I didn't really see much of the game but they were two nice goals from open play. Good football in the first half, apparently, followed by dreadful stuff in the second half. ANyone got any pearls of wisdom to share, because I certainly haven't!

How did the live forum work? looked like it might have crapped out at the end there... Post your comments, critique, praise and damnation here below...

I didn’t see the first half but the replays showed a lovely cushioned cross from Fellaini for the first goal. Donovan’s was deflected although not sure what difference that made.

The second half we looked very average. No composure or decent final balls. We were defending like grim death in the 70th minute but luckily strung some passes together and Osman, Baines and Fellaini kept things ticking over.

We need a proper striker as Saha is not a long term proposition and too many chances are being wasted.

Excellant first half performance with some pretty good passing and two decent goals.Cahill, Pienaar,Fellaini and Baines impressed me most.

Had two great chances at the start of the second half but neither Donavon or Saha could take them. Sunderland are shocking though and yet still gave us a very nervy last ten mins.

Overall a good 3 points but will need to play much better during our tricky month of fixtures in Feb. Good too see Arteta get 15 mins in the centre of the park and Anichebe even got a few mins at the end. Will settle for the same on Saturday against Wigan.

Very comfortable from start to finish. Took the foot off the gas second half - could and should have had a 3rd - but coasted the last 20mins. Sunderland were hopeless. Distin looked solid. Cahill had a good game. Pienaar central to any good football. Saha led the line well and put in a good shift but should have bagged. Things are looking up.

This is the 2nd home game that I’ve missed on the trot which is something of a record. But watching it on Sky Sports 2, we won the game in the 1st half and shut up shop in the 2nd. No real pressure but we did switch off late in the 2nd, but I thought everyone played really well with no MoM. Which is a good thing — great to see Arteta back.

Played well in the first half — two glorious opportunities missed through either brilliant defending or lazy finishing depending on your point of view.

We really should have been out of sight in terms of scoreline by 60 minutes — what actually happened is we took the foot off and never created anything.

If we’d have been playing a team with a tad more confidence, we’d have up against the wall second half.

On the whole, job done — but definitely not a job well done.

Moyes has some work to do...

Pleasing result but definitely not at our best. Some positives...
* Good to see Timmy get a goal and assist with the second. He also ran himself ragged chasing everything.
* Tim Howard pulled off some great saves in the last 10 minutes.
* Micky looked strong when he came on.
* Good to see Victor back on the pitch.
* Great to see Landon’s first goal.
Some Negatives.....
* Failed to kill off the game when given the opportunity.

Perhaps Neville gave them one of his motivational team talks at half-time. Something along the lines of "follow my example, avoid getting beyond the half-way line; if in doubt, hoof it out".

On a serious note, once more a Jekyll and Hyde performance, terrific first half then content to sit back and defend, inviting pressure on ourselves once more.

Cahill lead by example and was my MotM. I fear there’s little hope for Coleman. Neville was next to useless, offered Donovan very little, continually hitting long diagonal balls to no one. As a result, we did absolutely nothing down the right side.

Entirely predictable, as a result Sunderland adopted their game to closing us down on the left. Is Moyes ever going to learn?

My musings:

- Fella was exceptional again
- I’m rarely, if ever disappointed with Heitinga
- MK’s perennial point that we don’t go for the jugular was spot on again tonight... Sunderland were there for the taking but we sat off.
- Sunderland were atrocious — we didn’t have to play very well to beat them.
- Arteta’s not lost his skill or passing ability but it will be a couple of months yet before he’s even close to the player he was...
- Can we have some decent delivery from set pieces please?

Great win and a great 1st half display but being 2-0 up at half time is always an uncomfortable scoreline. I’m not sure what Moyes said at have time but there should have been greater urgency to get that 3rd goal and kill the game off.

Would have been nice to see Coleman come on for the last 15 mins, get down the right flank and give us a little bit more pace and help retain a little more possession.

Kill the game off? I did not see any sustained Sunderland pressure that saw them worthy of a draw, never mind a win. We were the best team today, and deserved the win. However, the need for a decent striker on the field is obvious for all to see.

Saha’s early season promise has fizzled out, he was poor tonight as he has been for the last few games. The defence were good, midfield very good, just lacking in the final third, yet won two-nil.

Sunderland were poor, but that was because our midfield did not allow them to play. Thumbs up from me.

Very good first half, took our foot off the gas on the hour and it’s always difficult to fire up again. Three points well earned. Do you really have to come on here on your armchairs and give Moyes stick after a comfortable, if not spectacular performance? Get a life.

Just got back from the game — even wearing two scarfs, shivering my bollocks off!! Totally cruised it. Nice both to see Cahill, and USA! USA! getting the goals. Dire second half, but simply glad the boys earned themselves a clean sheet for once. Got to be honest in saying that Saha doesn’t look interested, and I hope the rumours doing the rounds aren’t true.

Whatever, good three points. COYB

Quite simply I believe the players saw this.

In the FA Cup game — win or lose — never mind. Could have won, but never mind.

PL vs Sunderland — must win. PL game. Hammered them, like we did City. What’s next? Wigan.

The players know at least as much as the manager what to do. They will do the business to get us up a few league places in the next month.

Never left first gear. Was slightly dissapointed we didn’t play better, but it was satisfying enough. For a midweek game, in freezing conditions, I’m glad the players didn’t need to leave first gear, this match will not have tired them so can’t wait for the weekend.

All-in-all:

No Bookings.
Clean Sheet.
Minutes on the pitch for Mikky.
The return of Tim Cahill?
Fellaini is 10 times the player Cana is.

Bad points:

Donovan needs to get wider, too often there was no offerings on the outside right. But he got a goal from coming inside, so....

If we played a team with more confidence we would not have won... but maybe we would have played better if we needed to.

A win against Wigan and we're in good stead for a run into the top 6, which should be our aim.

Said it in the match thread and I’ll say it again. Fellaini was the best player on the pitch by a country mile.

Keeps the ball on the ground and never gives it away. More and more like Veira in his prime with each game.

Heitinga also deserves a mention. Great stopper with fantastic distribution as well.

Can’t say the same for Neville and Distin. The only way Neville could pass to a blue shirt was from a throw in. Even then it was touch and go. Complete Rubbish and looks totally out of his depth if the team attempt a passing game. Sooner dropped the better! Distin seems to have followed Yobo’s example of twatting it as hard as you can whenever he gets it. Apart from though...

Great win for the lads today. Snuck a point Boxing Day. Sent them packing today. I wonder how much of this progress comes from the growing competition for team places — something our squad has not really had for a long, long time.

I would love to hear people's opinion on Landon Donovan. A couple of games in. Solid start. Positionally lost at the weekend. Redemption: a goal today.

Still seems winded midway through the second half. Would love to hear from people who were at the game what they think about his play, his read of the game, and his attitude.

Donovan was better tonight as he stayed out wide compared to last Saturday. Then he gave no options for Neville whereas tonight well as Donovan played Neville gave him no decent service. I would love to see him play with Coleman but then Neville, like Hibbert, is Moyes’ favourite so no chance of that happening. I mean after all that would mean attacking football of which Moyes knows very little. Very poor value for money tonight - 15 minutes of decent stuff and 75 minutes of dross. Simply not good enough.

This love affair with Seamus Coleman really does my head in. The boy did bloody well in two games after being utterly appalling in one, and yet so many of you call for two experienced Premier League full backs, including our captain, to be benched in place of him.

And as for not finishing Sunderland off, while I know we changed gear a bit, we did totally control the game, AND if George McCartney hadn’t have cleared the ball off the line or John Mensah performed a last ditch tackle, the score could’ve been four-nil. Would that have please you all!? Probably not.......

Re: Neal Sutherland..

I believe Coleman is a right back, in the game you mention were he had a shocker he was playing left back against a player that, mark my words, will light up the World Cup in the summer.

Also the whole point of having a squad is so that, through form or injury, another capable player can come in; poor Coleman must be wondering what he has to do as Neville has been garbage for a few games now.

And as for not finishing Sunderland off, IF Sunderland had been slightly more composed and IF Howard hadn’t made cracking, match-winning saves from Zenden and Jones, then we would have been talking about 2 more lost points — the story of our season..

Nobody seems to have noticed this, but does anyone else think Louis Saha looks a bit disinterested?

He doesn't seem to be putting himself about as much as usual, and that chance he missed last night, well, how long did he want?

This is not something I noticed only last night; I've been thinking this for a few weeks now. Added to what looked like his request to be subbed against Brum, I'm starting to wonder...

Perhaps the talk of him wanting away is true? Or perhaps he’s not happy with his contract? Or perhaps I'm talking shit?

Who knows?

James but we are not talking about losing two points, are we? As Howard did what he is paid for, so saying IF is pointless; we could say IF Osman had his shooting boots on or the defender never knocked one off the line it would have been a glut of goals.

I thought we played well in the first half and utter shite in the second resorting to hoofball and although Neville was a major culprit we need him in the side at present as it is no suprise how organised we have looked since he has been back.

Like last Saturday, it was a game of two halves... only on this occasion we played well in the first half as the second half was pretty dour, relying on two Howard saves at the end. In the second half with Osman, Pienaar and Arteta in midfield we looked very lightweight and I don’t think we can afford to have all 3 on the field at the same time, though I thought Osman was one of the better players on the night.

Fellaini was again excellent and Distin had a decent game, possibly due to Senderos being on the bench.

Moyes must've felt like a kid in the sweet shop with the subs bench he had, it was the strongest bench I have seen for many a game. We do complain about our small squad, but if we had our full squad fit and healthy besides the 7 subs we had on the bench, we could also add Yakubu, Jagielka, Yobo, Hibbert, Gosling, & Rodwell to that.

I can see Vaughan being shipped out on loan once Yakubu is back and I still hope a deal can be struck to bring in Huntelaar on loan or even pay now for Beckford rather than wait till June and hope someone else doesn’t come in for him.

James, IF my auntie had a pair of balls she would be my Uncle. Pointless talking about what-ifs, as they don’t matter. Sunderland didn’t score; we scored two and that’s all the record books will show. In the furure we will see the result on a piece of paper and think, "3 points there" not, "but Sunderland nearly scored".

Poor performance in the second half and, like Saturday, I thought when Arteta came on we stopped going forward as much... not knocking him but it affected the shape and pace of the game. Vaughan didn’t have a look-in and Fellaini faded out of the game. However, I don’t care as our defence managed to keep another clean sheet and Howard is doing what he is supposed to do: stop shots.

We were pretty comfortable up to 80 mins when Howard had to make his first save and we really should have put the game beyond Sunderland by then.

I can't understand also the shouts against Neville here and claims about being shocking for the last 3-4 games are ridiculous. With him as a right back, we kept 2 clean sheets; I can't recall a single defensive mistake he made; in the first half against Brum he was the only one trying to do something and drive the team forward. Yes, his distribution was poor against Sunderland but the midfield has enough creativity to cover him up. I also checked the stats and the danger areas and guess what — in both games, there were more Everton attacks via the right side than via the left.

I like Coleman and have high hopes for him but I don’t think that he is ready yet to be our first-choice right-back. A lot of the people here love to hype up a player and shoot him down fast when he makes a mistake. Neville is used to that kind of pressure — after all, he has been told he is shit for 15 years by the England fans — but Coleman is young and there are a lot of young players that simply crush out after one bad game and negative publicity.

We have seen Coleman only when we were chasing games and when he can bomb forward, how will he cope when put under pressure? His positional and tactical skills, his defensive awareness were tested only once at Benfica and unfortunately he was overwhelmed there, so the shouts for him being our first choice are little premature IMO.

Neal, the few chances Coleman has got he has excelled. I would go as far as to say he has played better than any other Everton RB in the last decade. Which other RB has changed any game he has been involved in? Obviously we don’t know if it was a one-off or if he really is that good. Surely worth taking the risk in finding out!?

I think we were poor last night. I’m glad we won but that was an awful game played between two awful looking teams.

What gets my back up is people who think Moyes can do no wrong. Sunderland were there for the taking last night and we’ve yet to get into a positive goal difference. I also think the team owe us a fine display after Saturday’s debacle yet it was another damp squib of a performance.

Damp squib in the second half, Alan, but I think you’re a wee bit harsh to label the entire match as being that bad... we actually looked very good in the first half and should’ve maybe scored another one or two.

I was dissapointed to see Saha chased down when he looked to be in on goal. He’s not in the best form at the moment... hopefully Yak will come back from Africa with some good form & match fitness.

On a separate note, I’m pretty fed up with Z-Cars... had to wait from number 38 in the queue on the phone to get my Man U tickets this morning! Only half an hour on hold — enough time for the 3 S’s, breakky, and then off to work!

First half, fine... but why did we switch off in the second period? It’s all very well saying Neville’s poor distribution doesn’t matter as we have a creative midfield. The fact is when he hoofs it upfield it’s the opposition defence or midfield that gets possession — not our midfield!

Donovan was virtually frozen out of the game last night except when he nipped inside to collect Cahill’s knockdown. Coleman should at least have had 30 minutes to show what he is good at namely bursting forward and getting good crosses into the box which Pip seldom achieves.

Vaughan only had a short time but didn’t suggest that he is the answer to the problem of striker and although Saha has a great first touch (mostly) his attitude seems rather too nonchalant at times. Fellaini looks the goods at last whilst Osman for all his effort is too easily dispossessed. Still as has already been said we got three points but we will need to increase the effort for those games in February — none of them easy.

"What gets my back up is people who think Moyes can do no wrong"

Well save your back Alan, because, with the possible exception of Richard Dodd, there aren’t many of them. What I’ve said before, and it seems like becoming my mantra, is that there are people who think that what Moyes does wrong is outweighed by the wider context of all the things he does right. Things which some people either don’t notice, or he’s such a good manager they take them for granted.

We were decent in the first half, and poor in the second. Sunderland weren’t atrocious, they passed well when they could win the ball and they pressed us well, particularly in the second half, refusing to lie down and die. I’ve never known Everton win a game without someone coming on here and saying the opposition were shite. We won, comfortably, so there’s no point wondering what might have happened if... You can only win the game you’re playing.

The next biggest negative point (after the easing off in the 2nd half) was that we went too long, too often, and we actually scored from one of them, so it's hard to complain too much.

Good point, Mike Allison. It can't be all neat passes along the ground, otherwise that too becomes predictable see West Brom last season.

You need to mix it up and yes, Donovan's goal came from a long ball, knock down and a finish. We had a couple of other chances that came from that infact.

Also... why didn’t we continue pressing and go all out putting 100% effort in the second half? well, because we didn’t need to. Why tire yourself if you can get the job done easier?

We have a game on Saturday, so players not being overly knackered from yesterday is a good thing.

Apart from the very best teams, when you score 5-6 in a game it is usually followed by a drought, I dont think this is a coincidence.

I would rather win 3 games 2-0 than 1 game 7-0.

What if we kept going 100% yesterday and Pienaar pulled a hamstring or something similar, everyone would have a go at Moyes for not telling the players to take the foot off the peddle.

It is what Man U and Co do. otherwise they would win 4-0 each game, but generally they get to 2-0 then they rest and wait for the final wistle, if they score more great, if not great as they have got 3 points.

Agree in general with Fran Mitchell’s first post, we didn’t have to leave 1st gear and were comfortable; the match was won by half-time despite a bit of a Sunderland rally in the last 15 minutes.

We took our foot off the gas; had they scored, I feel we would have gone up the other end and slotted to maintain the two-goal differential. Disagree with the perception that, against a ’more confident’ team (is there one at the moment? — excluding Birmingham!!!), we would not have won — when we played Man City, were they (more) confident? I think they may have been, but they got a lesson from a team that clicked; I think Fran acknowledged this after the statement (about a confident team).

As a season ticket holder between August 1984 as a boy and May 2002 as a man (children have spent my money since!), I shared some great highs (Bayern at home as a scally 15-year-old, taught me what love for something other than your parents was... although I was getting spoilt by our football at that time) and some massive lows (took my then girlfriend, now my wife, to a game against Norwich about 1991, sat in the Paddock in a crowd of around 20,000 and she filed her nails and applied make up such was the interest... I nearly joined her)!

The football we are playing now is exciting me again. I like what Moyes has done and our players are becoming heroes again or so my son says. This is a hard league, look at the Cup game for evidence; there is no divine right to success, but we have got our dignity back (from earlier in the season).

Now, for Wigan. We have to correct last year’s nadir. I have no idea what went wrong then but it was like 1991 all over again. I think (hope) this season will be different. I am hopeful. Please, all take heart.

Wow. Really? Moaning about the second half?

How many times has Goodison Park seen such an easy, comfortable game this season? Probably easy to count them on one hand.

Yes, we didn’t swarm forward and annihilate them like we could have done... because we didn’t need to. We went straight into fifth gear in the first half, smashed them silly then just played out the rest of the game like a training match, knowing the job was done.

Sure, Sunderland had a chance or two at the end... but we would have simply upped the tempo again until we scored again.

What matters at the end of the day? Winning 15-0 or 3 points?

Easy, easy, easy..
