Felliani or Rodwell or Neville?

Comments (22)

Now with Felliani settling in, in the holding role and doing very well... (by the way, it is only by chance that Felliani is playing there; if Rodwell and Neville never got injured, he would still be trying to fit in behind the front man. It was the same with Jags, awful in midfield, then Joe Yobo got injured, Jags steps in and has been outstanding...)

So... with Felliani doing an outstanding job in the holding role, with his excellent distribution (forward passes, not crab like passes), is their room for Rodwell or Neville?

If it ain't broke... don't fix it.

Neville to his more accustomed role at right back and Rodwell as Fellaini’s understudy.

Fellaini! Rodwell is still not there and lord just make him a CB so we don’t have to buy one. And Neville? Please.

’The New Viera & Petit’ (Rodwell & Fellaini)

Shout it loudly, but we are going to have our very own version of Viera/Petit with Fellaini and Rodwell over the next few years. They’ll be the best midfield pairing in the league easily and totally dominate games for us.

Both massive six footers with that left-foot / right-foot combination; strong, aggressive, athletic, good technique and passing. A tore de force together...

The future is very bright indeed with this midfield pairing.

John M - I like your logic. If we can hang on to JR then that pairing would be immense. The Fellaini bashing by others has been amusing & disappointing. I alway expected him to be a star for us & in his right position. He’s now in it & starting to catch up with his strength & fitness after msssing most of pre-season.

Those two, with Arteta, Pienaar (if we can keep him) and Bily offer us strength and guile. And plenty of spport in reserve too.

If Arteta comes back the same player he was before the injury, then pair him with Fellaini, and put JR at CB with Jags, and Jags can be his mentor; even Marshy might say that's a half-decent side

Neville at right back. Fellaini in midfield. This is my ideal squad.

Howard
Neville, Jags, Rodwell, Baines
Billy, Arteta, Fellaini, Pienaar
Cahill
Saha

I could see Coleman playing on the wing at some point. He doesn’t seem to be the best defender but he is great going forward so it makes sense. If Cahill can find form and score some, he should start.

The question is purely theoretical as we never have a full and fit squad of players to choose from. Fellaini, Neville, Rodwell and Arteta have never been fit together sand are never likely to be with our shambolic training methods. A new fitness coach should be our first priority. Just be thankful tht Fellaini is fit at present cos none of the other three are.

This is something that has been on my mind.

Neville must be in the side. We need him there shouting at everyone - making sure everyone knows what their jobs are and doing them. Hopefully we might see a clean sheet for a change.

However, the Big Fella is doing well in his current midfield role so I would like to see him given more time to develop.....and though historically Neville has been a more rounded RB than Hibbert but.... Hibbo has actually been one of our more reliable players recently so to drop him would seem strange...... So what to do???

Cahill has been underperforming for a long time so maybe you drop him. Not a formation I would want for the long term, but maybe for now we should go with:

Saha
Pienaar Bilyaletdinov Osman
Fellaini Neville
Baines Heitinga Neill Hibbert
Howard

Then hope that one of Vaughan/Cahill/Yakubu/Arteta
finds some fitness and form to drop one of them in and make this more attacking.

Interesting that most people’s ideal 11 would include Cahill. Don’t get me wrong, I love the guy. Combative, tough as nails, leaps like a kangaroo, and never gives up.

Somehow I think if we’re to improve as a passing side, we’ll eventually have to get rid of Cahill as he’s not a true striker (first touch, pace), and neither is he a true midfielder (passing, tackling, vision).

I hope to see this team by about Feb this year:

Howard
Neville, Jags, Heitinga, Baines
Pienaar, Fellaini, Arteta, Bily
Yakubu/Donovan,
Saha

Dont be silly Colin, Fellaini has been playing in the same position even when Rodwell was playing, but Rodwell is not as good as people think and surprise surprise Rodwell gets injured and the teams starts to play better and Fellaini seems to be improving because of it.

Look lads, knowing Moyes, once Neville is back up to match fitness, he will be straight back into the middle, and Fellaini will end up playing just behind Saha or the Yak.

Knowing Moyes Neville will be left on tha bench and given as long as possible for his leg to fully heal untill the team is getting out battled in the middle and Neville will be unleashed for Osmen or Cahill.

I dont think Fellaini is playing the holding midfield role right now. He’s getting about the pitch. I expect Neville and rightfully so to be alongside him soon. To give us a bit more steel in their, something that has been missing for months. As for Rodwell, loads of potential and hopefully could become a very good midfielder as him & Fellaini has lots of promiss but not yet ready to be our permanent midfield duo especially when we come up against the best midfielders inthe prem. thats if Billy Bullshitter doesnt sell Rodwell off 1st to finance next summers transfer fiasco’s

Big Fella has been doing well these last few games, but until he gets more control, I am scared to death of letting him be a defensive midfielder. Short of being a good tackler, he has all the needed "class" to excel on the field at the role, however, tackling is important AND he seems to let others "get under his skin".

He gets way too many reckless yellow cards - sometimes he’s baited into it, sometimes he lashes out stupidly, sometimes he’s just an easy target for the refs (like AJ was after Wenger). He still needs to prove that he can remain calm and collected before I’d hand him that role fultime. Neville and Rodwell’s temperaments are better suited for the DM role, though I like the idea of Nev at RB, Rodwell and Jags at CB and Fella at DM... he just needs to prove he can stay out of trouble.

He hasn’t,.

Mick Wrende, a very pertinent point. Why is Yakubu so unfit? Should he not be playing 90 minutes for the reserves? Why did Lukas arrive at Motherwell apparently unfit? James Vaughan is coming on at the end of games and is busting a gut to prove himself. He’ll get hurt again. Why not give him a start? If he’s not good enough to start then why is he good enough to turn a game around?

The substitutions of David Moyes are beyond comprehension. It’s his biggest failing as a manager and, in my view, he has many.

Ciaran,
Since when has Fellaini been playing defensive midfield?

Bily and Pienaar on the wings.

Cahill behind the front man.

That leaves Osman and Felliani.

I dont think Osman has got the stature or strength to protect our two under sized center backs????????

So what you’re saying is that because there’s 5 midfielders on the pitch, that one of them must be playing a defensive midfield position?

Not sure that makes much sense... For me Fellaini’s been playing a box-to-box position — not DM.

Mick, what is it that gives you so much insight into our training methods? Are you there watching everyday? Have a man on the inside? Or just another fan who thinks that cos a team’s got lots of injuries, it must have something to do with the ’training methods’? Listen, you don’t sustain 5 cruciate ligament injuries and 1 achilles tear because Moyes doesn’t make them warm up proper.

Andy, the Yak didn’t look unfit today. He looked interested. If you wanna criticise Moyes, then criticise him for not getting the likes of the Yak fired up. He may still be recovering match fitness, but he won’t get this in the reserves. Vaughan is on the bench because he’s better half-fit than a 17-year-old, which is our only other option. And Lukas J was well known as a lazy fuck, which is why he was bombed off up there in the first place.

Yes.

Carsley.
Neville.
Rodwell.
Felliani.
Yesterday, when Cahill went off, Moyes put Neville on and pushed Felliani up front..

Fellaini, who isn’t a defensive midfielder, but is playing in the old style Right Half position.

In fact yesterday we didn’t seem to have a specialist holder, all the midfield seemed to get back and defend when required and get up and attack... as it should be!

When Cahill went off, Neville went on and that allowed Fellaini to push up more and, after 5 or 6 games had a bit of form and confidence, he made things happen.
