Is Mersyside Blue?
Comments (26)
As an Everton supporter growing up in Coventry, I have allways been curious about the red and blue divide accross Mersyside and which club have the majority of supporters in that region.
As a blue, I have held on to the belief that the city of Liverpool and the whole of Merseyside have a larger population of Evertonians than gobshites but this is probably a biased view and, as I don't live there, I really don't know.
I had a similar conversation with a friend of mine who was born and bred in Knowlsley and had moved down to Coventry to be with his girlfriend. The conversation began with the topic of Everton moving to Kirkby and, although as myself he did not like the idea, he did claim that Kirkby had a massive Everton following. Can anyone from Meryside answer these questions for me?
The usual answer is 50-50 but, as we are the originals, I like to think we still have more.

I don't think we help our presence in the City by when skies are grey's insistence that it is uncool to wear replica clothing
Any Evertonians unfortunate enough to be in town when the RS are at home, will be aware of the multitude of foreigners, many unable to speak English wearing the RS shirt. These make up the majority of their attendance, whereas I would say the majority of ours are local.
There is probably slightly more Reds than Blues but it's always a good sight to see young lads with the Everton kit on......and a little sad because of all the heartache that they will have to endure supporting the Blues
One said problem is that a lot of young Blues became turncoats to the Reds when the fluked teh Champions League, my friend's cousin did it and even started trying to skit us for supporting Everton, obviously we no longer talk to him now.....!!
Growing up in Stockport in the late 80s/early 90s there were shitloads of Liverpool supporters in my school, they literally outnumbered the fans of any other side (I think partly cos Manure and Shitty were a bit crap back then) and not one of them was a bloody scouser. Some of them made vague claims about some gran from the Wirral but I never believed 'em.
My general observation though is that wherever in the world I go, I reckon that I see more Liverpool fans than any other club's wearing that red home shirt of theirs. This does not mean they have more fans than anybody, simply that they like wearing that shirt wherever they go.
Of course, some wear it to highly inappropriate places such as work, anywhere hot and end up dripping in sweat and stinking the place out in that nylon, to the pub when other teams are playing etc.
Generally if you see an Everton fan in replica shirts they look a bit more intelligent for some reason and this is usually borne out in conversation with a deep knowledge of the Club and football in general, whilst your average Liverpool fan in a red shirt seems to know very little about football and even their own club. Most have no idea that Everton played at Anfield or that until 1965 they had won very little indeed since the First World War.
I'm from Ireland and most Liverpool fans I met know nothing about their club, history, or football in general. I remember one day I was in work (it was the day of the FA Cup derby when Gosling scored) and a guy came in with a big stupid Liverpool jacket and stupid Liverpool cap on; I said to him "Oh, I see you're a Liverpool fan, are you gona get to watch the game later?" and the arsehole looked at me with his stupid kopite face and said "Oh, who are we playing?"
I didn't even respond... my point is they are not fans and the saying "One Evertonian is worth 10 RS" is very VERY true!!
I remember once I was working with one who was giving it out that they would thrash someone in the prem that weekend and that Stevie G would "smash them up". The funny thing was that the loveable RS captain was and had been out with a well publicised injury. Maybe the moron meant Gerrard was going to "smash them up" down his local instead??
Grame Souness also stated comments along similar lines. Not that it matters. As Dave Hickson said, "One Evertonian is worth twenty Reds."
Now that would be nice..
If I ever met a scouser in a koptwat shirt, I would show genuine surprise, I shit you not. Try it!!! Next time you're on holiday, go up and ask that twat in a koptwat shirt where he/she is from... I will guarantee they will not be from Merseyside.
Am I telling you something you didn't already know here??
I currently work in Manchester and have had the misfortune of meeting tons of those Greater Manchester redshite fans from the 70s/80s era. Only one turned out to know anything about football and the history of his team and that was a genuine surprise. I'm friendly with him to this day for derby match banter.
I lived down South for quite a number of years too and again had the misfortune to meet many a redshite. Not a single one knew anything about their club or indeed about football in general.
Finally, one of my best mates is from Portsmouth but raised in Germany to English parents. His Scouse step dad got him into Everton as a kid and his fanaticism and knowledge of all things St. Domingo and onwards are on a par with any match going Blue I know.
It doesn't matter whether we or they have the most fans in the city. What matters is that one of ours is definitely worth at least twenty of theirs. COYB!
Before the Premier League was formed, both Liverpool and Everton had a monopoly on title wins... but unfortunately the media tends to report that football history started with the formation of the Premier League so statistically our city do not figure compared to Chelsea, Man Utd and Arsenal..... :(
Dave would die for Everton.

But, judging from last night's match, Anfield was half empty. So, to be honest, I don't really know now.
