill the subs up anyway you can or like. I’m guessing Moyes wouldn’t go to this extreme but I’d like to see an explanation if anymore regular first teamers get injured in this non-event!

David Denby, have to wholeheartedly agree with you on GK and defence, I’m hoping to see more of Coleman and Duffy later this season if we get ahead in a couple of games, Coleman certainly gives us an attacking wing back option.

I also can’t see any harm if giving Yakubu more pitch time as long as he has support from Agard and/or Akpan. I’m going either way as I have the auto-cup on my season ticket but don’t think this will be a sell-out. It’s a shame the club don’t offer something like a "dad and lads" ticket to get bums on seats, money is money and better than an empty swathe of seats.

I think Moyes is going to be torn on this one for a few reasons.

I suspect that as the team is returning to some reasonable form he’d love to give them another game, under no pressure to let them express themselves,s and hopefully grab a few and obtain the confidence necessary to push on in the Prem.

Or

He cant risk any more injuries particularly as it really is an unnecessary game and he’ll want to rest the players who have either played all season already – Howard , Baines, Fellaini and possibly Rodwell, and those clearly who are playing regularly with knocks – Pinnear, and Saha. I suspect also as Billy must be into his 9 or 10 month of continuous football he’ll want to give him a rest.

So’ I’ll go with leaning towards the 2nd option but with Baines and Pinnear added and suggest the team will be
Nash
Coleman, Hibbert, Duffy, Baines,
Wallace, Rodwell, Baxter, Pienaar,
Agard, Yakubu
with the others as subs.

It's important to win this game to keep up the momentum and team spirit. Everton have been in a slump for a long time and only recently shown signs for improving. A loss right now might endanger that fragile team spirit. For this reason I hope Moyes puts out a side capable of beating Bate and maintaining this run for form.

Maybe start a couple of kids (Duffy, Coleman) but use the senior players to win this fixture.

I dont think it would do any harm to give some of the senior lads 45 mins and see if they can't rack a few goals up and then bring the kids on second half... although I would like to give Coleman 90 minutes and rest Rodwell and any others that are carrying niggles.

Isn’t Moyes limited by having to use players that were nominated in the Europa League squad? So, in other words he can’t necessarily chuck in a load of youngsters unless they’re named in the above squad.

As BA of the A-team might say of our C-team. "I pity the fool who bought tickets for Everton v BATE."

Inelgible/injured/out on loan or doubtful: Neville, Gosling, Jags, Yobo, Distin, Heitinga, Neill, Arteta, Gosling, Wallace, Baxter, Osman, Anichebe, Vaughan, Jutkiewicz, Ruddy.

Probably rested: Pienaar, Saha.

David Reynier: Either flush with cash or really really bored.

Here’s the Everton squad list at Uefa.com which excludes Neill and Heitinga but includes just about all the lads, most on the B-list.... Guess I need to read up what that means; are we not supposed to have a nominated squad of 25? Are the B-list players eligible automatically in case of injury? Why were Uefa ever allowed to make football so complicated??

Billy needs a rest. Cahill would probably benefit from sitting this one out. Rodwell, Saha, and everyone who has little injuries will probably be out. We need to beat Birmingam next weekend. We tied 2 of the top 5 teams in the league so now we have to prove that we have truly improved.

I don’t see the point of playing guys who don’t need to be playing 3 games this week and could really use a week off. I think the squad is going to look something like this:

Nash
Coleman, Hibbert, Duffy, Garbutt
No clue on the midfield
Agard, Yakubu

If we play senior players, Moyes has no right to complain about any new injuries that may occur. I’d play

Nash
Hibbert (capt)
Duffy
Mustafi
Garbutt
Coleman
Wallace
Rodwell
Bily
Baxter
Yakubu

It has to be the kids. The game has no impact whatsoever, either on ourselves or BATE - we’re through and they’re out, and it’s as simple as that. Add to that that Brum have a midweek game, and Moyes should be resting his entire 11 for Brum as that is a must win. Give the Yak some game time, and Rodwell as captain.

So I’d go:
Nash
Coleman, Mustafi, Duffy, Garbutt
Baxter, Wallace, Rodwell, Akpan
Yak, Agard

Don’t know what this B list means, but Rodwell is on it and he’s played already this season, so the other players on the list must be eligible.

Let's run with the kids on this one. Why not? As mentioned above, it is effectively a friendly so let them loose. I love watching the young lads before the match, big time nerves and looking round and then going hell for leather for the first few minutes!! Should not be doing that? Exactly...

Let them do it in something that is more than a friendly but results don’t really count. Let them loose, Moyes!! I would play Yak though, that fucker needs to run hell for leather. Will love it when I see him about 8 kg lighter, we will have a strong end to the year.... if only we could ever get off to a decent start!!!

Ok fine start the kids.

Lose the game.

Lose the fragile confidence we have.

Lose the small unbeaten run we are on.

Then we’ll have to start from the beginning again in our next Prem game.

If the kids play and lose a match which effectively is meaningless, why would the first choice players lose "fragile confidence"? Surely their egos are not that fragile! They know — I hope — that they could do better and they’ll definitely be happier after having a week off and feeling fresh for the next PL game.

I reckon it’ll be a mixtue of experience and a couple of kids. It's not in Moyes’s make-up to make wholehearted changes and he won't want the senior pros who he does put in being on the wrong end of a result.

So expect Coleman, Duffy & maybe Agard to start. Can’t see many other changes.

After the Athens game I was advocating just playing the reserves & resting as many of the first teamers who have played without a break all season to prevent further injuries.

However, as we’re coming into a little (only a little mind) bit of form I would play most of the first teamers for an hour then make changes to give them a rest. The worst thing now (other than more injuries) is to lose momentum going into the more important game against Birmingham on Sunday.

My team would be:
Howard
Coleman
Hibbert
Duffy
Baines
Bily
Rodwell
Fellaini
Pienaar
Cahill
Yak
On the bench:
Nash
Mustafi
Neville (if fit)
Osman (if fit)
Baxter
Wallace
Agard.

Hope we play the kids and still twat them...Their season finished over a month ago so theya’ll have been hammering the Zamak ale, plus they are already knocked out and may view it as a fun trip to the City of Culture 2008 and be on the ale and on the pull!! It's a funny old game hey!

I agree with Tony. If we made large changes to the squad for the game and we lost how on earth would that cause confidence to drop?

Look at it this way, if we didn’t have a game midweek do you think Moyes would organise a friendly just incase the players couldn’t hold the recently gained confidence for more than a week? I don’t think so.

We need to keep the run going in the league and improve on it. This is a meaningless game. We have nothing to lose so what on earth is the point of risking players who we need in the league team? Ok so none of us can see into the future but if you want to see a strong team out then how will you feel come Sunday if any more injuries are picked up and we’re struggling for a team against Birmingham. If it was do or die then fine get the first team out. It’s not though so give them a rest and give the youngsters a taste.

Jo
Yakubu

Playing the kids and losing wouldn’t affect the confidence of the first team at all. Anyone with a slight knock will be rested. I’d bet large amounts of money that Rodwell won’t play given he’s been playing with a groin problem and Moyes is on record as saying he’s wanted to rest him but couldn’t get him out of the team.

Players like Yakubu and Bilyaletdinov might profit from playing so I’d hope to see them in. I also think you need at least one experienced player at centre back to hold things together, although given the current state of the squad, that’s likely to be Hibbert (possibly wearing the armband).

Moyes has to play the kids! Simple. if If we get any first team players injured he should be sacked for being incompetent. With our luck with injuries its a cert someone would get injured. It makes sense to give the kids playing time.

You have to keep winning to build confidence.

Playing the kids runs the risk of losing the game and destroying what little confidence the players have.

Am I right in thinking our next Prem game is Birmingham? They have now won five games on the trot and are flying.

We simply must beat Birmingham and to do it we’ll need every shred of confidence and momentum we can gain.

A lose to Bate would not be a good idea just as the team appears to be turning a corner. Moyes should use a couple of kids but play mostly senior players.

There is no doubt that Moyes will want three points on Sunday. On Thursday he will also try to win — or at least not lose.

I've just watched the second half of the Birmingham - Blackburn game. They’re on a good run, and without in any way underestimating them, our best should be able to win.

So, if there ever was an argument for using what you have available in the squad, this week is the one. GP would welcome a start for Coleman, and Duffy too on Thursday. Hibbo will fly the flag.

I wish we could protect Baines... but it's unlikely.

Saha and Rodwell should be in suits. Bily, Felli and Pienaar on the bench.

Half a game for the Yak.

Tim Cahill has often spoken about the calibre of our lads coming through. Give him the job of helping Baxter, Wallace and the others to show their qualities.

Chris. Why is it disgraceful? Because a lot will go knowing that? Or a lot will stay away knowing that? Why is it stupid? The match has to be played; Moyes is using it as a friendly/training opportunity to blood some youngsters and give them their Everton debuts in a European night game at Goodison Park.... what on earth could be wrong, disgraceful or stupid about that?

Or is it that fact that you bought a ticket based on a presumption of us loising a game that we actually won? What was that you were saying about disgraceful and stupid? Get a grip, indeed.
