Chasing a Claret and Blue Jay

23/05/2012 | Comments (12)
Everton are said to be seriously interested in luring Jay Rodriguez to Goodison Park — but won't be able to finance a big money move for the striker until they sell.

Reports from Merseyside over the past 24 hours had suggested the Toffees have had a £6.5million bid accepted for the Turf Moor favourite but that is understood to be premature.

The Lancashire Telegraph understands Everton are big admirers of the Burnley hot shot but need to bring cash into the club before they can make their move.

Even if they were able to finance a move, it is believed they would be reluctant to match Burnley's £8million valuation of the 22-year-old.

I don't know too much about this guy. Is he really worth £6.5m? What sort of striker is he, a predator or somebody who can play behind Jelavic?

According to Wikipedia he is now a Cardiff player after they offered £5.5m for him today, so it must be true.

Whenever a young promising player is linked to our club with the kind of valuation being mentioned, I think to myself, he should get some games at that price and not fade into the background like so many other £1m to £2m young players and loanees and at least it will reduce the amount of times I have to watch Anichebe or Cahill trying to wing it as strikers...

But, on the other hand, I think £6m is £6m we haven't got and Moyes's priority will probably be Pienaar and second to that, going by his record, will propably be a defender or some sort of defensive midfield (Jack of all trades and master of none), therefore it won't happen anyway.

If it did happen, it would be unusual for Moyes but quite a positive move as far as I'm concerned.

Chances of us paying £6.5m for anyone is slim; for an unproven youngster, they are non-existent.

I've seen him play for Burnley a couple of times. I'm not sure but I think he came through thier youth system. He's an unaffected local lad so defo fits the Moyes type (Osman & Hibbert). But and this is the but, he's not a premership player, on saying that he can't be worse than most strikers at the club, but if we are trying to move forward it's a no no. Victor Moyes would be a much better option.

I can see Davey making Felli`s move forward a permanance next season with Rodwell slotting in behind him.Cahill will then be used `off the bench`.
I`d be amazed if there was big money spent on a striker as next is the season that the likes of Anichebe,Velios and McElny will be expected to come into their own.

On Anichebe, you cannot progress when your injured. Constantly injured.

I think Anichebe is limited, but does have various qualities that could bring him and us relative success if he stayed fit. He could be a handy squad player and he give us a couple of options, up front and right. But this all depends on staying fit and, rather like James Vaughan and now Rodwell, he desperately needs some football.

Moyes threw him back in very quickly when he was deemed fit for selection this year, I seem to remember him throwing him left hand side against Blackburn at home. This didn't do Anichebe any favours whatsoever as he was barely fit.

A run without injuries, a pre-season and just training every week would help him.

Being available to play every week, fitness, developing your game and the confidence that comes with that have all been lost to him and he's been trying to give his career a go in that context. You need to be fully fit to be at your best, and in fairness I would say he has rarely had the opportunity to be at his best.

Ultimately, if he can stay fit think he could have a very good Championship career. He could bag a load there. Bearing in mind the James Vaughan and Beckford fees, and Beckford was 28, we could always get between £2-5 million off a Championship side for Anichebe depending on how he is doing.

I think the main issue people have is, could we get someone in who could help us more for the same level of contract/fee he would generate? Maybe we could.

Moyes placed a lot of faith in Anichebe with the deal he was awarded. I think Anichebe may get this year to stay injury free, get his career up and running and provide value for his contract. So far injuries have left him unable to do this. If it doesn't happen it may be time to call it quits.
