Jermaine Beckford

Comments (31)

I guess that this is probably more suited to the Rumour Mill, but here goes...

A close work colleague of mine is very good friends with the goalkeeping coach at a Championship club nearby to where we work in Sheffield. He just happened to mention this morning that his mate had told him that we have definitely signed Beckford from Leeds and he will join us during the close season.

Apparently it's common knowledge in football circles. Kind of fits in with the Vaughan to Leicester rumours as well?

Doesn’t really excite me to be honest. I don’t think he would make the squad, nevermind the first eleven.

I watched Beckford a bit when he was on loan at Scunny and he looked great.

It’s one thing looking good in that league though, quite another doing it in the Prem.

Fingers crossed though!

He looked really good at Old Trafford and at White Hart Lane.
Worth a punt I say.

I heard back in January that this was a done deal too. I think the fact that the rumour mill has gone quiet around Jermaine Beckford suggests a deal has been done somewhere - whether that was with Everton or not remains to be seen.

If the rumour that Vaughan is going to Leicester on loan with a view to a permanent move is true then I don’t mind admitting I would be a little disappointed.

I know not everybody likes him but his development has been seriously disrupted by injury and I would like to see him after a full injury-free season before passing final judgement.

Maybe I am just being ’emotional’ but the goal he scored to become the youngest ever Premiership scorer did just a little bit to relieve the Rooney disappointment.

We shall see I suppose.

1. League One football is piss poor. Any half decent footballer is going to look good in that league. There is simply a massive gap between scoring a few goals in League One and making it in the Premiership.

2. James Vaughan doesn’t have the goods to make it at Everton. Even Victor Anichebe has more chance then Vaughan. Serious injuries have stalled Vaughan’s development and this loan to the Championship is probably the start of his career in the lower leagues.

If Moyes brought in Beckford and let Vaughan go permanently I for one wouldn’t be too bothered.

I doubt either player is good enough to become a regular in the Everton side though.

Both Vaughan and Beckford strike me as players who can score goals in lower leagues but probably wouldn’t get more then 8 goals in the Premiership per season. A bit like David Nugent or Robert Earnshaw.

Would be surprised if he’s ahead of Yak or Saha when fit...but gives us a another option. Bags of pace and clearly knows where the goal is.

He caused enough problems to Man U and Tottenham to suggest he might have something to offer.

On a free with low wages probably as a lower league player. No brainer.

He first plied his trade not too far from where I live in Wealdstone. Some I know who used to watch him back then say he has a stinking attitude and always chucked toys out the pram when things weren’t going his way. I hope these rumours aren’t true. I wouldn’t want him at Everton.

James Vaughan, though he may never be a great player, will be able to play in the Premier League. We don’t know that about Beckford. I would rather not take the risk of taking him over Vaughan. I think if we get Beckford, Vaughan will go on a season long loan next year before we sell him permanently.

To be honest I’m not sure what to make of it either. I don’t see him as a starter, but with the injury history of bothYak and Saha, we need extra back up. Assuming he does arrive in the summer, only time will tell. The word is that he’ll be on £25K a week, which would fit with his position as an unknown from League 1.
To coin a phrase: "watch this space."

We’ve seen Anichebe and Vaughan and the general concenus of opinion is that neither is good enough for a starting berth, impact subs maybe but thats about all .
Beckford has done it in the lower leagues wether he can transforn that to the premiership we dont know, if he can great, if not ok he’s not cost anything and we can sell him for a profit , no brainer really.
What i would say is when you play with better players you play better, Cahill , Donovan , Lescott are all examples of players from lower or inferior leagues who we questioned when they came here but improved to such an extent they became regular cast iron first teamers.

I remember a few years ago that being a good wage for a footballer. It’s amazing how drastically things have changed over a short period of time.

Available on a free transfer on moderate wages I agree with Sam, its a no brainer. Also I dont believe he is being lined up as a replacement for Vaughan, he has gone on loan to simply play some football.

We wont have much money available this summer again unless we sell one of our players and as I have said previously I would rather us spend on retaining the current squad, spending all our budget on Donovan and picking up a couple of freebies ( Beckford and Ledley ?? ). If we can do that I believe we have a squad capable of finishing AT LEAST 4th...

For Beckford perhaps read Bobby Zamora? Banged in goals for fun at Brighton, couldn’t cut it (at first) in the Prem. Jury still out on him even if there is a ridiculous campaign for him (Zamora) to make the SA plane!!

Terry are you serious, Beckford on the right - no way. I think Beckford is really top notch striker and would be made up if we get him. I still believe Delph is superb talent too

Mulitple Choice (there are no wrong or right answers)

A) Vaughan - doesn’t know where the goal is.

B) Anichebe - doesn’t know where the goal is.

C) Beckford - does know where the goal is.

now then, Now then,

I live in Leeds and have seen the lad play. He is very suited to the lower leagues! He did well against man u etc, but thats the fa cup all over! Lets hope he can cut the mustard in the top divison. I think he won’t.

B) Anichebe - waste of space.

C) Beckford - watch this space.

Beckford has bags of pace, very good finisher with either foot, scores important goals on big occasions including one at Old Trafford and he’s free. Well worth a punt - and if he turns out to be the next Brett Angel then we can probably still get a few million for him from Newcastle in a year or two.

The fact he is reported to be a bit of an arrogant bastard doesn’t worry me too much - I think most good goal scorers genarally are to some extent. You can’t buy confidence so they say... and if he has it... and he’s on a free... then we will be buying some confidence for nothing... which must be considered a bargain?!

I’m not sure he can link up play in midfield, which is a prerequiste in our 4-5-1. Sounds a bit like a Defoe type player.

Marcus Bent #2 ... good in the lower leagues and useful if and when we need him ... but he’s not going to set the world on fire.

Give him a chance though ... just wish he’d get that awful neck tattoo removed.

To those who doubt that Beckford can make the jump to prem standard here are a few names that spring to mind. Cahill ex Millwall, Jags ex Wednesday, Lescott ex Wolves, Arteta ex Rangers, Donovan ex MLS, Saha ex Fulham, Baines ex Wigam.
There may be a few more.

Dick Fearon not being picky but Jags was Sheff Utd and had played the prem we got him after they got relegated, Saha played prem for Fulham and Man Utd, Baines played prem Wigan, Arteta also PSG and made Ronaldinho look v average. Not saying players can’t make the grade just saying some dodgy comparisons.

Not the type of player to take the team to the next level. He’ll end up being an impact sub, where the ball is hoofed up the park to him.
I still believe in either Yak or Saha with Tim in an advanced role is our best strikeforce. Then keep Victor and Vaughan in reserve. We need a pacy winger to supply the bullets more than a striker.

Our best performances have all been with the ball firmly on the deck so please don’t equate a hoof and run merchant as progress, ideally a target man to help Yak out if he plays or another fast striker to play alongside Saha, we still need someone on the right hand side as Donovan has shown.

I dont agree with the general feelings on here. I have watched Beckford live on 3 occasions and I think he will make it in the Prem. He’s quick, young and has a good first touch, Moyes can coach the rest and we have a potential £10m striker in 5 years.

I am struggling to see what peoples issues are here.

The bloke is young, hungry to test himself at a higher level, clearly has some talent and most importantly is free.

There is absolutely nothing to lose here so why the critisism ? If he is hopeless he will be sold for a small fee that will more than likely be more than his wages for a season have cost us. As I say, I just cat see the downside to this aquisition if it happens...

My mate is a season ticket holder at Leeds and sees Beckford every match.
When I spoke to him about Beckford coming here he said that he looks good in that standard but "He’s not that good, really" for a Prem side. So we will have to wait and see.If the rumour is true, that is.
