After the rather large set back at the weekend and much debate, tonight's game at Brentford seems to have been overlooked... surely here is an opportunity to at least restore a little pride?
So... what will the lineup be?... and the result? I've been to the bookies and placed a fiver on 3-1

Are we on TV? Web? The north London derby will take the most interest but can't see a more interesting game especially concerning our giant killing killing potential by Brentford.... Brentford!

Since Saturday the atmosphere on this site has been gloomy to say the least. The comments in the main have been negative and scathing (rightly so after Saturday's debacle).
Well a game has come at just the right time! We have had three days of anger and hurt and I for one hope never to see a performance of the like again. We must now get behind the team and hope that they have the same passion that we do for EFC.
Like D:Ream once said "things can only get better" and I believe that they will. Moyes faces one of the toughest tests of his career and if the people in the know are to be believed this man is a top manager so lets see him earn his cash. The start to the season has been dreadful but the next three games are all winnable and then we have a derby that may just be one of the most important for both teams in a long time.
Big ask but win all them and this negativity dissapears, yes overly optimistic maybe but whats the point of looking back, all that shit has happened and I dont want to be reminded of it.
I think he is going to take Distin out of the firing line tonight. His confidence is shot to pieces after Berbatov gave him a footballing lesson. A clanger tonight against Brentford and the bloke could be mentally shot for months. Its also a perfect game to see if Jags and Heitinga can play together in a back 4.

It really cant get any worse or can it ? Manager's are usually judged on their last 6 results and taking in tonight's game that's four lost and two drawn. We are listing badly, morale is shot, the team evidently disharmonious and Moyes incapable of rallying the troops. Moyes will not walk (he is too stubborn) and Kenwright will not sack him for two reasons, it will cost him too much and he is spineless. For anyone who believes Kenwright will take action they need to have their head examined, remember 0-3 at home to Tranmere in the FA Cup and Walter still hung on till the following season when we got routed by Middlesborough.

Tonight was the ideal opportunity to rest as many players as possible and bring in anyone who's been warming the bench and give the fringe players a chance: Neville, Gueye, Coleman; definitely Beckford and Yakubu upfront; try Heitinga and Jagielka as a pair; even Bily in the hole maybe...
They should've been told to go out and play with freedom, but we got a DM special: no balance, no passion, no bottle... just no fucking idea how to win a game and no desire from the players to do so.
I've had enough, the squad and Moyes have peaked and are now in a descent, it's time for change. A new manager and a severe pruning of this group of heartless players. Another major low to add to Moyes's extensive catalogue of disasters!

Whatever industry you are in you cannot afford to stand still or you're overtaken. I fear that is what has happend to David Moyes brand of football. Other teams have sussed us out, and his problems are compounded by creating a squad which does not have a mixture of attributes. We have no pace, no one who can beat a man, very little flair or physical presence, we move the ball slowly and mostly into feet. This results in us having no cutting edge. We struggled towards the end of last season (West Ham and Portsmouth at Home) and that has continued into this season.
Adam, in all fairness to Moyes & the players, nobody could say we haven't been consistent this season. Oh, & you are of course, quite right - we would find Moyes to be utterly irreplaceable if he should ever leave, obviously!

Comendable defence of Moyes and the team Adam Doyle but you are talking past tenths mate, we are in the middle of an abysmal crisis and you are trying to defend the undefensible. Moyes is the Manager the buck stops with him.

I agree Andy I remember that game against West Ham last season at home, it was pathetic, especially given our need for points and their position, AND the fact we went ahead. In retrospect the signs were there from the end of last season - this is deja vu shit aint much fun no more the same sickening feeling as after that West Brom farrago a few years back - actually there's an idea for a new Cohen Brothers film "Farrago" but who to play Moyes and Bill?

But id either go with Sven or Oneill both quality managers in their own right in my mind.

You can't say Sven has done nothing recently despite a career full of trophies, then name Kean who almost took Sunderland down after spending a fortune and then last season with Ipswich being a mare. Team spirit seems conspicuous by it's absence at the moment & if Moyes has lost the players then I struggle to see a way back for him. I'd prefer him to get his act together & turn things 'round as changing managers mid-season would be very disruptive. However, if it's soon clear he can no longer manage effectively I hope he'll do the honourable thing & resign.

I never attack Moyes because he has a dead weight boss in our Bill. But there is no defence for this and he barcodes game. I don't like one up front in any home game but gainst certain teams I can accept his reluctance to have two but the last two games he has not sent a team out to win, just to hope we can pinch a result sorry but if this is now the Everton way something has to change

Each and every pre season the team is not focused come the start of the season, due to the obvious and clear facts they aren't playing decent opposition..where moyse can look at the squad and say shit yeah i need to strengthen here and there. It is something he never seems to do.

I wouldn't mind 4-5-1 if Moyes had built a squad which could play this effectively. The only player that looks comfortable with this formation is Cahill. He has no wide players, but plenty of players who could 'float' and 'support' behind a main striker (Cahill, Arteta, Bily, Pienaar and Osman). So why not play 4-2-3-1, at least you could get Fellaini and Rodwell in the team together holding midfield in front of the back four.
Although I feel Beckford could do more, I am sure that Moyes didn't watch him at Leeds playing on his own, with his back to goal, holding the ball up. Why bring him in and expect (or hope) he can play in a different way.

He was free, regardless whether he could play a bit or not. The irony was, there where two way better strikers ahead of him last season, who scored more goals. So hardly the best player in the league.

Eight years, no trophies, a poor previous campaign and a truly absymal start to what is Moyes eigth season in charge. Yet I get the feeling Moyes isn't even close to being sacked, infact with Kenwright he's closer to a new contract than being shown the exit door.

If you add this to the rumours of Bily being disillusioned and Heitinga throwing a tantrum in training and demanding to be played in defence or not at all, then it suggests Everton's much heralded team spirit may be nearing breaking point. First things first... I'm just as disappointed as all of you with our lame start to the season. 5 games in, 2 points garnered is a crisis whichever way you put it.
However, what I cannot fathom is the number of people that are saying that the solution to everything is to go 4-4-2. Just put 2 strikers up there and we'll convert all our chances and win every game 5-0!
Football as a game has largely evolved over the years and 4-4-2 has been largely figured out and not prevalent any more in the top leagues. Chelsea, Arsenal, Man U, Barca, Real, Inter, etc etc do not play with a conventional 4-4-2. They're not even set up to play that way at home. They have a system of play that revolves around fluid movement and interchangeable attackers.
Where Moyes has failed is not being able to get his attackers close enough to the lone frontmen to support him. Whether this is due to fear, players off-form, or a lack of tactical acumen is a debate best left alone.
What is clear is that we've been dominating possession in games this season and getting a lot of shots on goal. (apart from newcastle game) Our players are lacking the confidence at the moment to finish off some off these flowing moves.
Will this change by automatically sticking 1 more striker on top? I doubt it. But mark my words, when we get a lucky break or two and the goals start flowing, the players confidence will rise and we will see a 10-15 match unbeaten run.

Gerald, it's right what you say about those top sides playing fluid interchanging formations with their attackers. Unfortunately they have players such as Drogba, Anelka, Malouda, Berbatov, Rooney, Villa, Iniesta, Messi, Ronaldo.

Everything just looks wrong at the moment. Bringing Bily on as a sub on the wing against Newcastle didn't and never will work - its not his position. He's a proven 'behind the front man' player. Heitinga shone as a stopper last season and Fellaini as the man in front of the defenders. Now Heitingas playing in midfield and Fellainis the 'behind the front man' man!! There aint that many injuries?? I'm worried at John Daley's (#120) comments - if there's any truth in that, and I hope not, then we have a problem. Another one.
This is how I'd do it, but then managing my pub side into 10th out of 11 this season, I wouldn't read to much into that!

It?s the one ingredient that is sorely missing at the moment. It?s the factor which changes a net-bulging finish to a lame side-foot that trickles into the keeper?s arms (here?s looking at you Mr Osman). Cos when you?re in front of goal and an opportunity presents itself, it doesn?t matter if you were played out of position or not. It doesn?t matter if we have 2 up top or 11 up top. It comes down to composure and technique. Sadly, that seems to be lacking in almost every single player at the moment.

Most of the comments are sound and most of us are in agreement with what the problems are. We do play great football until we get to the final third and then it's the usual bad pass or the evergreen hoofball in the hope Fellaini or Cahill can deal with it.There are very little incisive through balls that the likes of Yakubu or Beckford would prefer and that is why they struggle. Osman is obsessed with receiving the ball(he very rarely wins it,if ever) and passing it 2 yards.
He was the worst player on the field against the Barcodes and yet never got substituted and the kept his place and played the full game last night. Funny how he is supposed to be an attacking midfielder but couldn't take a penalty? This is down to Moyes and he like all managers has to take the rap irrespective of who is available to take over.How many more matches do we give him using the same selection and strategies?

Tom I actually think it was a toss up between Osman and Heitenger being the worst player on Saturday.

Tony you have a point but we need a change at the helm in order to change the mindset of this squad.What happened on Saturday and last night is not a blip and the squad needs inspiration to believe they can win games.We scored first last night and couldn't keep it against a team like Brentford even dodging a penalty but still unable to finish the job.This is a warning shot for Kenwright and if he doesn't act on this in some way then it's going to remain a dire season.

The meaning of a blip is that it is out of the ordinary and it is. Last season there were only 4 teams who lost less games than us and therefore it is a blip, not the norm.

I'd actually go with the majority of the team that played Newcastle on Saturday, with a few changes, this would give players who haven't played much ie; Billy and Yak some much needed game time whilst also giving the others a chance to boost their confidence as early as possible.
The team I'd go with is:
Howard Neville Jagielka Distin Baines Bily Fellaini Arteta Gueye Osman (assuming Cahill is still out) Yak Bench: Mucha, Hibbert, Heitinga, Gueye, Beckford, Coleman, BarkleyCOYB
