Everton will face Leeds United at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Monday, bolstered by the win against Aston Villa as well as the return of several key players.

The Toffees will also be desperate to make amends after suffering a 1-0 loss to Daniel Farke’s side at Elland Road in their first fixture of the season. They will head into this game with confidence, knowing that three points here will help them close the gap to the top four to just a single point.

A depleted and stuttering Everton side secured a brilliant 1-0 victory on the road against third-placed Aston Villa the last time around. Unai Emery’s side had won 11 games on the bounce across all competitions before facing the Blues. Thierno Barry’s near-post chip close to the hour mark secured the side’s first win of 2026. It also lifted the Toffees into the top half of the standings, with only four points separating them and the top four.

Last week has been quite chaotic for the club. Everton have welcomed back Iliman Ndiaye and Idrissa Gana Gueye following their victorious AFCON campaign with Senegal, but have lost Jack Grealish for potentially the remainder of the season with a foot injury.

Jarrad Branthwaite, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Charly Alcaraz have also resumed training with the group, but Monday’s fixture against Leeds United could be deemed too soon for a return.

While Everton’s away form has been brilliant - they have won four and lost just one of their last seven contests - their recent record at Hill Dickinson Stadium leaves a lot to be desired, having lost three and drawn one of their last four games at the waterfront venue.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s return to Merseyside will be an interesting subplot. Calvert-Lewin, who left the club after nine years this summer, has scored nine goals for the Yorkshire-based outfit this season.

Leeds United overcame their four-game winless streak with a 1-0 win over Fulham last Saturday, after Lukas Nmecha scored in injury time. They are currently 16th in the league table and haven’t won in the league since their 4-1 triumph over Crystal Palace in December.

Everton vs Leeds United - Team News and Predicted Starting XI

Everton Team News

Iliman Ndiaye and Idrissa Gana Gueye received a hero’s welcome at Finch Farm after winning the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. The pair only returned to training on Friday, with head coach David Moyes stating that they will need to undergo a medical assessment in order to determine their availability for this clash.

However, Jack Grealish’s stress fracture in his foot comes as a crushing blow to the side. The Manchester loanee is expected to be out for several months and could potentially miss the remainder of the season.

The suspended Michael Keane will also miss this clash. Although Branthwaite, Dewsbury-Hall and Alcaraz have returned to full training, it remains to be seen whether they will be able to make the matchday squad for this game. Tim Iroegbunam, however, remains out with an unspecified injury.

Everton’s predicted starting XI: Jordan Pickford (GK), Nathan Patterson, James Tarkowski, Jake O’Brien, Vitalii Mykolenko, James Garner, Harrison Armstrong, Merlin Rohl, Dwight McNeil, Thierno Barry, Iliman Ndiaye.

Looking forward to this.

Apparently Tarkowski and O'Brien will be pushing up to the half way line in Keane's absence...

It won't be the half-way line, Darren. If anyone has suggested that, they are in for a disappointment.

It will be a higher line though.

Results going our way at half time. We could go up three places I think if they stay that way. And after such an encouraging win at Villa we'll not blow the chance against lowly Leeds. Will we ?

Away from The Stones for a minute Darren.

I read your recent debate,a lot of it anyway,on the depth we play when Keane and Tarkowski partner up,i agreed with the majority of it.

Keane is the slowest turning centre half in the Prem so easy to see why that happens.

Do you not consider we will play even 1 metre higher with a much faster centre half partnering Tarkowski?

I don't even think Keane is the slowest turning center half at the club.

Getting my crystal ball out. I can see a few of the Irish posters on here putting a tape measure to their screens and peering through their green tinted glasses and declaring "Look. We are playing at least 15 yards higher. Jake HAS made Tarks faster !!!"

If Jake O'Brien thinks he is going to get Tarkowski away from his own area. He may need a bit more than his own pace to do it.

A couple of wild horses might help

Why is it teams continue to live dangerously in their own third with excessive idiotic passing. The Gunners just paid the penalty by gifting Manure a goal.

It sends a message to all weaker teams who practice this method if Arsenal can come unstuck other teams are sure to get punished and they do.

Sometimes the big hoof clearance is the best option.

Totally agree Tom (14) - this passing within and around your own area is farcical - get rid of these stupid goal kick rules and let the goalie punt it short or long (into the middle or opposite half - enough of these suicidal defensive moves

We wuz robbed v Leeds opening weekend, that pen never gets given before or since. Not that we were good but we should have had a point anyway. We've not been good at home recently to put it mildly, it's time to turn that around.

Too much pain and too much sorrow

Leeds might feel the same tomorrow

Raymond Fox

Another flawed play is from keepers, they used to catch balls once upon a time not all this parrying out to incoming forwards.

I get it might be the best way in some circumstances but not all the time.

I've lost confidence in us getting a result at home, Moyes needs to tell the players to go all out for it, because we play too cautious and do neither one thing or the other.

Peter @21, didn't see that but I'll take your word for it, I watched Villa beat the skunks earlier. Seen plenty similar not given though (and rightfully so).

We need to string a few results together and tomorrow is the perfect opportunity to start doing that after last weekends excellent win.

I've just put the highlights of that game on to see if that was true Peter@21, and like I keep saying, we all see a different game!

It was nothing like the penalty awarded against Tarkowski, imo, and watching this Arsenal v Man Utd game, it looks like the United players are trying to outdo each other with the quality of their goals.

As a long serving Irish toffee, I don't think Jake is the player that everybody seems to think. So far so good but I predict before long if he commits another brain fart like he did against Arsenal, the tide won’t be long turning against him. I hope I'm wrong but I do get depressed with his continuous square passing to Tarks or back to Pickford and rarely see a pass to midfield or our wide men. To give Keane his due he does have a forward pass in his game.

Mark 12, Ian 20. Why are you dropping Rohl after the his performance in the Villa game. It was not long ago that there was an outcry on TW after the away win against Forest when the team was changed. Now we are in one case bringing in Aznou instead of Rohl, why because of a brief cameo against Sunderland. We have no idea if he can retain the ball in attack or is a competent defender so this game is not the place to take such risk. As a sub for McNeil maybe but certainly not instead of Rohl.

Similarly dropping him for Gana who has just come back from AFCON, played the full 120 minutes in the final and is what 36 years of age. I thought we were supposed to try and give the new guys an opportunity to fit into the team and plan for the long term especially if we see that they take the opportunity when given to them. Rohl was excellet against Villa so replacing Rohl with Gana is a retrograde step.

Going to the game tomorrow. First time at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

I generally only make it to one game a season, so went with Seat Unique as at the start of the season it looked like it was much the same price as Forever Blue plus the ticket and guaranteed a seat.

Has anyone used them before and know how the £10 food and drink voucher works? There's a separate QR code for the programme but not for food...

So use it early when you get there, not joking unfortunately.

Over the years I've read stuff like: "This is a 6-pointer... we've got a run of 5 'winnable' games coming up... 3 points tomorrow will see us leapfrog whoever... puts us in the European places" -- only for 19 times out of 20 to bottle a defeat (or draw) from the very Jaws of Victory.

Such is the state of the Premier League that any sort of by the numbers, workmanlike home performance will shoot you up the table... not a foregone conclusion..

I've nothing against Calvert-Lewin, but I have a deep -- Cloughesque -- dislike of Leeds Utd (dirty dirty Leeds). It's not just Revie and all that, which would be enough on its own.

No, the icing on the cake is the saying: "By their friends shall ye know them". All through the 70s, Liverpool and Leeds fans would organise away trips to each other's social clubs, like it was a family reunion.

So just this once Don't 'kin Bottle it! I don't care about Europe and the Thursday Cup, we don't have the depth of squad... and the thought of being 3 points off the Champions League places is just laughable.

I just don't like 'kin Leeds.

More in hope than expectation - 'Over to you, Moyes'

Neil, I'm not being serious - just playing the higher line game and putting O'Brien and Tarkowski in midfield. Obviously a shite and feeble attempt...

Rohl deserves another go and no way is Moyes going to play Aznou.

I had originally logged into the Premier package with Seat Unique to book the package with the £10 voucher but saw a full meal package for £50 more so went with that as my other half was travelling with me. So short answer is I don’t know but I presume you order something to eat and as it is likely to cost more than £10 you pay with the vouch and top the balance.

Entering a European competition at this stage of the squad rebuild could end up taking us backwards. Whilst great for the initial prestige, the squad isn’t big enough to cope with the extra games. I like the idea of finishing as high in the league as possible but the ramifications could be harmful. I’d be happy to be proven wrong. The club would attract better players though. Pros and cons.

If I was a betting man I'd put money on a DCL hat-trick.

A 03:00 kick off here means I can acoid watching it in my Leeds mate's bar with his ex-villain mates. Mind there's plenty of Scouse Blues that get in there as well so it also avoids the potential for a bit of bovver.

I'm sure I'll be subjected to the replay if they win though.

Neil.

I find Jake O'Brien very easy to like. He wouldnt be a candidate for my player of the season so far, but he would be a strong candidate for "clubman" of the year. Please don't mistake that for a backhanded compliment. I think they are equally important.

I don't believe there are many top class full backs around today. It's such a specialised position. Some defend well, Some support the midfield well, some are particularly good at overlapping and getting good service in. Few excel at everything. In fact I cant think of one.

Being built like a basket ball player hasnt helped O'Brien in his efforts to "fill in" at full back. A tricky winger should be able to expose that. But to his eternal credit, not many have been able to do it O'Brien's problems only really begin when he is, unreasonably IMO, expected to be creative.

You point out his "brain farts" and you are right to do so, but very few defenders go through a season without having them - I think we are all delighting in watch St Virgil unravel.

I know people like to compare Moyes to Dyche, but the only real difference I see is that, besides having better players, Moyes has crucially recognised the steel and stronger mentality Jake brings to the team. If an upturn in results can traced back to Moyes's appointment. Then it can also be traced back to the introduction of big Jake. If any player has earned a shot at a run in his favoured position, it has to be him. AND unlike the other two. He has the potential to improve.

My problem with posts about O'brien. Is this oft repeated claim that he will drag Tarkowski up the pitch. He wont. I have seen too many games where the fastest man at the club (Branthwaite) has failed to drag him out of his comfort zone. Big Jake has no chance.

Tarkowski will call the line from which we defend.

I'm really looking forward to what could be seen as a TW match up tonight. The Irish Bobby Moore up against the "Div 1 striker at best". I expect Leeds to be far more direct than Villa.

I'd snatch your hand of for a win right now

John Collins
43 Posted 26/01/2026 at 08:26:21
Morning Darren,

That's a fair post I reckon,pretty much agree.

I am not suggesting the back four push to the half way line, far from it,that would expose us.

I posted we will play higher, even if its only 10 yards.

Brian Harrison
44 Posted 26/01/2026 at 10:36:37
There are no easy games in the Premier league and tonight will be no different, but we need to take advantage of a brilliant result against one of the inform teams last week. Hopefully Ndaiye will start, not sure if Gana will start as well but great to have them both back. Interesting to hear Moyes saying Barry has become a lot more vocal on the training ground this week, obviously his 3 goals in 4 games have given him confidence. Might also see Branthwaite on the bench, and just a bit early for KDH to make the bench I think. A win tonight would push us into a challenge for a European competition. I know many have said this squad isn't good enough to cope with European football without it effecting our league position. But remember Moyes saying we had missed some of our transfer targets because we couldnt offer them European football.
Ian Wilkins
45 Posted 26/01/2026 at 10:53:31
We have to ‘make the game’ tonight which is far more difficult for us than conceding possession and picking teams off.

We have tended to come unstuck when this is the case.

That said, Leeds are not a possession based team either, bit more direct. Could make for a physical encounter. Set pieces important.

Three points moves us up the table, knocking on the European places, I hope we have the ambition to chase it.

Good post Darren @ 42, Its a good job we have had O'Brien in the squad. He has been one of our better signings and him and Branthwaite are our future centre halfs for the next number of years- if we can keep them here, that is!

The betting is 6/4 Everton, 15/8 Leeds, 2/1 a Draw. you can get better odds if you fish around.

That would appear to be a good price for us but its taking into account our dismal home record. I'm hoping for the best but its hard to be confident.

Unless otherwise enforced through injury, the only change should be Ndiaye for Grealish.

No reason to change a winning side.

Kevin Molloy
49 Posted 26/01/2026 at 12:04:03
it's not just us, teams across the board are finding it more difficult to make home advantage count. All four games yesterday were away victories. I suspect it may have to do with the way teams now play our from the back, away teams know the pitch is big enough for them to ping it around in their own penalty area all game as long as they are comfortable on the ball. Making the goalie another passer is what seems to have tipped the balance. So suddenly the home crowd can become more of a hindrance than an advantage if they see the other team holding onto the ball for extended periods.

that said, I'll be a bit gutted if we don't stuff these.

I hope the only change tonight is Ndiaye for the injured Grealish, our midfield were excellent against Villa, so Moyes should put Gueye on the bench, and not change things, and would be a great boost if Branthwaite and KDH also make the bench.
Jimmy Carr
52 Posted 26/01/2026 at 13:33:40
I would not be surprised if both Gueye and Ndiaye failed to start. I’d be disappointed but let’s wait and see. We’re only tipping Ndiaye to start because he’s a shoo-in and Grealish is out. Moyes may consider both players unable to complete the full 90/100 minutes.
Kevin Molloy
53 Posted 26/01/2026 at 13:42:24
if they're both fit I'd expect both to come back in with Rohl dropping out, and also Keane back in. I'm not sure Rohl is suited yet to the expectation levels of BMD and doing good things with the ball, and Moyes clearly does not fancy Patterson as fullback in terms of defensive cover.

Ian #45 "Three points moves us up the table, knocking on the European places, I hope we have the ambition to chase it."

But we're being told by the CEO not to expect any players to improve us in the transfer window and kick us on into Europe 'cos we don't have the players to cope with the extra fixtures. And don't forget the £40 million black hole that potential transfer money went into (quotes Judie Ormond "pay yourself first).

So Moyes has probably been told 'don't get too ambitious with this Europe talk Davey, KITNAP will do us just fine for the rest of the season'

I think we will have a little too much for Leeds tonight, also its been a while since we put in a really good and convincing performance at home.

Also I hope the crowd treat DCL with respect whether he scores against us or not.

Lets prove we are not like the Trent haters who were once on the other side of the park to us.

Yes he obviously was not happy with what contract we offered but don't forget the goal against Palace that kept us up and his joy in the crowd after.

Lets show some class, plus a good win of course.

Mike Hayes, given that Keane is still suspended who plays right back if Patterson isn't selected?

I'm hoping your wrong and the only change from the Villa game is Ndiaye straight in for Grealish.

Maybe Gana in for Rohl but I hope not, personally.

Moyes has confirmed Armstrong goes back to PNE but I hope he gives him another start tonight.

Ian Wilkins
60 Posted 26/01/2026 at 15:05:11
Eric &56, agree with your points entirely, and that was my sentiment really, I think our level of ambition this season is consolidation and mid table security.

For many that’s fine. Fair enough.

We’d spend now I think if we wanted to push hard for Europe ( and what an opportunity given the tightness of the league this year), knowing we’d have to spend again in Summer to add depth to the squad.

I don’t think that’s the TFG plan, Kinnear confirmed as much.

Well carry on as we are, with some players coming back, win some lose some, probably send Armstrong back to Preston, as Moyes seems desperate to do, finish mid table.

Jimmy Carr
61 Posted 26/01/2026 at 15:26:21
If TFG are content with mid-table they are at odds with Moyes’s stated ambitions. He’s talked about Everton qualifying for Europe at every press conference I’ve watched this season.

European qualification brings in extra revenue for the ownership, as does a higher finish up the table, and makes us a better prospect for potential recruits. TFG would be a very rare breed of owners if they didn’t want European games next season as they’d be turning down revenue.

Based on these facts I expect both Moyes and TFG would welcome European football next season.

Eric Myles
62 Posted 26/01/2026 at 16:20:12
Jimmy #61, if Europe was our owners ambition this season I'd have thought the ace recruitment team they now have in place would have signed a right back and a striker on day one of the transfer window.

Instead they gave themselves a £40 million pat on the back.

Regardless of the good result at Villa Park don't expect an immediate excellent follow up today.

We have all seen this scenario before coming back home against a ''lesser'' team.

Yes they will have the two Afcon players available but I would also have liked KDH and Grealish available too.

However we have to take what we can get and in the absence of nothing new in the striking department we have to hope Messrs. Barry and Beto can grab the points but I wouldn't care who scores the winner.

Leeds stole the points at Elland Rd. and have a decent squad who have done well recently with DCL starring. Hopefully Jake and Tarks. stay solid today.

Jimmy Carr
65 Posted 26/01/2026 at 17:13:33
Eric (63) qualifying for Europe is not dependant on us spending in the January transfer window. They’re two separate things. We can get better value for our buck in the summer, and the players we want may not be available now anyway, but that doesn’t mean Europe isn’t achievable this season. Otherwise why would Moyes talk about it? You are putting two and two together and getting five if you think the club doesn’t want European football. Why would they turn down the revenue? Doesn’t make any sense. Btw, I generally like your posts!

66 Posted 26/01/2026 at 17:16:36
I'd definitely get them to play deeper than they have been at home.

I don't see Leeds sitting back, so let them come on to us and we will have more joy hitting them on the break, rather than them being able to punish us, like we've seen this year.

They do have pace, but I believe our defence should cope well.

We need a win here, get back to being solid at home !

Harrison back to Preston. Great idea, we have such a huge injury free squad. Christ on a bike !

Darren,

Don't get me wrong, I really want Jake O'Brien to succeed.

Your piece is well balanced and my only concern is that like all Everton players he ends up a whipping boy like so many others.

Alan, we are very close to injury free in midfield. Only Grealish is out long-term now. Harrison Armstrong would probably end up on the bench for the rest of the season if he stays.

I think it's good that he goes back to playing weekly for PNE.
Although if I were manager of the team, I'd make them all eat Heinz Baked beans.

Sorry, had a flash back there, I mean if I was manager I'd play Armstrong Garner and Dewsbury-Hall as starting midfield... but Moyes won't.

Obviously by Harrison I mean Armstrong.

(Edit button STILL not working???)

Fair point Mark but I'd see him now as more or less part of the squad (admittedly after only a few outings).

I'd like him here and available to come off the bench and replace tired legs as required. Either way a great prospect!

Dale #54, I loved Tony Yeboah. Tree-trunk thighs and one of the greatest volley goals I ever saw.

Alan #68, has Moyes confirmed that Armstrong goes back to Preston? I hadn't seen that.

But if he doesn't see the kid as a starter ahead of Gana and Garner, I'm all for him getting starter's minutes at Preston. That club is one point out of the final playoff spot, with 7-8 teams in the mix. A Championship playoff battle is a crucible that forges players under pressure. Garner, KDH, Tarks, Seamus, and in past years Jags and Cahill all came through that fire, and look what they became. I think it'll be the greatest experience a teenager could have, and he'll return to Everton ready to step into the 11 permanently.
