Beckford

Comments (33)

Just read Beckford has handed in a transfer request and Newcastle have put a bid in for £1.5M.

Now I don't think the lad is top notch but I do think he could do a job for us. I watched him play against Man Utd and he was a pain in the arse to them, took the piss out of Orange Brown and scored the winning goal, quite a decent goal as well.

If we go in, the price will jump to £5M or something but he's still cheap, he's fast, he knows where the goal is, and he plays with a bit of fire in his belly. I'd like to see him on the bench behind Saha, I know he's a bit like Vaughan but Vaughan's always going to be injured.

Er.. FM warning... Strictly, not linked to us, so... blah, blah.

But, since there seems to be absolutely nothing going on out there...

Have at it!

What about Brad Fullerton from Exeter? We were linked with him a while back and apparently he’s super quick, young and full or promise.

And if we are to sign a "young, up-and-coming" striker, I would prefer Maxime Lestienne, the 17-year-old from Belgium.

Wilson, 34 goals last season 14 in 23 so far this season, that's not bad... Like I said, he’s not top notch but I’d rather see him than Benni McCarthy in our colours and they’d probably cost the same, but Beckford would have a sell-on value.

I thought Lestienne was a midfielder? And besides that, we really need someone now rather than for the future.

Iain, sorry, my bad. Lestienne is a midfielder and a winger, which makes the possibility of him coming to us... zero. I'd agree we need someone now rather than for the future, hence Beckford isn’t the solution either.

I know a lot of Leeds fans and the majority say that Beckford will miss 5 decent chances before he bags 1. He did put his chance away against Man U, but remember that his first touch was rubbish, and a decent goalkeeper for united would have seen that, stayed at his near post, and let Brown deal with it.

We don't create enough chances for a striker like Beckford. We need another striker like Yak or Saha with the class to put their few chances away or create chances themselves.

I know Manny Fernades is not a striker but has anyone heard anything more on his 3rd loan spell? And, if so, would he be cup-tied for the Europa League?

Dan - thanks for ’ let Brown deal with it’. He couldn’t deal himself a card from the top of the pack. Best laugh I’ll probably have all day.

Fuck that - if Nyuh’cassell are offering £1.5m, offer £2m.

(We can SELL him for five.... in the summer).

Jermaine Beckford has scored a few goals in League One but there’s a reason no top side has so far tried to purchase him. He looks like he could be a useful squad player but probably no better then Vaughan, Anichebe or Agard.

In fact, if we need a young striker, then I would like to see Lukas Jutkiewicz returned and given a chance. Beckford has found his level in the lower leagues, leave him there and look after our own like Lukas Jutkiewicz.

Iain it doesn’t matter who we sign to play up front as long as the style of play continues as it is. Lumping high balls into the box, as against Carlisle, or the usual tactic of a slow build up then playing every single attack out wide for a cross are unimaginative and the main reason for our lack of goal scoring prowess.

Beckford is a good striker at the level he is at. Unproven at a higher level so not sure about him. Can't see him being better than any we have at the mo, also he is 26 so while not at his peak he certainly isn't a "young player".

He also has that selfish streak Defoe has of always shooting if given half a chance rather than passing to a better placed team mate. Thats fine if you are Jermaine Defoe and have the talent to score at Prem and International level, but Jermaine Defoe he ain't!

I would go fo McCarthy as he is at least proven at the top level.

It would probably take McCarthy the rest of this season and next pre-season to actually get fit. Have you seen the size of him?

McCarthy had one good season a few years back, but as soon as the papers said Chelsea were interested, that was it. His head has been down ever since.

I am not sure Beckford has a good enough first touch for the Prem. Last season, Delph was their stand-out player and he is nowhere near ready for the Prem at Villa. Beckford will end up not getting near our side and loaned out next season to a Championship club for experience. I don’t think we have even £2mill to spend on someone for 2011-12 season now!

We have to face the fact that the Blues will not be forking out any money during the transfer window. With Vaughan, Yaks and Saha available then McCarthy seems the only player to arrive as a loan deal as cover for the injury prone strikers we have.
Don’t forget that Donovan also scores goals although untested in the Prem. Beckford has credentials but is not DM’s style.

He’s done really well at Leeds, but even at £2m he’d be too much of a gamble for us given our financial state.

Saying that, Cahill came from Millwall, Lescott from Wolves... It all comes down to whether Moyes sees something in him and, being honest, nothing has indicated he has.

I’ll be very surprised if we pay a transfer fee for a striker this month.

The chap I mentioned the other day Mesut Ozil, only cost Werder Bremen about 5m euros but regularly player of the week in Germany, scored a cracker against Engerland U21s and now plays for German national side and will be worth a whole lot more after the World Cup if he plays like he has done this season in the Bundesliga.

Ozil is already out of our league I’m afraid. The whole of Europe had scouts at the U-21 tournament and he was widely considered the best player in it.

I don’t know much about Beckford but it's got to be better than spending actual money on a player who can’t get in the Blackburn team.

Sign Lestienne (for free) and get Fernandes on loan. Zaragoza are trying to get rid of Pennant (for financial reasons) and he’s actaully done quite well for them.

I’ve never heard of him slotting in at right back or being able to play in several positions so definitely won’t be on Moyes’s radar.

Mike, it makes me wonder if Everton ever bother their arse to scout the U21s, I like watching them myself and remember a certain Petr Cech having a blinder in them too.

Good shout about Mesut Ozil. Sadly, I think Mike is right; the boat has passed on that one. Too much interest now and I think he would command a sizable fee. Certainly the kind of player we should be looking at though.

Pedersen is out of contract in the summer, so £2million is a lot to spend on him if we can get him for nothing in the summer.

He actually hasn’t played well for Blackburn for 18 months and hasn’t been offered a new contract.

I am not sure. Maybe Moyes can get the best out of him. How old is he?

Perhaps being clouded by seeing him score some cracking goals. I’m not sure Big Sam is the manger to get the best out of him! In fact I’m sure he is not! Worth a punt if the money is there. Man Utd were very keen before he went to Blackburn.

There are some bargains about at the moment. Pandev went on a free transfer which is excellent business.

Pedersen is 28... not that old for a winger; to be fair, would you play well for a donkey of a manager like balloon head? Don’t forget the same prick that was laughing at the geordie scum match where Arteta got crippled — watch the replay and their player pushing down on his knee as he goes down. Rodwell injured for the next game — again shithouse tackle and Anichebe crippled — less said about how that RS Nolan wasn’t arrested for assualt the better.

With all the teams getting twitchy about money, I think thee will be a lot of loan moves rather than sales, hopefully DM will have started the ball rolling in December rather than January and the usual lastminute.com. Donovan was a good sign of something being done early.

I have a friend who supports Blackburn and, due to him, I think of Pedersen as the typical player that doesn’t do the job overall but scores some spectacular goals now and then and therefore looks like a class act for us who only see him on MotD. I think he is over-rated and we shouldn’t waste money or time on him...

I read Ledley needs a hip op, but can’t be anywhere near £6m to get him, he could sign pre-contract and just get him for nothing in summer or make a much smaller offer now, he’s not very quick for a 22-year-old though.
