Remember the Lucas Neill surprise?

Sitting over here in Boston on business ? checking my blackberry under the meeting table and seeing the deadline come and go with no activity ? it struck me that maybe Davey has a master plan: a great free transfer we can pick up in the next 2 weeks for nothing and then sell on for a milion squids in January, a la Lucas Neill.

So I just wanted to check the PFA free agent list... looking for a six-foot-plus centre-forward with Premier League experience who just might fit the bill... and we come up with Jeremy Alladiere, Benjani, Vas Te and Vennigor of Hesslink, along with a host of scholars just released. So that's that then ? no real quality, as you might suspect. Unless you like the look of 38-year-old Barrington Hayles...

Then I had a look for right sided midfielders with electric pace... couldn't find any ? unless we want Anderson Franco de Silva back again. So I guess we shouldn't expect any free transfers to give us a nice surprise ? or can you find a hidden gem who might improve our squad?

We're fine in the midfield department - it's a clinical finisher we need. Unless Latchford or Lineker come out of retirement, then we're struggling, unless a certain St Michael of the Owen fancies a pop on the blue side of Merseyside...

Would it not be against the rules (hypothetically) for a team to release a player on a free so another team can sign them?

I see Franny Jeffers is on there...at 29 is he worth a final shot??

Or Kevin McCloud, also now 29. Its sad to see some of our former starlets on the free transfer scrap heap when they should be in their prime.

Jeffers!?!

I went to Hillsborough for a game last season and saw him play for Wednesday. I couldn't believe how much he had deteriorated!

To put it mildly, he wasn't impressing anyone. No pace, didn't put himself about, couldn't hold up the ball, nothing. I suppose he can still finish, but he didn't get the chance to show that as the service he got from the midfield was utter shite (as it will be at Goodison as well). ;-)

If he is back in Liverpool it is better news for the pubs than it is for this club.

Vennegoor of Hesselink has already signed for some Austrian club. Would have been an excellent player for receiving hoofballs and running like a headless chicken though.

Resigning Shandy Andy would be the joke of the century...

Just happened to stumble across that one as my boss was wondering what the Shandyman was up to nowadays.

Turns out he was inventing rumours on WIki having had one shandy too many last night...(again)!
