Donovan to stay for longer?

Comments (29)

2 games and I have to say I have been suprised by Donovan. He has certainly given us some much needed creativity from the right. He has looked very assured and shown a lot of passion to boot.

I just wonder what we do in a couple of weeks. I am not saying that we should necessarily try and buy the lad, but I feel we have nothing to lose in getting the loan extended.

Ok so Pienaar can play right or Bily and we have Arteta hopefully back soon. I just do not think we can rely on Arteta this season as we have done in the past. I do not think it would be fair given the length of time he has been out.

So should we try to keep him?

Of course we should try to keep him. I’d love it if we could try to work out a permanent deal but he won’t come cheap. He’s a damn good footballer and has shown a great attitude since arriving.

But more than that, or on top of that, the marketing move would be fantastic. In a World Cup year, if we could have it be said in America each time Donovan touches the ball in the tournament that he is plying his trade at Everton it would be massive.

He will sell shirts in the USA if we could keep him. Especially if we keep playing like we did against Arsenal and City. But, it’s already been a solid signing. Just hope it can be even longer and increase the international appeal of Everton.

I thought Donovan was poor against City. I lost count of how many times his first touch let him down. When he had a chance to run at defenders he ran straight into them. With his pace all he has to do is knock it into space and run past them, but he never did.

We need somebody with his kind of pace but with more quality. He will do for now but not on a permanent basis.

Donovan gives us more options. Him, Bily, Pienaar, Fellaini, Arteta, Cahill, and Rodwell are all quality starters. If and when someone goes down, they are more easily replaceable. We don’t have to play anyone out of position to put a squad together.

Craig, a good post. Of course a lot of people on here had already written him off before he even landed. They know best...

What some people seem to forget, is Everton, and Moyes, have a reputation for making "average" players good...

Of course, for every Tim Cahill, there’s a Brett Angell!

When he plays on the wing he adds balance and creativity... a good player who has surprised me with his impact.

Chants of "USA, USA".... are slightly embarassing though.

Looks like Landon is contemplating an extension as it is. As an American I was very interested to see how well he would perform. Landon looked pretty good against Arsenal, but did seem to be a little lost in the second half of the City game.

Bear in mind he’s still getting his sharpness back, and I’m impressed with his pace, but he does need to develop some techniques or shear strength that doesn’t see him get knocked off the ball so easily. He did get outmuscled on hoof balls - all the more excuse to keep it in the deck.

I will admit many of us over here have withheld our complete devotion to him because he seemed to enjoy being the big fish in the small pond, and appeared locked into Spain, Italy or Germany if he was going to go overseas.

I also think he didn’t want to leave his wife alone in LA where she’s plying her trade as an actress. But it looks like he really wants to test himself in the PL now which is exactly what will draw American attention without question.

He could be very influential on that right side when he gets his sharpness back. Right now he’s trying to close down players, not let anyone behind him and contribute offensively when he can; he’ll be more aggressive as his fitness and comfort levels increase.

The thing is Donovan would be expensive - I would not hesitate in saying it would be an Arshavin-esque price tag. And that’s not because he’s as talented as the Russian, but it would be such a marketing hit to MLS that they would try to scare clubs away, much lie what they did to us with McBride. However, the x-factor in this (and I believe Moyes understands this) is that Donovan has orchestrated his own transfers back to MLS from Germany in the past.

He was playing for San Jose when he left for Leverkusen (he was actually on a Leverkusen contract during the 2002 World Cup, and was LOANED to Major League Soccer). Landon got homesick and wanted to come back and play for the LA Galaxy and he got his wish (more than one rumor has NIKE playing a part in getting Landon back to the USA).

The bottom line is if Donovan wants to stay longer; he’ll tell MLS that he’s staying longer and I think having him hear the crowd applaud him when he came off was a psychological tactic. Donovan does play a style that Everton fans insist in seeing in their players (the “USA” chants were brilliant) and the squad seems to have welcomed him in.

The only knock against an extension might have happened with Clint Dempsey’s knee injury yesterday that will possibly jeopardize his World Cup; Landon and his advisors may see that and decide not to risk it.

There’s no way he would stay for an extention. He put the boot into Beckham for doing the same thing with Milan last season stating he was a poor profesional, team mate and captain for doing so.
Seeing the size of his frontal lobe I doubt he’d do the same.

One big factor to consider is that MLS is facing a likely player lockout and work stoppage over contract issues. I’m not up on the legalities involved, but it makes no sense for him to return if the start of the MLS season is delayed due to labor issues.

Ciarán, I don’t know about the chants of "USA" being embarrassing, but Landon has already mentioned them in dispatches, and perhaps have played a part in him considering a longer stay. And, if they are inspiring his cracking corners, long may they continue!

This Blue Fever, it’s obviously catching.

Chants of ’USA!,’USA!’ are purely tongue in cheek and when Landon criticised Beckham he did so as he was labelled as the saviour of American ’soccer’ . He was paid $250+ million to play in America, and then after one full season he left without the promise of ever returning. He also questioned his sponsorship commitments taking precedence over his training. Don’t think he can be called hypocritical.

Peter Griffin, "Donovan was poor"... "need more quality"... "He will do for now"

This was his second game! What do you expect — perfection? Admittedly he was not as good as his first game when he was quite extraordinary but he does give all he has. Give the guy a break ffs. Do you think comments like yours will encourage him?

I agree with David Barks 100%. I wasn't expecting big things from him but he has shown some decent skill along with a fantastic attitude, sign him up! As David Barks suggested, the marketing side of things could be massive for the club which would be a nice added bonus.

Peter -"With his pace all he has to do is knock it into space and run past them, but he never did". Get real - you think it is that easy to beat prem defenders. Hopefully he will show more quality but it is a very promising start.

Peter Griffin is absolutely spot on. There were a few performances to wax lyrical about on Saturday, unfortunately Donovan's wasn't one of them. I was pleasantly surprised by Donovan's first-half performance at the Emirates and believe I saw enough to suggest he can cut it in the Prem, but steady on.

I know we have been screaming out for a right sided player for a long long time, but let's not proclaim Landon as the answer. He hasn't earned this lavish praise nor does he deserve to be saddled with unrealistic expectations.

The guy has done ok and it would be nice to think he can kick on from here but step back a little; he’s only just got here — give the guy a chance to get his kit dirty.

Just got back from a weekend trip to LA where I had the pleasure of watching the match in a pub in Pasadena. Have to say, Landon Donovan has turned a city full of Galaxy/US National fans into full fledged Everton Fans! Was a whole pub full of 'em shouting it up supporting the blues... Sign him up!

Sunshine Superman (not quite, not yet) must have a head full of twinkling stars right now. I hoped he would be a good one. Moyes was confident and put him straight in at the Emirates, and he has been fortunate in the sense that he has come into a side just beginning to play so well.

He said all the right things about being back for the new season when he signed, but I’ll bet he’s wondering if he can stay a bit longer now.

Oh, and he seems to like GP and our supporters. That helps too.

I don’t think we’ll see the best of Landon Donovan until towards the end of his loan. He’s barely played for 10 weeks and that showed at times.

He clearly has an excellent touch, and intelligence, and he’s elusive. He’s also got a great attitude. But he did run out of steam and ideas against City. There were 2 or 3 occasions when he literally did simply run straight into the defender.

But I’ve little doubt he’ll shine brighter and brighter. Just one look at the goal he scored against Brazil in the Confed Cup final shows what he’s capable of. And yes, unashamedly, it would be a sublime piece of marketing to keep the USA captain AND goalkeeper here.

I have to agree, we have yet to see the best of Landon.

He is a good quality player that will complement the squad.

World Cup year- US Captain and Goalkeeper at Everton, England playing the US. The press would be camped at Finch Farm.

Imagine the number of Everton shirts sold to US fans.
Handled correctly this could benefit the club for many years.

Sign him, sign him, sign him. As a blue living in New York, I cannot overemphasize the extent to which Donovan's cameo has put the club on the map in the United States.

The MLS will sell him for between £8 to £10M, much of that will be recouped in merchandise, tickets, support etc. Even if he only becomes a spark plug rotation player in our midfield, the PR/marketing pay-off will be worth every penny.

Not surprised he has done well at all. Anybody who saw him play in the last Confederations Cup will already have known his quality. Would be a great signing but doubt we could afford him.

I don’t think he’ll stay permanently for a myriad of reasons. Money that needs to be paid for him, his loyalty to American soccer and MLS, MLS’s desire to hold their marque player, et al.

But the kid was tossed into Premier League life against Arsenal and Man City — Not Portsmouth and Hull. And he’s performed very well.

I hope we keep him. But I’m not holding my breath.

Have a look at this post from the OS, a few typos but you get the drift.

"Joe Vala, I have never really follow an EPL team other than those that have had one of our boys playing for them and as an American, it would be a tough blow to lose Landon. He has become the face of the sport in our country and along with Tim Howard, I think you have the two best players our country has to offer right now (with the exception of maybe Clint Dempsey ... ). But I have to admit, this is the first time I am buidling an affinity for a team there. Your fans remind me of the fans of my favorite American football team, the NY Giants; hardcore supporters educated in all aspects of the game who will be there for their club no matter what, who have no real patience for whiney moneybags, and who love scrappy, hard nosed play. So if he does saty, maybe that'll give some of our younger players a chance to get the spotlight (remember the nam Stuart Holden, you'll be hearing it soon) and give a chance for a Yank to shine in the best league (and fans) in the world."

The words "first time I'm building an affinity" are intriguing. This is just one guy, but who knows how many others across the pond feel the same way. I don't think we appreciate just how big a star Landon Donovan is over there; he is massive, almost Beckham-like. At the very least the word Everton will be on the radar of millions of Yanks who had previously never heard of us.

I don't want to get too excited about this, but if Donovan builds on his promising start and we move up the league and get to the later stages of the Europa and FA cups there will be millions of Yanks cheering us on.

OK, be honest. England and USA are in the same group in the World Cup. Who will you be cheering for?

Show the world what’s it like to be a honest loyal American who loves to open his mouth. Who’s the hypocrite now? Typical. Mercenary.

Ste, Des and Aiden: exactly.

Peter: lay off, he hasn’t played in months... more importantly without really being match fit he’s made a difference.

I’ll count on the player lockout for this one. The misguided tactics of the MLS is our gain.

Got to watch the game last night eventually... and must admit I was expecting more from Donovan based on the comments... he lost the ball quite a lot, something that no-one would have forgiven Osman for.

However, he is clearly quick, and that creates all types of chaos for the opposition, as they can’t afford to leave him alone, which creates space for the likes of Pienaar and Bily. I reckon though he would be a good signing and would improve with games. Gave good balance to the side.

BTW... Bily was exceptional. Only lacked a goal. His best performance in the Blue.

The match made me breathless. I couldn’t believe how much our boys were chasing around for 90 minutes. Pienaar just kept sprinting all game. Phew!

Too many people will get carried away with the good results at Arsenal and City and this may effect their assessment of Donovan. If we sign a player, I hope he does well. Yet I honestly believe he is a useful stop gap and nothing more.

Watch the game again and look at him when he got the ball, he just ran straight into Garrido. Maybe on telly he looked decent, but from where I was sat his touch was poor. See what happens as his match fitness and confidence grow, but I wouldn’t be calling to sign him after 2 good results.

Frank, I completely agree. Although a season ticket holder, I live in London and, on the train home after the City game, I started chatting with 4 American kids.

All 18-20, love the EPL but never had a team. They each had an Everton shirt on with Donovan and 9 on the back having been the game. They loved it and were in the process of buying half-season tickets online when I left them, saying they were now blues!

Bring him in for whatever the MLS want and look to build a fanbase on it — Who knows what this can do?!

They televise all the EPL matches in the States (90%) on Fox (USA’s Sky) & Setanta. So they have a big football base and I seam to remember that 15 million households watched the Confederations Cup, which means about 45 million Americans watched Donovan score on Brazil.

There are a lot of shirts to be sold, but Man U, Fulham, Aston Villa & Chelsea have already made some decent inroads into the US market. Having Donovan on the squad will instantly make Everton the #1 US EPL team... with Fulham a close 2nd.
