The Mail Bag
Are you Superstitious......?

I was pondering Brendan O'Doherty's post the other night on Francis Porters "The tide is Turning...." mailbag thread...
"David, could be just the Chardonnay, but 1891,1915,1939,1963,1987.......2011." and it got me thinking....
Was Brendan alluding to the fact that if you add a 4 onto the last digit of each consecutive title winning season then you'd get the next?
If so this would be misleading - so I must be wrong about that - as 3 of the title winning years are ommited, the real sequence is as we know is....
1891, 1915, 1928, 1932, 1939, 1963, 1970, 1985 and 1987...
So, if I've got this right, the real sequence is 4, 3, 4, 7, 4, 7, 5, 2 or in real terms 24, 13, 4, 7, 24, 7, 15 and 2 - so no real correlation.
Or is there....
We have never gone more than 24 years — if I'm right — and not won a league title. This has nearly happened twice but was averted in 1915 and 1963.
If we don't win the title next season we will have gone more the 24 years without a championship title — for the very first time in our history.
However... wait for it... wait for it.....
There was 48 years between the two seasons when we last broke the 24-year hoodoo, 1915 and 1963....
Add another 48 years on to find the next time we will break the ..... oh my God..... OH MY GOD!?!?
24-year hoodoo...
It's 2011!!!!
Put your house on it lads! The trophy's coming home.....!!!!!

Put my theory to a mate of mine yesterday (Man U) fan who responded by betting me £50 we wouldn’t win the league - I nearly bit his hand off! What a mug...!
We’re in the money.... we’re in the money...
Reading this has just made my day!
Can’t be done with all this superstitious rubbish but it is a happy coincidence that our squad (with a quick winger to replace Donovan) is undoubtably the best in the league.
Once we have the summer to recover all injuries it is highly likely we will will the title next year with three or four games to spare.
Wayne can cheer us on from the sidelines and think of what might have been as Rodwell lives the dream.
It’s all dropping in to place now though.... think it goes....
2011, 2012, 2018, 2035 then 2059.
Gaps inbetween go 13 and 17 years after 1915, 7 and 12 years after 1963 so must be 1 year and 7 years after 2011 then 2035 as 24 years on then a big old 24 year hoodoo gap to make it to 2059.
There you go, done.
24 year break / win two titles in between / 24 year break / win two titles in between / 24 year break which takes us up to 2011 so then win two more titles in between now and 2035 then nothing until 2059.
Just go to pin the two title years down between 2011 and 2035 and we’re there....
According to the Maya the world is going to end on New Years Eve in 2012 so the only chance we have of winning the league is 2010/11. So the sequence doesn’t survive.
Unless of course the Premier League make a decision that whoever is on top of the league when the Earth is sucked into a Black Hole takes the title.
But would there be time to engrave our name on it?
Am I taking this too seriously or what?
Brilliant - what a result!
Basically, every generation has seen a League Title since 1891, whilst some have been lucky and seen a few in between as well.
I’m superstitious enough to believe it’s possible. We had the Chinese Year of the Rat in 1984 as well!! ha ha.
It’s a bit of fun, but would anybody have seriously ever dared to say in December 1983 that with crowds down to 13,000, no money, LFC wiining everything, a team that could not score, seemingly no hope,a mere 5 months later we’d have a trophy and within a year be rampaging to League and Euro success?
One thing I do know is that Everton are a darn sight more likely to win it now than when Moyes took over.
Add our 9 years as Champions to a further 6 years for WW2 and 4 years for WW1 and you have 19 years. Eat your hearts out Redshite and Mancs!!! ha ha :)
The obvious Gwladys End chant would have to be:
"One Apocalypse and two World Wars..."
Indeed, since we were champions through both Wars, we actually have twenty titles...still a few more wins to go for you, Sir Alex...
1891
No titles for 24 years
1915
*1928}
*1932} 2 titles in the 24 year "gap"*
1939
No titles for 24 years
1963
*1970}
*1985} 2 titles in the 24 year "gap"*
1987
No titles for 24 years
... 2011?
... *????}
... *????} 2 titles in the 24 year "gap"*?
...2035?
... No titles for 24 years?
... 2059?
- And so on...
Sorry
However, I’m still upset about 1999 when we failed to win the FA Cup despite having won it in 1933 and 1966. Can anyone explain that?
Also, what happened to that World Cup thing in 1998? Was it purely down to a giraffe necked Danish arsehole of a referee sending off Beckham when it should have been Simeone? How could one man ruin such a perfect sequence as:
1962 Brazil
1966 England
1970 Brazil
1974 West Germany
1978 Argentina
1982 Italy
1986 Argentina
1990 West Germany
1994 Brazil
1998 England
2002 Brazil
Does nothing make sense any more?

I needed two cups of coffee to try and digest the above, but wow is all I can say.
I do agree that lady luck has often deserted EFC but using your figures you have actually managed to provide a schedule, better still a winning formula (which is ongoing and somehow includes the down fall of the RS). Fucking brilliant.
My house and car are up for sale pending a quick visit to William Hills. Is it just the EPL or do you think we are on for winning a cup or two??
