Piquionne rumour

Comments (23)

I know this is a rumour which happened a few days ago, and may not be true, but it's an interesting one... firstly, because it says he replaces Jo; and secondly, because it is almost the same as when we got Manny Fernandes the first time.

Is he a good replacement for Jo? I think so... certainally fits into the Moyes persona with working your ass off on the pitch, and looked promising in November and December when he scored a few goals, especially the one against Liverpool!

I do hope this one is pulled off, it would be a good move.

Can we actually get rid of Jo?

Thought the deal was a full ’season’.

If City are still paying his wages then do they really care if he trains with us or them?

As for Pinocchio, got to admit I haven't seen anything of him so can't say whether he’s a good player or not.

I often wonder why we don't uncover a Ricardo Fuller as this lad is a real centre forward with bags of strength and ability... how he ended up at Stoke, I will never know. When was the last time we found someone of his ability without spending lots of money?

I haven’t seen enough of Pinnochio to pass judgement, but he must be better than Jo. Any team with aspirations needs two good players for every position and one or two extra special ones.

The stance Moyes is taking on Jo is an odd one. Sure, gross misconduct sends him back to City, but as we apparently have nothing to lose — wages paid — by keeping him, where’s the logic?

DM has cited the need for discipline. That doesn’t seem to be falling apart, and sending Jo back would have no effect on, for example, Pienaar’s negotiations. Old pros like Heitinga and Neill are holding the centre, and I would guess, the dressing room. It's solid, and even sometimes, creative, in there.

So, again, why is one of the most disciplined ever squads in any club being reminded to be professional?

I would guess that Moyes likes Jo. He has eventually made up his mind that he can do no more for us and is sending him back — for his own good.... City will immediately send him somewhere else — Russia? — and the lad gets another chance at a career.

Then again, he might be playing against Arsenal...

Trevor, I think the problem with getting a Ricardo Fuller is that it will make us play hoofball even more than we do. As you said, he can hold the ball up and battle, and you can see Neill or Hibbert getting the ball and looking for Fuller.

ps - Piquionne may or not be any good, may or may not ever play for us.

Pinocchio, as I recall Evertonians referring to an RS player in the 70s, seems to me to be more difficult to spell than Piquionne.

Why the extra effort?

Looks average.

Goal record in France is not exactly fantastic, reaching double figures just once, not young either.

Lyon obviously don't want him and he has hardly set the Premier League alight... 3 goals all season.

Maybe I’m wrong, and when on the loan market your hands are tied somewhat.

How about Beckford from Leeds? Sort out a loan deal; if he flops, Leeds will happily take him back... if not, they get £3-4million. We could give them Agard/Baxter on loan so they are sorted out for the season.

Or in our search for a decent Brazilian we should punt for Kerrison. He's on loan from Barcelona at Benfica but is way down the pecking order. I was in Brazil last year and came back raving about this guy, my club there is Palmeiras. He signed for Barca but was loaned out immediately, surely they are unhappy at him not playing as much as he is, yet we saw the quality of Cardozo and Saviola first hand so can understand why.

I usually hate this FM malarkey, but it's late, I’m snowed in and rather bored.

Apologies if I am way off here but I thought that the terms of any loan deal would mean that the club taking the player on loan would take over the responsibility of paying that player’s wages (or a percentage agreed with the player’s club — who would pay the rest) for the duration of the loan.

If so then, there is an argument for getting Jo off the club’s wage bill (must be at least £30,000 a week) and freeing up those wages for another player.

I don't know about the rest of you but I'm fed up of all these "work your bollocks off" players we buy... can we not buy a player that actually doesn't need to run round like a headless cicken to make an impression?

I wish we had signed Jay Jay Okocha, he left for somewhere like Saudi from Bolton at a youngish age (about 28). I'll never forget the skill he possessed and when he outshone Ortega in the World Cup. He would have been a Moyes player in terms of cost, but not a Moyes player in terms of ability (ie, not in the Moyes mould).

Andrew — Everton negotiated that City pay his wages as part of the Lescott deal.

Charlie — we did: Bilyaletdinov. And most Everton fans call him lazy. Talk about a lose lose situation!

Trevor — are you taking the piss about Fuller?

Keith — perhaps it’s to do with the other players. Think about it, if there’s a slacker in your office, he/she is probably gonna piss you off (unless you’re the slacker!). Perhaps Nev/Cahill have had a word with Moyes to say Jo’s antics haven’t gone down well with the squad.

As for Piquionne, I think we have 5 better forwards at the club.

Fran, average? Well, average is better than Jo. In fact, Jo is actually a Portuguese word for utterly worthless so I’ll gladly exchange that for average.

I wouldn’t be thrilled with Piquionne but what do we have to lose? What if he turns out to be a solid player? I’m not advocating a move for him but if we go out and get him, I don’t see a problem.

Charlie: Jay Jay left Bolton for Qatar when he was 33, but don’t let that stand in the way of you making your point. Jay Jay in his mid-20s would have been worth having, but I’m not sure Moyes would ever have taken a player like that. He prefers a player like Arteta or Fernandes who can supply skill but also run all day and tackle at times.

In truth do we need another forward?? I am more than happy with Donovan, Saha, Vaughan and Agard for now... Not mouthwatering, but sufficient until...

Agree... but Moyes most creative signings have come from loans — Pienaar, Arteta and Fernandes — Iet’s hope he can do it again.

Did Piquionne not play as a wide man at the start of the season? (Which may account for his poor goals ratio this season...) I seem to remember being impressed with his ability to take men on out wide and crossed numerous balls in to the men in the middle who were incompetent.

I think he was helping create chances when Portsmouth were being complemented for there excellent play but lack of luck in front of goal earlier in the season.

Admittedly since he has seemed to be moved in-field, his strike rate still hasn’t seemed to have been red hot.

To Clarify, Moyes’s loans go back as far as his first ever signing for us: Yobo — although, to be fair it was a WS loan deal DM completed the transfer on. Yobo was signed for between £1m & £5m in July 2002 after Davey had joined us in March of that year.

Perhaps that is what set loans in his mind as being a great way to see a player’s potential (or not, as the case may be) as since then there have been Brian McBride, (let’s leap over Franny Jeffers shall we?), Mikel Arteta, Matteo Ferrari, Sander Westerveld, Tim Howard, Manuel Fernandes (twice), Stephen Pienaar, Thomas Gravesen, Anthony Gardner, Segundo Castillo, Jo (twice) and now Landon Donovan, with the likelihood of more to come.

It seems to me sensible as some of the above weren’t great but were probably there as emergency backup needed at the time (see Anthony Gardner for example).

If only he had done a loan deal for Per Krøldrup as I never quite understood that little bit of business. That is still a very small blot on an otherwise surprisingly impressive transfer history IMHO, given the funds available, gems unearthed, profits made on moving players on, etc.

Stewart - we go into uncharted territory there of course, but Moyes would certainly talk to/listen to his senior players. Even so, it seems a bit severe. DM, under it all, is a softie. I still think he’s trying to do the lad a favour.

Sorry to change the thread a bit here, guys, but does anyone know what has happened with Saha’s contract?

He is free to talk to other clubs isn’t he?

If he committed to leaving us it may set a precedent — that worries me more than whether or not we get Piquionne?

Alasdair - I know nothing, but what kind of contract is Saha going to be able to negotiate with another club? What kind of appearance / medical clauses would be written into it?

Sure, he’s a superb player - considerably better now than I recall when AF declared that he had to buy him from Fulham - but only if he is rationed out. And on the honour scale, in which Barmby sets the zero level, I guess that Saha gets up to 7 or 8.

How would you rate Pienaar on this scale?

Keith - I agree that Saha seems an honourable bloke and seems to have enjoyed his time at Everton, but Everton made it clear they wanted to give him a new/extended contract a couple of months ago and still nothing is signed.

This morning we are linked with McCarthy. Maybe Moyes is anticipating that he will only have Saha until the summer and he is trying to ge a replacement bedded in now so he is firing in time for next season’s big kick off. Personally, I would love to see Saha stay for at least another season. His touch is class and he has produced goals from nothing, which is invaluable. Also, we turned down £8million last summer, so to lose him for nothing 12 months later would be frustrating.

Pienaar is an outstanding player and I think he is happy at Everton. I don’t think he will go to another Europa club in favour of staying with us, but he is keeping his cards close to his chest in terms of a new contract because he is about to be the key player for the host nation in a World Cup. There is no better stage to prove yourself on then that.

If a "super club" like Real, Barca, Juve or Milan come in or even a club playing in a top league that can pretty much guarantee Champs League football for him, I think he will go.
