The Rumour Mill

Poyet bust-up could see him quitting

17/05/2013 | Comments (48)
The papers have erupted with yet more speculation about Gus Poyet becoming the next Everton manager on the back of his massive falling out with the Brighton Chairman, who has banned him and his coaching team from the club.

The Mail claims that Gus Poyet has thrown his hat into the ring for the Everton job after admitting he may have taken Brighton as far as he can after their promotion bid came to an end.

Apparently he told his players he may be quitting, and that has caused his Chairman Tony Bloom to ban him and two other coaches from the club pending an inquiry. Poyet's contract with Brighton runs through 2016.

Not for me thanks...

No thanks. Don't like his attitude.

Poyet`s failure to secure automatic promotion and come up short in the play-offs replicates Moyes` record at Preston.
And he will be cheap.
Not for me,though.

No thanks I think holloway is a better manager than Poyet.

In the real world his behaviour would bar him from the job at our Club and any other with an ounce of sense, but then again Football is in a world of its own and look who runs our Club.

If that's what's happened, it doesn't reassure me. Not interested in him (until he's appointed).

Mmm,don't know. Strong personality and he's obviously ambitious, reminds me of Moyes. Similar record to Moyes when he came to the club. Whoever we get it will be a lottery ticket but I think he would be an interesting appointment.

Poyet gets suspended for waiting see to what the club's plans are before deciding whether to stay or not, Moyes did a similar thing and got a box of chocolates and a new £6m deal with Utd. Eh?

To appoint poyet would suggest to me that we have made no progress in the last decade whereas I feel we have. I would like someone who has managed successfully in a top flight league and possibly in European competition too.

Poyet is like an unproven Martinez (if such a thing can exist). But if he gets sacked:

he'll be cheap + no compo to Brighton = Kenwright spunking himself

I liked the sound of Poyet at first, but I have to say I agree with Sam Hoare. The Everton job should be able to attract a manager who has already managed at the top level, be it this country or another decent European one. In Poyet, we have someone who was in a very similar position to Moyes, somebody who failed to get their team promoted, but got Premier league anyway (although Moyes did stick around for more than one shot at it). Moyes has left a good first team that has comfortably managed top 6 in the league this year, and we need somebody to come in who believes they can better that, and in my mind, that means we need a winner.

Liam (789), What has got Bill written all over it?

He makes errors that for sure, but the honesty in dealing with other clubs in not in question. Don't take my word for it ask Dave Whelan at Wigan.

Would you like to make the decision he will shortly have to make, knowing that no matter who he appoints he is going to get stick and that includes bringing Sir Alex out of retirement. or for that matter the outgoing Pope.

Poyet??....Martinez??....Lennon??

It just makes my view on Big Dunc and King Kev Sheedy being appointed.
Ok... so both are inexperienced but then so are the above mentioned.

All three of the managers mentioned above have only been managing five minutes, so in that case Dunc and Sheeds should be given a chance, and also Sheeds was assistant at Tranmere and manages our youth team alongside Dunc so their already used to working with each other and done a sterling job with the youth team.

Also, no compensation would be needed and both would demand reasonable wages unlike other managers.

So to summarise... if we are continually linked with unproven, inexperienced managers then I would rather keep the job inhouse and give it to them two as we would be no worse off.

The Brighton chairman, seemingly, thinks he's been tapped up. If that's the case then Poyet won't get sacked, he has a £2.4m buyout clause in his contract. Their chairman would have to be extremely principled and off his rocker to let that kind of money go.

Don't be fooled by his fake credentials and foreign name. Brighton are a media darling club and he did choke in a big game against their nearest rivals (it was a derby, apparently). Let's aim higher eh?

I don't want Poyet, Martinez, Klopp, Mourinho, ancellotti etc.....in fact, I don't want any of them. They are not good enough for EFC, stats will show that. BK should try and get the Moyesiah back as he was the only one who could run our once great club. All these other managers are overrated, untrustworthy, unproven etc...

Derek —"What has got Bill written all over it?"

A cheap fix (no buy out clause), low salary and hope for the best. The same as he did with Moyes where he got lucky (certainly initially anyway).

I doubt his ability to pull a similar rabbit out of the hat and in my view he must go for experience and pedigree.

Liam, I think you are being a bit hard there in that one of the best decisions he has made was more luck than judgement.

But moving on as defending a Kenwright decision on Tofeeweb is a waste of time. I agree with you that we need experience, pedigree and loyalty. If the first two are not hard enough the third will be nigh on impossible in the current climate.

This guy certainly looks too impulsive for my taste.

As for having to choose someone with pedigree, don't forget where Hpward Kendall as when Everton appointed him: at Blackburn in the old Second Division.

Poyet would please / appease more than Pip, Stubbsy etc.

As for Kenwright's good reputation (mentioned above), I think Leroy Fer's club would have a thing or two say about the comedy transfer farce that was launched last minute to quieten down the masses at their expense & probably to the detriment of their dressing room & team.

Or was it the other player? There was little intent with either anyway.

Derek,

Walter Smith told Billy to hire Moyes. He didn't scout Moyes himself.

Every other decision he's made for this club has not been in its interests.

I too would like to see a big name manager being appointed who will take Everton forward. Unfortunately such an individual would want the money to buy players circa £10 million+ and the wages to go with it.

Whatever you think of David Moyes he has had to manage on a shoestring budget and done well with the resources available.

Personally I feel whatever the heart says the head will have to be rationale.

That either means appointing from within: Duncan Ferguson, Phil Neville etc or taking a punt on a manager such as Martinez or Poyet who is not the finished article.

Rationally Poyet has done well at Leeds, Swindon and Brighton. He has worked well on a budget and is clearly looking for a step up. The football played has been attractive and given the players at Goodison now and allowing for two or three new players (we are unlikely to get more) he might just bring a certain more expanse to our game and allow us to kick on.

The forums either want change or more of the same. I suspect if David Moyes had taken a few more risks in certain games rather than being cautious we might just have fulfilled the potential and the club might just have had an FA Cup win or two and a go in Europe.

Laudrup needs a second season for me. Martinez would have us playing nice stuff but would be going backwards down the table. Internally nobody has had the opportunity, others will cost more.

Poyet seems logical but we might be looking for a manager in two years if things go well.....

Kenwright's judgement call was Megson.

Poyet, no thanks. He wouldnt last until Xmas. Too volatile and vocal and would fall out with Kenwright . we would lose the only quality we have left as a once great club and that is respect.

Big Dunc- come on are you having a laugh. Imagine our disciplinary record and his press interviews and media dealings. Theres more to management than intimidation of players .

Hiddink /Riikaard and the like wouldnt touch us with a barge pole so lets get real.

Internal- give Alan Stubbs a go.
External - Martinez.

They may not be perfect but at least they are realistic. Martinez as manager with Stubbs as assistant to work on defensive qualities as this is seen as a weakness with Martinez.

The hot rumour from Brendan Rodgers's home village, Carnlough, is that it's Lennon for Everton. The local bookie has stopped taking bets on him. The source of the rumour: BR's brother, the same who 'predicted' BR for the Shite job. That too led to a run on the unfortunate bookie. Maybe the brother was a bit closer to the 'knowledge' on that occasion. Hope so, not Lennon ... PLEASE.

The best manager option of all I have heard about is Vitor Perreira.
He has run a Club that has much more experience than Everton out in Europe.
He could be a brilliant choise for Everton.

Looks like it will be from within. Moyes said today the chairman will ask for his advice and Moyes will have no hesitation recommending any of our backroom staff or Pip. Kenwright has said Moyes work won't go to waste and you can't always start with a clean slate. You have to have someone who knows the club and it's restraints (added Moyes). He did seem to single out Dunc and Stubbs.............the saga goes on.............

Karl (862), I'm with you on that. I think Gary Speed would certainly be our manager in waiting by now if life hadn't kicked him so hard.

Such a shame, he had it all. Like that Richard Corey song by Simon & Garfunkle (Van Morrison sung it better).

Reading this, and what Kenwright had to say at the awards bash, I really wouldn't be surprised now if we appoint within.

I'd imagine it'll be Stubbs as boss with one from either Neville, Weir, Irvine or Big Dunc as his No.2, IF Kenwright goes ahead and appoints from within to try and keep Moyesie's work ongoing.

Should we not try for a foreign manager from either spain, portugal or germany who have scouts and contacts in a good european league who could possibly unearth quality young players for cheap prices a la michu at swansea? Hire a scottish manager and we'll get dundee utd 'stars'. Hire a championship manager and we'll pay over the odds for english players.

Karl (862) & John (042)

Maybe the chants of Gary, Gary, Gary Shithouse Speed may have also deep down had something to do with it.

Football and his family lost a good man. Hopefully food for thought before we give someone else it both barrels in the future.

Anyone seen Vicente's comments about Poyet today? Granted he was released by him and is probably bitter, but he claims he is the worst man he has ever met in football, a massive egotist and extremely selfish. He also said Poyet openly mocks players in training.

Is this the man we want? Bad enough he defends Luis Cannibal anytime he does something daft.

Ross Edwards

Alex, if you think Poyet is egoistic and selfish, you should have heard what the Newcastle and Terek Grozny players said about Gullit.
