Moyes prepares to sell Silva

01/02/2012 | Comments (7)
Everton could cash in on young Portuguese striker Joao Silva, with clubs in Romania apparently interested in landing him before their transfer deadline in mid-February.

According to the Mail, Silva was recalled from his loan at Vitoria Setubal on Tuesday where he scored three goals in 16 appearances. His opportunities at Goodison Park look slim with a number of strikers jostling for position at first-team level.

Otelul Galati and FC Cluj are apparently showing interest in Silva and by recalling him from Portgual, Moyes may be preparing to sell him on.

If we can get our money back we'd be doing well. Not a good acquisition!

How do you know he wasn't a good acquisition?

What a strange question Mick!

750k - no games, no goals. I think that fits the criteria for being considered a poor acquisition!

Saw this guy play in the pre-season friendly against Melbourne Heart. Looked out of his depth even then to be honest. Like a lost lamb. On hindsight, maybe he needed a few games under his belt (FA/League Cups?) but nevertheless, it's probably best we cut our losses. Doubt we'll get our money back on this one though.

When we fish in the cheaper areas - and we have to, there is little choice - some will come good, some not.

If it takes two signings of £500k to get a Coleman, that is fine by me.

Many young players will appear far from the finished product but to say he "wouldn't have made it" is being simplistic.

Look at the likes of Ruddy and Jutkiewicz. Players deemed surplus to requirements who have proven they may have provided Everton something had we held on to them. Jutkiewicz in particular drew a few negative comments during his short tenure at Everton.

Roberto is correct in that speculating on young players is not all about ability, if the players get a break into the first team (eg Coleman and Duffy) this may accelerate their development while injuries (Vaughan) and other factors such as too much competition for their position may hinder or hold the player's progression back. I would argue that both Garbutt and Bidwell may move on, not because they won't prove to be great players but that Baines is not injury prone and the first name on the team sheet.

Without knowing the details, commenting on Joao Silva's situation is merely idle speculation.

I think I see your point Vivek.

However I think there is a vast difference between forwards and other players in this category.

Keepers & defenders aren't the type of positions that can be rotated and given a few minutes run out.

Ruddy looked when I saw him for the blues (not much to be fair) a reasonable player but was never going to oust Tim Howard. Therefore it was right to let him leave.

Forwards however do get on for a few minutes here and there and get the chance to make a big impression quickly.

Jose Baxter for one was given that type of chance on Tuesday and looked lost.
