Senderos on loan

Comments (42)

I don't necessarily like starting rumours like this... but a mate of mine (I know, I know) is a secretary at Goodison Park and ocassionaly gets the skinny on transfers (he was the first to tell me about Distin and Bilyaletdinov before it hit the news) and he told me this afternoon that we are working towards getting a deal sorted with Arsenal for the six month loan of Phillipe Senderos with a set "compensation" fee (I believe his contract runs out at the end of thet season) if we are interested in signing him permenantly. I'd be interested to know what other ToffeeWebers think about this.

Defender... Loan... fits the expected MO to a T; has to be a definite possibility.

How many games has he started / got subbed into this season? Will he need months of slow and gradual introduction until he is accustomed to the pace and ferocity of the Premier League? Will he be able to make the 200-mile transition from the Big CIty Lights of London to the blissful tranquility of Life in a Northern Town? How will his WAG cope with those nosey neighbors up north? Will he need to wear those pansy gloves every match when there's a nip in the air? Can he speak English?

So many questions, so few answers!

I’ve been assured by an Arsenal fan that Senderos has a touch of the Joesph Yobo’s about him!! Quick, quiet in person, can put in quality tackles, but possesses the ability to have shocking moments every game.

I’m not convinced Senderos is actually going to improve the starting 11. But BK has fuck all cash for Moyes, so what choice does Moyes have to get in cover for the rest of the season???

Gotta be better than playing Hibbo, Neil or Duffy there. He does seem to be renound for high profile blunders but to be fair its normaly in big games against the best teams and best players like Drogba, but who hasn’t struggled against Drogba?

Seems like a recipe for a Glen Keeley moment to me.

If Senderos can't get a game with Arsenal’s back 4 problems, he must be bad.

Jay Harris,

What back 4 problems at Arsenal are you referring to? They’ve had the same CB partnership virtually all year.

I tend to take these ’I know a person in the club’ rumours with a huge pinch of salt; ever since I was assured 30 years ago by a person who ’worked for Sir John Moores’ that Glen Hoddle was about to sign on the dotted line ’Within the next 24 hours"

But Senderos - I really hope not... he’s really pedestrian, is dodgy in the air for such a big fella and has been turned over more times than my telly when Corry is on...

Anyway... we urgently need cover up front - Jo is about to be rusticated, Vaughan is accident prone, Yak won’t be around until Feb, Saha is broke again and so is Cahill, Anichebe still weeks way, Donovan an unknown quantity and won’t be match fit for at least a fortnight...

Oh great... just what we need — another fecking defender!! How about a pacy winger, Davey Moyes, we have only been crying out for this over the last 8 fecking years!!! I don’t care who we get in as long as they have pace, we must have the slowest team in the Premier League!!

Oh Ian, anymore rumours, mate? No matter how many times I get fecked over by Everton in the transfer windows, I just keep coming back more!! More fool me! :-)

Whilst on the one hand, I agree we could do with cover, it will take too long for a new defender to bed in. So a no for me. Think we need more attacking options.

Yobo and Distan haven't been in the best of form so I think a bit more competition will be good, he's still quite young as well and has a few more years till he peaks, he could come good.

I stand by what I said.

Arsenal with 21 against in the league have more against than Utd, Chelsea, Villa, Birmingham and Fulham.

Vermaelan has been a find for them but I don't rate Gallas that highly and there’s no strength in depth to cover those two.

In addition, they’ve had Clichy, Sagna and Gibbs all injured this season and still did not want to find room for Senderos.

Senderos is shite, if he wasn’t he would be playing elsewhere already, but he fits the DM requirement to the letter — the magical "D-E-F-E-N-D-E-R" — just what we need when we can barely buy a fucking goal.

Does anybody genuinely believe we DON’T need a defender?

I know many of you like to take every opportunity to knock Moyes and his emphasis on defence, but we quite patently need a defender right now. With Yobo and Jagielka out, signing Senderos on loan would not be a bad move.

We dont need him anyway — Heitinga, Neill, Distin, Yobo, Jagielka... with Duffy, Neville and Rodwell as back-up centre-halves. I suspect with a fully fit squad, Heitinga and Jagielka would be the first-choice centre-backs. The only time we would need Senderos would maybe be for Jan & Feb until Yobo and Jags are back.

Sean: about a pacy winger, Davey Moyes, we have only been crying out for this over the last 8 fecking years!!!

That is what Donovan is.

And defenders, CBs: Jagielka injured; Yobo away AND injured; Distin injured; Duffy, inexperienced.

So, we obviously don’t need a defender FFS.

I want a defender and a striker. Jo, Bye!

Paul Foster, we have a decent centre half catching splinters he’s called Duffy and would cost us nothing, unlike Senderos, who would cost us additional wages and, given his habit of cock-ups, possibly games too. You win games by scoring goals not keeping clean sheets. How many defenders do we need at the club? Christ, even the midfielders we ever get linked to are talked about as defensive midfielders.

I wouldn’t mind that Tom. Because of the embargo put on Pompey, it looks like he has to go back to Spurs when the loan deal is up, and because we aren’t rivals to Spurs for a top 6 spot, I reckon they would loan him out to us.

No way will we sign O’Hara...

My reasoning?

As soon as we bid for him, ’Appy ’Arry will come in and gazump us with a higher offer (as he always does).

He will then realise that his club already owns O’Hara, so he will accept his own offer and then promptly put him in the Spurs 8th team where the lad’s career will grind to a halt.

SIGH.

As for Senderos, I can’t see this being a bad move, cos we are horrifically short of centre backs. Jagielka won’t be the same player till next season at the earliest (same with Arteta unfortunately) and Yobo and Distin are both injured/away/shite (delete as appropriate — though with Yobo all 3 probably apply at present).

Heitinga and Neill are doing well enough at the current time, but if one gets injured, I would rather be able to rely on Senderos than a 5-foot tall average right-back playing out of position or a 17-year-old that, though having made a couple of promising appearances against some absolute tosh in Europe, is yet to have made his Premier League debut.

Michael;

Happy New Year to you. I can offer some assistance on this one.

Q: How many games has he started / got subbed into this season?
A: 2 starts and 2 substitution appearances

Q: Will he need months of slow and gradual introduction until he is accustomed to the pace and ferocity of the Premier League?
A: No. He has made 64 appearances for Arsenal.

Q: Will he be able to make the 200-mile transition from the Big CIty Lights of London to the blissful tranquility of Life in a Northern Town?
A: Yes. Cockney Phil will adapt just fine.

Q: How will his WAG cope with those nosey neighbors up north?
A: She will be fine. I can take her out on the town and you are welcome to join us. I don’t think it is any noisier up here anyway is it?

Q: Will he need to wear those pansy gloves every match when there’s a nip in the air?
A: Yes.

Q: Can he speak English?
A: English is one of the six languages he speaks.

A mate of mine is a Gooner, and he reckons it’d be a good signing — he was class at times for Arsenal but does have a tendency to have the odd ’Yobo moment’ so basically he’d fit in perfectly at Everton.

Oh and Michael — he speaks 6 languages, English, French, Spanish, German, Italian and Portugese.

So there.

We certainly need some fit defenders and, with Yobo, Distin and Hibbert all having hamstring and groin strains, when they will be able to return and perform at 100% is very much open to question.

Therefore, I don’t see Senderos as a bad move, especially as Jagielka's return still seems a while away.

There are not that many vailable options around at centre-back just now. Just look at Man Utd, it’s currently their Achilles heel, but just who will they be able to sign?

We have got a bit of pace in Donovan for a while now, so maybe Davie can pick up a forward or central midfielder who has lost their way, just like he did with Arteta in January 2005.

We need cover desperately. Senderos is a proven defender. Okay, he is out of favor at Arsenal but a loan deal is good. He makes mistakes... name any defender who doesn’t including Ferdinand, Carragher and the likes. There won’t be any others out there to pick from at this stage of the season and obviously our youngsters are not ready.

Dave Roberts, don’t think I ever said Anelka played for the Super Eagles... the issue was the meaning of Yak’s flappy arms in goal celebration, and I offered "Super Eagles?" as a possible explanation in his case.

As for Anelka, it seemed the explanation could be anything from butterflies to a supposedly Islamic construct of birds flying as prayers to God. He’s French, you know.

OFF-Topic - From one thing to another. There aren’t really no fitting thread for this important message of mine, but I really want you to know that in the latest (third) Wrong Turn-movie; "Left for dead", one of the hillbilly-mutants (who I think is in the second movie too), is probably a clone of Mike Riley. Me, I’d take him; would be good cover for Yobo and until Jagielka comes back. Moyes is a very good man-manager so no doubt he would get the best out of him if he plays. Just wouldn’t mind a striker and a creative midfielder with him though.

Senderos: on the real positive upside, I remember him coming into the Arsenal side at a very very tender age, can anyone shed light on his exact age? Through injury etc he was given his opportunity and for about 12-18 months was top top class. He was advanced way beyond his years; in a similar way Wenger promoted his young current captain way ahead of expectation.

I distinctly remember Football Focus doing an editorial special on him and what a big impact on the whole team and Arsenal's season.

At the time, he did not make any of the clangers talked about and his confidence was sky high. It was at a time when there were really top class defenders at Arsenal he could emulate and learn from.

Perhaps, just perhaps he can now come into the traditionally best years of a CB with class defenders training him and guiding him. Moyes, Jags and Big Nose could catapult him back to being a high-class top-of-the-Prem and Eureopean-level perfromer at CB.

I truly hope he does sign and we get the biggest upside possible on this talented but fallen and fragile young CB. This would be a loan to have a look and keep him highly motivated, not shelling out ÂŁ10mill.
