3 reasons to be very happy

Comments (9)

While some of us are no doubt slightly miffed at not sealing 3 points this morning, I’ve had time to reflect and read two top quality articles which make me laugh out loud. So the three reasons we should be happy going into second half of the season, in my opinion are:-

1. The two-all draw at Arsenal. We all witnessed a rousing team performance yesterday away at Arsenal, a team themselves in great form — the Sky Sports commentator said Everton have only won 4 away points at Arsenal in the Premier League!!! Yet, Arsene Wenger thought his team were fortunate to get a 2 – 2 draw and not a 3 – 1 loss.

I for one was pleased to see that we didn’t roll out the team bus and sit 11 players behind the ball. We are turning things around on the pitch, Captain Pip lead the boys well. Landon looks like he might add a bit while he is with us, and I thought our bench looked pretty good. Bily, Vaughan, Duffy, Coleman, Baxter, Mustafi – full of promise.

2. The fat waiter has admitted his pot of cash has gone and now he cannot stop his two stars being sold. They have no money... in fact they have less than no money, they owe big money and they will need to sell their star players to service the debt the owners have loving taken out on the club. They might also sell Gerrard and Torres to get their massive wages off the books.

I’m sure every Everton fan would have loved DM to sign £25 / £30m players, but that isn’t going to happen and clearly spending beyond your means reaps one outcome. Let’s hope this is the beginning of a Pompey-style slide down the league. One thing that is assured they won’t be able to spend in Jan to help them try to push for 4th... hahaha. 3. The Liverpool owners are now insulting the fans. Brilliant – I doubt even the useless BK would stoop this low. Personally, the reaction suggests two things: the owners are under a lot of pressure and the reaction was possibly the first sign that the release valve is about to blow open; and secondly, they probably don’t understand how passionate the fans are about the ‘business’ they own and the owners will make business decisions based on business outcomes... e.g. sell to service the debt.

So, in summary, we have had our problems this season which have been outlined and double underscored on the website, but I can see three very good reasons why we should be happy. Liverpool are on the way out, possibly on and off the pitch, while we are looking like a Premier League side on the pitch and DM has said he would like to get two more players.

Come on you blues – and Happy New Year to you all.

Nice news regarding Liverpool, if true... but it could just be Sunday speculation, like their imminent demise earlier in the season, only to see them rescued by the banks.

I don't particularly like to see threads devoted to them, but I'll make a rare exception in this case. I'd save my mirth, however, until we have something tangible to be gleeful about. At the moment, they look like finishing the season above us, as they have done for all but one of the last... who the fuck knows how many seasons. I get no happiness from that, sad to say.

Oh, and let's keep the Arsenal match comments on the other threads, thanks.

My three reasons to be happy:
1/ Better and better performances on the pitch
2/ Donovan and Pip back playing
3/ The other injured players coming back soon.
Dont give a flying fuck about Liverpool , until a] We beat them
b] we’re ahead of them

Ian, it is spelt Schadenfreunde.

a german word meaning taking delight at the misfortunes of your enemies.

At the risk of getting abuse — I presume you do not live on Merseyside. Because going in to work and winding up their supporter (singluar not plural!) is one of the joys in life. Now OK, you say, you are more likely to find their supporters if you DON'T live on Mersayside, but the good things about your 3 are that they have less comeback.

Things like Carrigher wanting to take his kid to see him play at Wembley — hopefully never! Dreaming of the day that they play Tranmere in the league after doing a Leeds. Of the dream ticket going bust in Dubai after the previous dream ticket has a son with less class than their manager — and that is a tough ask.

Oh I never felt more like singing the Blues when Everton win and Liverpool lose.....

Phil... "Ian, it is spelt Schadenfreunde."

Okay... 1) It’s not. Although I kinda liked that as a variant if the meaning is changed to something like "taking delight at the misfortunes of your friends" — rather than your enemies (freunde = friend in German). I believe it’s actually spelt Schadenfreude.

2) Unless mistaken, it’s Iain, not Ian.

I for one am glad you’ve allowed this post Michael. Every sports fan needs their "anti-team"; their mortal enemy. Hoping for those arrogant bastards who spend what they don’t have, then string the banks along who have obviously decided to dance with the devil (LFC), dive down the table is almost as intriguing and enjoyable a thought as Everton finishing top 4.

And it might happen. If the Red Dicks don’t finish top 4, they will most definately have to sell. That happens and they will clearly lack firepower and could conceivably plummet down the table. They fully deserve it. They’ve written hot checks for years. They’ve thumbed their nose at Everton for how long?

All things are cyclical. It’s their time to pay the piper. I for one would enjoy watching their demise. If they are outside the top 4 at season’s end, they will go into turmoil. They are really not very good at all currently. I think it’s much more likely than some think that we may be witnessing the demise of a once great and proud football club. The financial precipice they teeter on is very real, and very likely they will fall in the next year or two. Let them fall hard!

Everyone needs their "anti-team".... Imagine Everton righting the ship, challenging for Champions League spots while Liverpool wallows bottom table in a relegation battle. That would be heaven.

Maybe we’ll thank God we were fiscally responsible while the "others" spent like drunken sailors and borrowed beyond their means. Probably not too healthy for the human spirit to hope for the demise of others.... but I can’t help myself.

Jamie, that is exactly the point I was making. Let us enjoy what is happening.

The Times are covering one of the stories today — adding that none of the money raised from selling players will be reinvested... Where have we seen this before? Rysdale @ Leeds; Gaydamak @ Portsmouth. Perhaps I’m jumping the gun a bit, but to be honest these are pretty daming stories.

Phil, I love the banter between supporters of the Blue and red sides of merseyside but I am more interested in how we are doing than Liverpool. What gets on my tits is when I try to talk football with a red and all they can go on about is trying to put us down.

The article above says 3 reasons then gives 1 footballing reason and 2 Liverpool put downs, usually when that happens in sober conversations I walk away, drunken ones are totally different.
Oh and no, I don't live on Merseyside now but I do travel into the City daily to work. Does that make a difference? And why do you think I would abuse you? As I said before, I would simply walk away.

Thomas, BK has been insulting the Everton fans for years and been getting away with it to boot.

Have to agree with Iain that I take more happiness from our recent performances, and a positive outlook for 2010 than anything to do with the RS. At the end of the day, they’re 10 points ahead of us in the league, and despite their obvious financial problems, have just signed an Argentine international midfielder for £1.5m. Have to agree though that they’ll be in dire straits should they not finish top 4, Standard Chartered Bank would be kicking themselves then wouldn’t they.
