Everton eye Lyon fullback

23/05/2012 | Comments (25)
Delivering the news as if Leighton Baines's move to Old Trafford is a certainty, talkSPORT claim that David Moyes is tracking Lyon fullback Aly Cissokho as his replacement.

The French international is apparently valued around £6m but is also wanted by Napoli, Roma and Newcastle, though the report suggests that the 24-year-old wants to move to the Premier League.

If EFC sell Baines and buy two or three lesser squad members, then it will show a total lack of ambition... AGAIN!!! Would any top club sell their best English asset?? We must hang on to Jags and Baines and build around them.

Foreign players are basically mercenaries and have no particular affection for any Premier League club unless they have been there for yonks, eg, Drogba... but he is earning top dollar as is Van Persie, Henry before him, Silva and Tevez at City etc etc etc.
I spent over 25 years working around the Middle East and was exactly the same...

Top English players must be kept and foreign players will tend to come and go. Despite all the talk of loyalty, they will want to move for more money if they are offered it. I can't say I blame any player wanting to play for a top team with realistic chances of winning trophies and caps for their country... but, whilst we have Baines on a long contract, we must keep him and sell the older players to make way for younger players.

Our defence is one of the best around; we need to try to keep it together and try to strengthen the squad ? not weaken it. Squandering the pittance we have on inferior players must stop... I'm really glad that we are rid of McFadden and Hahnemann.

FFS, do not buy Richardson ? he is a waste of money that could be used better

Or a total lack of money. People seem to confuse the two.

I believe someone significant will go this year, ie one of Baines, Heitinga, Jags, Felli. Selling one will probably be required in order to get Pienaar and a back-up striker. Sell more than one is not necessary so would be a lack of ambition.

Heck! Heck!

What about Tim Howard, Tim Cahill, Johnny Heitinga, Sylvain Distain, and Jelavic whose been here less than a year! Jelavic just said that he'll be around next year too. Sweet. Landon Donavan said he wants his third appearance at EFC!

Cissokho is quality. Pretty sure he will be going to a club with Champions league football. Or with plenty of cash. Rules us out then.

Wayne Rooney, Michael Ball, Francis Jeffers, Dan Gosling come to mind... all home grown & local talents who showed plenty of affection to EFC!!!

"Foreign players are basically mercenaries and have no particular affection for any Premier League club unless they have been there for yonks" - Fucken eh? The mercenaries that have been at a club for "yonks"...scratches head ...

When you say foreign players, does that include the Welsh, Scottish and Irish?, as they are all at it.......here's a little secret too.....so are the English......cough...Scot Parker....couch etc

By "Foreign" you must actually mean "Footballer"

Absolute rubbish Terry...seriously? Stinks of misplaced nationalism, even jingoism. Not only those mentioned by Sur, but a host of others come to mind. What did Cashley say again? almost swerved off the road because of wages offered? It's also very interesting that you mention Drogba, who spends alot of time and money in helping those who need it in Africa and especially the Ivory Coast. More than the large majority of English players, with occasional charity apperances and less occasional ostentatious or immoral stunts.

Quality player. Would be perfect replacement for Baines if it came to that. Doubt he would come here though madrid and barca were sniffing around him last year

Yeah, United have been linked as well, and Arsenal in the past. Lyon have had a poor season, but unfortunately we would be a bit of a regression.

I've heard £12M quoted for baines. I would hope given his nationality, age, character and ability we could get about twice that if it came to it.

You'd also hope that given our lack of cover there, Moyes would only sell him for top whack to enable him to be sure he could get 2 left backs in, plus perhaps one or two elsewhere.

As for his replacement - if it came to that -, we have two potentially half-decent left backs in the youth/reserves, so I'd hope one of those would at least be given an opportunity to see if they can step up.

Pity Moyes doesn't try to blood these youngsters a bit more in the last 5 or 10 minutes of a game to see if they can cope. Putting on the likes of Straq and McFadden in the last game of the season instead of one of our youth players is a missed opportunity I think.

Well plenty of top clubs sell their best assets and reinvest the money...In fact most of them do (Utd with Ronaldo - theyre still spending the money!)

Felliani and Baines are undoubtedly are two most valuable assets ...and I am afraid if we can get twenty million for Baines then youve much more chance of picking up a decent left back and having some spare than selling Fellaini...we will struggle to replace him with anyone of equal quailty.

Agreed, Fellaini is irreplaceable for us, we need to build around him.

We can't afford to pay a full back top dollar so someone like Baines will always have a max shelf life at Everton as his stock rises.

I'd back Moyesie to replace him but we need Man City sniffing around to get top dollar.

It's simple: we NEED to keep hold of our best players to push on in the present!!
Baines loves it at Everton and should be convinced to stay here and the in-house or Banks' vultures should stop circling above the carcass which is fast becoming 'The Dreams' of all Evertonians!

All the Bollocks of replacing him with this player or that.... as has been pointed out, with some players, you can't buy loyalty, even when it is expected, there are the dopes who say "You can't blame them, they want this as well" pfff.

Baines has given us that and should see that he should stay. If HE wants out then fair enough (I'll blame Rooney) but don't let him leave if he doesn't really want to go ? or any of our other top boys!

It is our business to invest in assets (we look 24/7 for new investment remember?), redevelop the asset, and then sell for profit.

I want a left back that can actually defend, and develop the wide players to cross properly.

So get real ? Fellaini and Baines hand in transfer requests and head off to City, Utd or Chelsea. Then we get the best deals we can for them.

I'm sure we can get replacements for these guys. It's not like Fellaini has a killer pass, can take an in-swinging freekick and score a bag full of goals. Let's be honest, he's good at what he does but not irreplaceable.

Quite frankly, if we can put £30M on the table, there must be some useful players out there and most of them will be on show in the next few weeks. Moyes can pick up good players ? he proved it over the years. There are a lot of fringe players with potential and at Everton they can realize that potential because we can't afford £20M players, £3-6M being our limit.

Would we spend £35M on a Carroll or £50M on a Torres, even if we had the money? I somehow think Moyes would prefer to build his team of workhorses and defense-minded players before adding any flair players that cost a bit.

Fellaini made the most passes of any EFC player and was the 2nd most effective tackler in the league behind Cabaye of Newcastle. His disciplinary record over the final 22 games of the season was just 2 bookings... this is who we should build the team around.

Anto #389 thank you! Your inclusion of Andy Carroll in a paragraph about "flair players that cost a bit" has made my day.

If Chelski are willing to release the likes of Bosingwa and Kalou, this presumably means that they are available to sign without a fee being involved.... Kalou in particular I have always liked. Surely even we can go for proven players like these if it's their wage alone we need to fund?

I don't believe that it is so hard to understand? Everton are seen as a step backwards to players who have already been at a 'TOP' Club! So we only have the choice of players who want to prove themselves and make it in this league so it's a gamble! One that doesn't usually pay off...

Anyway, what exactly is going on with EFC's finances if we consistently sell a player at their peak or right under the manager's nose at the death of the window?? JOKE!!! I'm not for it, I am for asking the board questions for the treadmill and marking time on the the debts and bad decisions which continually hold back the progression of EFC!!!

If he was affordable, Kalou would be a great signing. However, players like him seem to be reluctant to take cuts in wages and would rather earn decent money warming the bench of a "big" club rather than wanting to play every week and prove to themselves they can still do the job! Pity.

No way Kalou will end up here. Pointless.

Bosingwa on the other might be worth a punt. Certainly knows how to attack.

What does 'players like him' mean. All players are reluctant to take a cut in wages, in fact all people are reluctant to take a cut in wages.. I am, arent you?

Kalou would be a good signing for Eveon's because he can play on either side or up front.. Ideal.
