Vaughan: Not so positive thinking
Comments (45)
So... we find ourselves in a striking crisis ? Saha and Anichebe are injured, while Yakubu is far from match fit. Meanwhile, Beckford is so far struggling to adapt to top flight life ? albeit 3 games in. So who's left?
James Vaughan... So what does David Moyes do? He sends the pissing lad out on load.
And what happens in turn? A hat-trick!
Oh what wonderful thinking from Davey!
'No forwards so I will dump one and look now at my judgement'. Sometimes I worry about the bloke's sanity when he makes such a ridiculous decision.
And why has Beckford been binned already? I mean for Pete's sake, the bloke hasn't had 5 minutes. Of course since he isn't a Moyes puppet i.e. Distin, Neville or Osman, then he gets crucified at the first attempt! Oh what an oh so glorious start to this season!

I would like nothing more than to see this most whole hearted and committed of players to have a storming loan spell at Palace, with the luck he deserves with injuries, and him then to return to Everton, with Moyes giving him the chance of a long run in the team, something he has never had.
If Saha showed half the energy and effort that Vaughan does, he would be unstoppable. Well done, James, here's hoping there are many more where that came from.
Anyway, I'm sure everyone will wish him well; good luck, James, you deseve a break,
Coybs
He's going the correct way about it by bagging 3 on his home debut. He'll now have to show some consistency in goals and games to turn Moyes head. Here's hoping, the kid deserves a break.
I find the OP a little absurd. He was loaned out to get regular first team action. He's been in our squad for 6 years now and has never had a long run in the team, fit or not. This stint at Palace could be the making of him and I think it's a good move for both parties involved. Just because he bangs in a hat trick against a poor Pompey team doesn't suddenly make him the answer to our poor attacking form!
I took the liberty of checking out a Palace fan website. They are creaming themselves over him! One very interesting comment from one of them though which I think sums the lad up.....
"Did anyone else just want to tell him to take it easy after he scored his third? There was a point where he sprinted 50 metres trying to close down three Pompey defenders. I just wanted him to be taken off and wrapped in cotton wool!"
Yes, he has had his injury problems ? to put it mildly ? but he has battled back. He deserves some credit at least for doing that, but he seems to get damn all from some Evertonians.
Vaughan may not be the answer to all our problems... but, as far as I am concerned, he is PART of the answer. I think Moyes's decision to loan him out is stupid, as is the loaning out of Yobo. The last two seasons, we have been decimated by injuries ? when we do get a virtual full squad available, the manager starts to loan out players!!!! Absolutely stupid.
Well done David Moyes for giving our 5th - yes anti-Moyes brigade - 5th choice striker the opportunity to get himself some experience at an appropriate level, get him off the wage bill and let both us and JV see how he comes on.
JV's had plenty of chances to shine given his age and despite horrendous injuries he's never taken them because he's simply not good enough (yet?)
Ask JV what he'd prefer - stay with us for the season with the chance of a couple of run out's with 10 mins to go given Moyes penchant for 4-5-1 or a full season (hopefully) playing football, which is all I'm sure he really wants to do at the moment.
A swallow doesnt make a summer - fingers crossed he stays fit and keeps banging them in for Palace.
Well done JV - and well done Moyes.
As for Beckford being binned, one game on the bench isn't exactly binning him. Moyes will bring him through to the first team as he seems fit. Probably as a sub this Saturday and then starting against Brentford.
Would you have posted anything if he had gone 10 games and not scored? Would you have said it was a mistake then? He scored a hat trick against a crap side in the Championship, whoopee! He must be the saviour of Everton.
DJ Campbell scored loads in the Championship, would you want him in your side? I think not (even though he scored a screamer on Saturday)
As usual, people react to the smallest of things, Vaughan scores a goal, he is Pele and Moyes is stupid for loaning him out, We have lost a couple of games, Moyes is crap, get rid of him.
The papers didin't usually post the league table until about 10 games in, God I wish it was still like that. Oh no we are in a relegation battle already with only 4 games played, woe is us.
The season is over 38 games, not 4 and certainly not one game against a gang of duds in the Championship.
Surely this is evidence he's done exactly the right thing? The whole point of loaning him out, after all, was to build his strength and confidence at a lower level before hopefully bringing him back into a strong, winning Everton side.
Absolutely delighted for the lad. As others have said, he deserves it after what he has been through with injuries. Let's hope he bags a hatful in the next few months and comes back the player we all know he can be.
Beckford has been at the club five minutes so he's obviously being given a chance to play or he wouldn't have been bought. Saha is a proven goalscorer in the Premier League and, despite his injury problems, is probably the best striker we have. So when he's fit, he generally plays and rightly so.
It isn't about giving JV a chance - the fact of the matter is he's injured nearly all the time. So we can't rely on him - even if he bursts into the first team, scores ten in three games, he could then be crocked for six months in the blink of an eye.
That's why the loan move was a no brainer. Everton can't afford to rely on Vaughan, yet he needs to prove he can be relied on - a catch 22 if he remained at Everton, but something he can do if he's on loan at a lower level and considered an automatic first team choice.
If Vaughan injures himself again whilst at Palace, his Everton career is all but over. If he does well, he'll be welcome back at Everton. How can I be so sure? Well, look at the career of Leon Osman - serious injury, loaned out to Carlisle/Derby, key player for both clubs, back to Everton and first team regular ever since.
Enough of that common sense you are spouting. Cut it out.
I do find the original post a bit odd, on one hand James says in his opinion, "Beckford is so far struggling to adapt to top flight life" then later asks the question "And why has Beckford been binned already?"
He knew there were striking problems so why send a lad out on loan who has a fair amount of top flight experience especially when everyone else is either injured or struggling for form. It beggers belief that he would rather play midfielders up front. Whether fit or not Vaughan has never been given a fair crack.
As for Beckford the lad while the lad has so far struggled how is he to ever improve unless he plays? And wasn't it the goals against United and Spurs that Moyes signed him on the back of?
God forbid The Moyesiah has ever made a mistake in his life for Pete's sake! That is why us so called 'Negative arses' get the bloody hump when there is an immediate outcry for having any kind of justification for questioning any decision he makes.
Maybe you have never said that we should sell Vaughan James, but I bet others on here have.
The lad has had a few chances, I will never forget Oldham in the cup at home when we thought grab your chance and he was as bad as could possibly be.
I hope he gets the games and gets back to us as there was a time when he looked the business, but the odds for that happening are slim given how prone he is to injuries.
I'd have given this a read if you posted it before Vaughan scored a hat-trick. Your criticism of Moyes is ridiculous, and the timing is wrong.
Hindsight is a beautiful thing, but so is foresight and Vaughan needs to play consistently and score consistently before he is worth a second look for us at the moment
JV has found his level.
"As for Beckford the lad while the lad has so far struggled how is he to ever improve unless he plays?" WTF????? Beckford has been involved in 4 out of the 5 games we have played this season, starting 3 of them.
So what if JV scores 20 goals in the championship this season?
Bloody hell, lets take him back immediately! and buy Michael Chopra and Jason Scotland too while we're at it. we'll be unstoppable then!
This kid could have been the business. He has always had skill, pace, strength & an eye for goal. But he's had outrageous luck with injuries and, such things don't only take it out on your body but on your mind.
The idea that JV has found his level is insulting to the kid. He has done it in the premier league and in Europe. It may well be that a change of scene is what he needs to refresh himself. Change is often as good as rest.
Who would I rather have leading the line, JV or Beckford? Easy, JV every time. I'm delighted for the kid. There's no pressure at Palace so it could end up perfect. But I'd still prefer him back at Goodison eventually. I have no doubt he has unfinished business in the premier league.
The problem I see with the strikers we have is we can't get out of them, or afford to give them, a good enough run of games. Saha / Yak due to constant injuries / lack of fitness - and Beckford or Vaughan look as though they need at least 5 games to get into the flow. Results are all important and so we end up reverting to Cahill, who does a great job for us, but we're never gonna score loads of goals with that system.
Hopefully Yak will get up to a level of fitness where we can start him soon with Tim behind him. Either that or we can try and sign Chris Iwelumo in January!
The last 3 loans he has been out on have all ended early due to injuries.
His body isn't up to what his mind is willing it to do unfortunately.
2) Whoever was the manager I would be critical of the decision.
3) I don't think anyone is saying James Vaughan is our saviour ? just a very promising young player who deserves to be given a chance at Everton.
whilst I really rate the lad, he hasn't ever had a decent run of games for us, and is unlikely to in the near future being 4th/5th choice.
The formation against United was a tactical choice (whether right or wrong) and also based on the fact that Yak wasn't quite match fit, and Beckford not quite ready to be thrown in to a game like that after 3 games for the club. Doesn't mean to say that they won't be used soon though and when Saha/Anichebe are fit again too, Vaughan is unlikely to get much of a look in at the moment.
However the opening poster saying Beckford has been binned is just daft. The lad is just finding his way in the Premiership so I would certainly expect Moyes to play a senior, experienced player against one of, if not the best team in the league, than a League One player finding his feet.
he wouldn't have scored a hat trick against man utd
If he scores four more hat tricks in his spell with Palace, it will still be the correct decision by Moyes.
The lad needs playing time to make him a better player and therefore a better asset to Everton.
As for Beckford, first impression, i do worry on his first touch as being heavy, ala Beattie.
This skill is essential to suit our play in the way Yakubu showed in the last 15 minutes on Saturday.
Look it's a massive step up for the lad and he could've been trying to hard, when that happens you do mis-control the ball. Added to the fact we didn't look like scoring in open play for the first three games, then i'm thinking the pressure just got to him and he's had time to re-evaluate his play.
We all know Moyes is a hands on boss and the subsequent teachings will follow.
Remember him scoring against Bolton and then not long after getting stretchered off with blood soaking through his sock and streaming out of his boot? How many other players have you ever seen sever a fucking artery in their foot ? That was just a total freak injury. He must seriously have pissed off a gypsy in his school days or something.
If he can somehow manage to remain fully fit, avoid any further injuries and get an extended run in the team, then i would back Vaughan to outscore, and outperform, both Beckford and Anichebe in this league. Hopefully this loan spell at Crystal Palace goes better than his previous ones and the lad at least manages to make it through the 3 months unscathed.
And then we'll all be happy!
We cant afford 25-30 million world class strikers and even if we could we cant afford their wages.
We cant even afford 13 million pound average strikers like Gyan.
Beckford was a no brainer for us. A free transfer, proved he could score against Premier sides and doesnt appear to get injured too often (although I say that tongue in cheek where EFC are concerned).
Saha for his talent and ability is worth the aggravation of spending half his time in the treatment room.
I personally would love to see the Yak with Beckford and Anichebe in a 4-3-3 at home and that would surely compensate for the fact we cant keep clean sheets.
For instance in pre-season when he dislocated his shoulder, purely bad luck.
Vaughan has never looked out of place in an Everton shirt when fit and I'm wondering why, with our current predicament, he wasn't given a chance this season? Beckford is above him in the pecking order ? but the lad has never scored goals above the 3rd tier of the game.
I know Moyes sees our strikers every day ... but, on the evidence so far, I can't see why Vaughan isn't getting a shot at nailing a place in our 1st team.
Prove himself at Palace and stay fit and I hope a new contract is given to him, I would hate to see him go elsewhere.

Now, Saha is injured again Yak is still regaining full match fitness and Beckford has to improve to take that big step up to the Premier League.
I have just been checking through the results for Palace as Vaughan is there and he has bagged 3 for them against Pompey! Now please don?t get me wrong ? I don?t think that he is the answer to our problem as I think that he is now playing at the right level (The Championship). But with a lack of options up front, so much so that we resorted to the big Fella and Tim up front for the Utd game, did we do the right thing? Probably... as, if Vaughan is ever going to make it, he needs first team competitive football ? not the odd game in the rezzies and sitting on the bench.
So... do we think that Vaughan is in the right place right now?
