Envy

Comments (22)

The money that clubs like Chelsea, Liverpool and Man City have to throw around doesn't really bother me anymore. With the City game coming up on Saturday, though, I have to say that I am very envious of the fact that they can afford a player like Tevez.

A lot of big money gets spent on big name players who never really meet expectations, but this guy has obviously been the real deal for several seasons now. He kept West Ham up on his own, made a huge difference at Utd and has literally carried City on his own this season.

City fans must have been wetting themselves in anticipation over the summer transfer window when they were signing him and for once, just for once, I would love to be able to have that with a player we are signing. Don't get me wrong, some of Moyes's signings have been inspired, but to know that you are getting a world class player in his prime must be amazing.

Still, a fan can dream!

Mikel Arteta will be back soon... he’s a world class player and will be like a new signing!

I was excited on the Arteta signing even though I didn’t know him that well, I just knew he had flair and passing ability.

With Moyes signings, they’re either unknown quantities or reserves, ie Howard, Neville etc.
So the one player that does come to mind who fits your bill would unfortuantly be Andy Johnson... always knew he’d be pants haha.

Just wait till Summer when the club can sign either Fernendez of Mourtinho... cough.

I think Heitinga will be a great with Everton. Apart from Arteta, we already have a world class player in Pienaar.

Colin is quite right. Pienaar is up with the best for me. Same can be said of Saha and Arteta when in fitness and in form. We also had the talents of Rooney once. Another world class player. Tevez would have been a dream signing for Moyes though.

But have you noticed, Kieran, that the big boys aren’t chucking their money around like they did a few seasons ago. When you look at the Sky 4, all of them need replacements and with the exception of the RS (and that’s for a 2.5 mill player) none of them have been active in the January window, even though there is still a couple of weeks to go. It could herald a new austerity, or maybe they are waiting for the summer. But I agree, Tevez would have been a great signing.

I think you’re right, Nick - Yakubu is the only player Moyes has signed where any real excitement has been genrated by the mere anticipation of him playing for us.

I think most of you are missing the point...

Imagine the scene: This summer (it’s still snowing), Tony Marsh wins `250 million on the Euro millions, gives Bill back his £8 mill and a couple of extra mill for ...er....keepin things ticking over.

He puts £150 million down for the regeneration of Goodison (not because that’s how much it will cost — but because that’s how much he loves it)... he puts £50 mill into developing the Everton brand..

And the remaining 35 million we spend on one player... one player...

He’s the greatest midfield prospect since sliced bread... a young flair player who can get stuck in and win matches on his own.. and Everton buy... Kickio McBalleo.

Doesn’t that just get the juices flowing!

Tony Marsh would also need to get a new manager, I don’t think he is a fan of David Moyes.

As for Kickio, I heard he was the love child of Brazil’s own Pelé, so must be good ;)

Here is another thought. Tony Marsh might put Richard Dodd on the Board of Directors.

Hahaha...

You don’t write the Official Site just after the usual summer of transfer inactivity do you?

Fully fit, I would rather have Saha. There is a reason Ferguson dropped him. He is not in the same league as Rooney or Ronaldho when he was at United. It was the latter who carried the Mancs. Tevez was just another player.

I think the idea of the big signing, particularly the goal scoring hero, takes us back decades, to someone like Gary Lineker. The monopoly money dished out down the Kingski Road and at MiddleEastlands has allowed these clubs to pay inflated fees — and more importantly, inflated wages — all over the field. And way beyond it — they have massive squads.

Speaking of Chelsea and City — why have the West London multi-millionaires taken City to tribunal over Daniel Sturridge? They put the young lad on £60,000 per week for four years. (Stop... breathe... stop again... breathe — what!!!!???) And now seem to be worried about it. About fucking time too.

The best buy in very recent memory was Kev Campbell — SuperKev who seemed to have rescued us in a few games. And I’ll gladly go along with Our Lovely Yak as a good big money buy. Also agree with Bily and — without hindsight — The Big Fella. Who, incidentally, I would rather have in my team than Tevez any day.

Your own team has players who were worth signing. That’s an aside. You contradict yourself in paragraph 1; If the money doesn’t bother you, why are you envious City can afford a player like Tevez. There is a dichotomy there which you can interpret for yourself.

Talking about big clubs spending big money, there are some things that I don’t understand. As the Sky 4 teams have been regulars in the Champions League, some of them even as winners. They win the league, the cups, yes they have won everything that can be won the last decades.

Still we can read in the papers that they are £millions in debt and there is talk about Man Utd being forced to maybe sell both Old Trafford AND Wayne Rooney, just to stabilise the economy. Liverpool is said to have to qualify for CL if they are to have any money at all to spend. Now, the questions are: How on earth can they be in any financial problems at all considering their success?

The second question is: How in hell can these teams still be making big money record-breaking transfers every now and then, considering all these BIG debts everyone is talking about.

And the last question is: If it is that easy to still buy these top players anyway. Why is it so damn impossible for us to to it?

Mike, what I mean is that I have gotten used to us having to make do with small amounts of money compared with what the big clubs have to throw about the place. It’s a simple matter of fact that I have gotten used to.

I don’t like us being broke, I don’t think any Everton fan does. My point is that it would be nice to have some of that kind of cash to spend on a really world class player.

Don’t get me wrong, he’s not terrible, and I would certainly have him in the squad if offered. However, I think world class is a little stretching it. His work rate is the one thing that I like about him, but without this, he would be decidedly average. He has about 60 goals from over 150 games in England (to put into context, Cahill has 50 from less than 200 with us), and less than 10 for Argentina in over 50 caps.

I can’t say I share the same envy. Paying the transfer fee doesn’t overly concern me - it’s the agents’ payments (probably around 5-10% of any deal), and then wages and signing on fees. Tevez is reportedly paid over 100k per week - that’s 100,000 pounds (nearly 4 times my annual salary) for a 40% chance of a goal. No ta. Alan Kirwin (I think) wrote a great comment on an article (can’t remember which one sorry) talking about this, and he was spot on word for word.

Kevin - to part answer your question, that’s over £5m a year for one player’s wages. I would hazard a guess that Man U & Chelsea have maybe 10 players ’earning’ this kind of silly money, Liverpool maybe 5 to 8. It’s quite simply unsustainable long term. It’s perhaps a reason why you don’t see Arsenal linked with the same kinds of stories, as they have a structure of sorts in place.

I personally take much more pleasure of out seeing a bargain buy turn into a very good player, and we’ve had quite a few of those.

I agree with Stewart, bargin buy into a very good player, although it would be nice to go out and buy someone absolutely Top Drawer, who I would pick? I’m not sure... Messi? Ronaldo? I’d actually go for Drogba (I know he’s getting on) but he would fit our style of play and, in form, the guy is unplayable.
