Door Open for Baines

Comments (20)

So Lescott's dodgy knee has acted up and it looks like he'll be out till March. Wayne Bridge is also out over the same period. So the door is now wide open for Leighton Baines to make a claim for the England left-back spot.

Separately though, while I wish Lescott all the best for a swift recovery, it's a real relief to know that he's not on Everton's books anymore. The knee was due to go, and it's better that it happened at City rather than when he was with us.

In fact, the Lescott deal is looking more and more like a very favourable one for us in the long run.

Indeed Luke

Our boy has been blowing hot 'n cold recently, but he’ll be acutely aware of the situation. Let's hope this makes him strive a little harder for that elusive consistency... he’s easily good enough on his day.

I think what Tim Luke meant to say was that the door is open for Baines to get a foothold in the England WC squad. I don’t really think Baines will claim the leftback spot as Ashley Cole will not get dislodged from his current position, unless due to injury or a drastic loss of form. But apart from Baines, I doubt any other Englishman in the Everton squad will likely get a nod from Capello.

Hmm. How about:

Phil Neville and Phil Jagielka? I think both have a hope of making the squad if they both come back from injury successfully.

Baines certainly has a shout if he can play well consistently.

This World Cup will hold more than usual interest for blues fans. Almost certain to be involved for the respective countries will be:

Americans, Tim Howard and Landon Donavon (assuming he signs for us).
Nigerians, Yakubu and Joseph Yobo.
Australians, Tim Cahill and Lucas Neil.
South Africa's Stephen Pienaar.
Johnnie Heitinga of Holland.
On the fringe of selection would be Baines of England and Saha of France.
Jags and Rodwell would have an extreme outside chances.

And Bily of Russia went close to qualifying as did Duffy of Ireland. Until his knee problem ex-Everton Lescott was also in the frame while England’s main hope rests on Rooney who is another ex-Blue.

Interest in those players might encourage TW to drop it’s parochialism for once by setting up a section devoted to our players in the WC.

Totally disagree with you Dick. Can’t imagine anyone wanting to know how often our lads use the toilet!

I can’t see Neville making the squad unless he’s seen as Mr Utility but Baines has a real shout and Jags should be a starter with an in-form Terry in my opinion.

Stephen Warnock and Ashley Cole are both in front of him. Lescott is only out for 5 weeks.

Hopefully it will give Bainsey a kick up the arse and improve his form. Last year, him and Pienaar were quality on the left but the pair haven’t really played together this year. He’s got a chance, but he needs to recapture last season's form. Hopefully with results improving, his confidence and form will too.

The only player of ours that has any chance of making the Squad is Jags. Neville has no chance and Rodwell hasn't even proved himself for us yet consistently. I do think though he will get there eventually... but not 2010.

Then again, Luke, one might think that the door is open for Citteh to put in a £10 million (?) bid for Baines...

I don’t see anyone who is comfortably ahead of Leighton as back-up to Ashley Cole. I think its a decent incentive for him and Mr Capello certainly has no interest in doing anything other than picking the best squad, irrespective of the player's reputation.

Baines has little chance — his form was far better last season — and whoever said Neville is having a laugh.

Jags, if he proves his form upon return of fitness, is a decent shout and good enough although still needs to work on his distribution, a clear example was the goal he gave away in the friendly against Spain.

I think you are all missing someone here... TONY HIBBERT!!

Captain for tonight's Europa League game! Played a couple of games at Centre Back recently and can be cover for Right Back. Seems like a no-brainer to me.

Hibbert for England!

Kev i couldn’d agree more, nothing frustrate me more as an Everton follower than the ocntinued ommission of Hibbert from consecutive england squads. The guy is quick & pacy, fantastic distributionsand has a keen eye for goal, what more can you ask for form a right back?

The lescott deal was always great business. What wasn’t great business was the way we let it drag on till just before window shut and the fact we never got cover at centre half / left back

Brian,
The deal was dragged out by Billy Bullshit so he wouldn’t have to spend it.
We should have a fortune in the Summer, Europa League Champs ,top 8 finish in the league, Cup run, the Sky Money, the DK money oh and I guess we will not get the players we wanted cos of our wage structure but the last minute loan signing of ****** more than makes up for that. And the return of Arteta is like a £15m signing.
I don’t think Moyes will stand for the Bullshit again now that DK has been blown away.

Agreed, Tim. Lescott in exchange for Bily, Heitinga, Distin. That’s looking more and more like a good deal to me.

Steve - deal was dragged out by Billy Bullshit - I remember Moyes publicly saying he makes the decisions at our club. So the delay must rest with Moyes.

Brian - we got Distin at cover for CB and LB. Personally I don’t think he’s adequate but again, Moyes's decision.

Tony Hibbert for England?????

If England want to be out-paced down the right, bundle players over in the box or give up possession, yeah maybe.

I can understand the whole supporting the local lad bit, but its about time we understand that he is awful.

I keep telling my mates year-in and year-out that Moyes needs to solve the right back problem once and for all (Hibbert, Neville and Neill are either too old or not good enough).

I wish Lescott all the best for a lengthy injury and and to miss the World Cup as well.
