After remaining uncharacteristically slient throughout pre-season, David Moyes was giving very little away in an interview with Vinny O'Connor on Sky Sports.

“I’m pleased with the players we’ve brought in. You have to remember that two of them were already here last year, so we’ve just made them permanent.

“I think it will take Hayden a little bit of time to adapt from the Championship to the Premier League, which quite often it does with players coming from the Championship. Christian is very experienced and will help us replace Idrissa Gueye, but unfortunately he’s injured at the moment.

“Brennan has just come in on the back of the swap deal for Dwight (McNeil). So, look, we’re putting things together but we certainly feel behind the scenes that we’ve got a long way to go and need to do an awful lot more.”

Moyes said: “We’re still needing quite a few players to add to the squad. I’d like to do more if possible, we need to see how the remaining few weeks go.”

When asked about the positions he wa looking to strengthen, he curtly replied: “I’m not going to tell you. But we’re well aware of what’s required and we’re working hard to try and make it happen."

When asked if he would comment about the situation with Jack Grealish, Moyes came out with his usual deflection: “No, not at the moment. It’s not for me to talk, Jack’s a player at Man City and I don’t think it’s right to talk about players at other clubs.”

Watched Moyes interview with Vinny O'Connor on Sky

He gave very little away, but says he wants more signings, but didn't look very inspiring. He did mention Norgaard is injured, didn't elaborate?

Moyes has stated to Sky that he still wants a few more signings in the next couple of weeks. He’s coughed that Rohl and George were all ready there on Loan before buying, so, I expect more incomings and Moyes is definitely making rumblings about squad depth.

Let’s see who comes or what develops?

How can Moyes reel out this same mantra every year!!! We aren't where we need to be!!! For fuck's sake, it's his training regime.

I think what he means could be "They wouldn't let me sign my Dad's Army players". There's definitely a disconnect.

Well the manager has gone public, called out the hierarchy to do all they can to get those players in.

Obviously the manager can only do so much behind the scenes, but at least we know his stance, and he is not totally happy.

There's clearly a stand-off between Moyes and the recruitment guys about the right-back position.

It's just a hunch but I imagine the recruitment boys are proposing younger, progressive right-backs. And I imagine Moyes wants a solid Hibbert-type defender with experience.

Hopefully someone will arrive in the next few days before the season starts. But it's far from ideal. To my mind, the recruitment guys should know exactly what type of right-back Moyes wants, and they should then crunch the data and come up with players that fit what the manager wants. This stand-off doesn't help, does it?

That said, I do believe that we will bring in at least two players on loan towards the end of the window. Hopefully decent players…

It’s embarrassing to see the likes of Ipswich this year and Sunderland last year getting players we have been after and then hearing Moyes say they didn’t want to come to Everton.

I’m just waiting to the end of the window to hear the usual bullshit “ We tried really hard but we just couldn’t get them over the line “.

Danny #8 "I imagine the recruitment boys are proposing younger, progressive right backs. And I imagine Moyes wants a solid Hibbert-type defender with experience."

Hibbert was 21 when Moyes promoted him from the youth team to be the regular starting right back, his only experience being half a dozen games in the previous two seasons under Walter.

Without proof, I claim Moyes knows full well what the strategy and numbers are regarding transfers.

That line, "So, look, we’re putting things together but we certainly feel behind the scenes that we’ve got a long way to go and need to do an awful lot more.”, that bothers me for some reason. The tone seems rather defensive and narrative-building. He may as well have added, "but we won't this time around".

Moyes isn't giving it to the upstairs people here, he is taking the bullet while offering their narrative. And he knows he will get paid for getting another light squad over the line.

Some encouraging news from el bobble:

Richarlison wants out, spurs want him out. His agent is desperate to get him back to Everton. All noise from their side currently, not ours.

Grealish, we only want a loan deal and for a smaller fee than our last loan. City obviously holding out for a sale. No one biting yet. Let's see if City relent or not late in the window

4 RBs on the table for us currently. All quite different. When you get this far down the list each has something to compromise on.

Tim deal still in negotiations. Hull are on the cheap for all their deals. Trying to use minor injury to negotiate very favourable terms. We're not currently moving as we have the option to extend, so no real pressure to sell

I suspect he was more worried about defence Mal, and that he didn't rate Patterson. I think he knew he needed a right back, and flagged it up in January, and TFG decided to sit on their hands. Just my guess of course. but it would explain all this silence, that he said 'well I'm not going out there telling everyone it's going to be ok, it's up to you to get in the players'.
Dale, that's him telling the transfer committee, 'we're not even half way there yet'.

"It’s embarrassing to see the likes of Ipswich this year and Sunderland last year getting players we have been after and then hearing Moyes say they didn’t want to come to Everton".

This could mean a couple of things.

1. We wouldn't pay wages or money upfront
2. Moyes and his tactics/reputation precedes him

My guess it's a combination of both. If Moyes is at loggerheads with the recruitment team over young v older (Moyes type) players then get rid of him, he's payed to manage a team, he's not there to run the rule over the whole club structure.

Given that Moyes won’t play Patterson, we should be signing 2 right backs anyway, so Moyes can have his experienced one and the transfer team can have their young one.

We’ve actually got loads of players, but most of them are central midfielders. Moyes has failed to use the resources at his disposal and it has cost us, so it is very rich of him to talk about squad depth when he refused to use 4-5 promising players last season even when regulars were knackered.

Right back aside, we’ve got the classic ‘two players for every position’ but big question marks over the quality of striker and left back.

We have potentially one of the best goalkeeper/centre-backs trios in the league but Moyes will insist on putting Tarkowski in somehow.

In terms of TFG, it is very much their MO to negotiate hard, walk away if necessary and be patient to get what they want on the terms they want. That’s the glimmer of hope here.

Well, at long last, we have heard from the manager... but, looking at his body language and listening to what he said, it only backs up what I have thought for a long while: that the manager and owners are on a different page.

He obviously wanted to play down the transfer activity so far, saying two of the signings were here last season and informed us that Christian Norgaard has an injury and Hackney will take time to get used to the Premier League.

I think a blind man could have identified where we needed strengthening and maybe tongue planted firmly in cheek, Moyes said they have identified where we need strengthening and the club is working very hard to rectify it.

Obviously Moyes isn't going to walk away from his contract and it seems TFG are in no hurry to replace him. Meanwhile, they are prepared to let their incompetent recruitment team carry on buying players that seemingly the present manager doesn't want... hardly a recipe for success.

Brian how do you know they are incompetent when the manager has the final say on transfers and always has had.

Our European head scout is his son!

The agent of our short term expert set piece coach Charlie Adam is Moyes brother.

He is feathering his nest and his hangers on whilst the owners aren't arsed about anything other than staying in the league.

Are we in a favorable financial position to strengthen the squad for the coming season???

New "Squad Cost Ratio" rules come into force this season.

These replace the old system of Profit and Sustainability Rules which limited losses to 105 million pound over a previous three-year period for which we received points deductions as being in breach of the said rules.

It would seem that we will still be severely affected as to how much we can spend based on current Squad Cost Ratios for which I understand are as follows:

All PL teams with a SCR less than 85% of club total football revenues spend are deemed to be in complete compliance.

Breaches above 85% and up to 115% incur penalties restricted to fines and a PL levy (which at the present time seems not to be disclosed) and which are classified as being in the green zone.

Breach of the category green zone into the red zone, being over 115% of total football revenue will include both fines and points deductions.

Current SC Numerator for 26/27 at EFC is reportedly 218 million pounds (psrwatch.com) with wages at 155 million and Amortization at 59 million pounds leaving us at 102% of SCR. (222 / 218)

We are already well above the SCR 85% allowable threshold albeit quite a long way below the dreaded red zone. Any further millions spent on payers coming in without players going out soon pushes us up toward the maximum 115% limit.

Is this the reason we cannot compete effectively in the transfer market hence the low to mid -range signings we seem to be chasing?

I am no financial wizard and hope I have understood the breakdown and limitations to spending on future players.

Pleased to accept corrections from those more financially aware than myself.

@12 - Dale

All he ever tells people is how long it takes to build success. He tries to apply that rule universally rather than more accurately pointing out how long it takes him to build success -- a perpetual building process that he never manages to complete.

Didn't take Unai Emery or Eddie Howe that long. Or Klopp. Carrick took a team that finished 15th and qualified them for the Champions League.

Perhaps if he was more clear about exactly what needs to be built then supporters may understand. Otherwise, they feels he's just making excuses for his own shortcomings

I think you also have to look, in some cases, how hard it is to attract players to Merseyside for Everton, they are not offering huge wages as the Reds can.
I was in Bowden South of Manchester a couple of weeks back and as I went round this corner came face to face with Roy Keane, he actually let on. I travelled into Manchester from Altrincham on the Metro and sitting opposite was Tony Hibbert, I had a chat, said he was meeting up with some mates in Manchester, he also said, most of the Everton players live in and around the South Manchester area, not interested in living around Liverpool. When I was in Manchester, I was taken to a bar and the first guy I saw, was Dibling with a group of lads/girls. It is hard to attract players from abroad when their wives/partners only want to live in London. The moral being, they will come for big pay cheques, sadly not at Everton.

I agree that it is essential to frame our ambitions with the reality of SCR and of course the trading we do during the window continuously changes the picture. The player costs look about right to me, but I think the revenue figure is somewhat pessimistic because I assume this is forward looking for 2026/7.

The number I've seen talked about reflecting a full year of contribution for the new stadium is nearer £250m for the coming year. I hope it's nearer that otherwise our new stadium is not covering investment. If that higher number was planned for, we would be 80% based on your player cost guesstimate.

My hunch is that our transfer completion of last year's two loan signings, plus Hackney has taken all the net spend available and right now we have to sell to buy (that's Tim's deal) or rely on more loans.

My other hunch is that they are also tying to contingency plan around the possible need/desire to sell Ndiaye because the proceeds from such a sale would provide a decent amount of funding to cover the positions we know we are short on.

All of which might explain why dealings have now ground to a halt, and we are in reactive, not proactive mode. Sad to say, we're simply not as rich as we wish we were, and that is partly down to disastrous historic transfer activity.
John Hall

Mark 44

Correct in your assumptions that I had never considered increases in revenue as you mentioned Mark.

Extra seating capacity at around 30% more than we ever could get at Goodison, increases in corporate revenues plus higher priced premium seating alongside revenue increases in catering, non football activities and major sporting and non sporting events hopefully will elevate our revenue to the levels you mention.

That at least alongside a high priced sale of probably the only one player we have worth in excess of 45 million at today's crazy prices which would give us a lot more leeway in trying to get in higher profile players and on the increased wages they would demand.

As you indicate we are not a member of the rich elite cartel any more and probably never will be again unless a genius in marketing arrives and who could elevate us to levels we aspire to achieve. For this we need European football and putting some trophies in the empty cabinet.

Can dream as always!!

How could we ever catch the likes of City with revenues in excess of 640 million pounds?

The previous PL rules and regulations have fixed us good and proper and left us as one to make up the numbers for the mega rich elitist favored clubs we all know but don't need to mention.

By comparison, Crystal Palace have signed 4 players so far :

Dwight McNeill - straight swap
Kanan Kalhadi - £25m - he's 21.
Oscar Mingueza - Free - he's a RB ( One we should have been in for )
Takehiro Tomiyaso - Free - he's a CB/RB.

So rhat's £25m plus fees etc etc. Makes us look like the Rothschilds.
They have won FA Cup and Conference League in past two seasons.

Newcastle have signed 6 players at a cost of £192m. They have sold off the family silver to do this - Tonali, Guimares and Gordon raising £260m and Livramento may be on his way shortly too. No wonder Eddie walked.

Meanwhile the SLY SIX keep racking the signings up. Cherry picking the best of the up and coming squads. Arsenal - Rogers from Villa and now after Konsa too, for instance. To say the dice is loaded for the SKY SIX is a real understatement.

Meanwhile the tench of the EPL, Everton, bottom feed and hope someone will come along and pay £70m for Ndiaye. Obviously the later the circling wolves bite, the harder it will be to get the deals done, that we want to make. It's all crap really.

John, 43,

I think that's a big factor we often overlook. I was getting myself all annoyed that we didn't sign Oscar Mingueza, a quality right-back, Spanish international and free transfer. Instead we ‘allowed' him to sign for Palace instead.

Then I realised that Palace are competing in the Europa League and for a Spaniard, living in London would be a big draw. We may well have wanted him but the reality is, plenty of players will choose ‘lesser' (in our eyes) clubs for reasons such as this. Brentford, Brighton, Palace, Fulham and Bournemouth can all offer things that certain players will prefer over our history, fanbase and stadium.

As it stands, CP have still had a higher bet spend over the past 5 years, but I wonder if their problem is that by competing in Europe, their SCR is (I believe) 70% not the 85% we are allowed. That would imply cuts to player budgets, wages and amortisation which might explain their situation this window.

I believe this is a big problem for smaller clubs, fighting to qualify for the lesser euro competitions which don't bring in that much money. You actually need a bigger squad but then have to cut your budget.

I know this will sound controversial but I think had we qualified for the conf league, which really is a very small revenue raiser, we'd have been in trouble this window. Strikes me we have to build commercial revenue as much as we can and then try targeting CL status because that is the only one what truly pays for itself. But that is hard and I suspect intentionally so, making it all but impossible to break the current monopoly and doing a pretty good job at ensuring aspiring clubs in the lesser competitions are kneecapped.

Is this code for 'I didn't sign this player and, unless I really have to (injuries etc), I'm not too keen to play him just yet.'

If there is some sort of deadlock or power struggle on the Committeeee, then the top man, the CEO, needs to put on his, 'Me Boss - You salaried employee' (Worker in old money) Boots and stamp on it.

Leaving 'The Merch & Events etc' aspect aside at Everton, just who in a footballing sense is running the show???

TFG's long-term hires: the CEO, the Sports Director, and the Player Acquisitions guy (The 3 Amigos) or the guy with -- allegedly -- just 11 months left on his contract??

Because whoever it is -- or as it seems right now isn't -- well, they're doing a piss poor job, as the right-back situation and Wan-Bissaka to Villa might indicate.

If Moyes can't or won't agree to bide with the Committee decisions, can't or won't use the tools provided by the Committee, then the CEO has to man up and get somebody in who can!

I agree, it feels like disagreement on the transfer committee. Kinnear talked about healthy tension, some wanting immediate impact, some wanting youth to develop. You can do both, but very hard on a limited transfer spend.

Moyes is hanging on for Alistair Johnston at a reduced price... he'll only be a little bit injured by the end of the window!

Zian Flemming scored 11 Premier League goals in 29 games for Burnley. In the season before, he scored 13 while on loan at Burnley in the Champonship.

1st game of this season, he scored 2 against West Ham on Sunday. He won't come cheap.

when you read Moyes's comments, he makes it clear that we've not improved at all investment wise from what we had last season. In fact, we don't have Grealish. Currently we are weaker than last year. A couple of loans made perm, a couple of swaps, the only new signing extra body, is the lad from the championship for an initial outlay of £16m.
Which when you think of the defence that finished last season, and the fact the season is a few days away, is fucking pathetic.

If Middlesborough had got promoted do you think Hackney would be on the bench every week until he 'got used to the pace' of the PL. Moyes does talk some tripe at times.

Kevin @ 73, if we sell Tim then even Hackney just becomes a replacement which leaves us one man down on last season with no replacement for Coleman.

Andrew yes. I've just been reading Phil McNulty's predictions for who will finish where, and he runs through the other teams and how they are recruiting.

It really brings home that, at the moment, the only teams you would have confidence Everton would finish above are the three promoted teams. And if one of them does a Sunderland, we are properly in the shit. Self-inflicted too.

Spot on Kevin. I fear another season of praying 3 other teams are worse than we are.

Moyes can't find a right-back. Well, here is another one you missed:

Kosta Nedeljkovic has joined Rangers on a season-long loan from Aston Villa, with the Ibrox club holding a "conditional obligation" to buy the 20-year-old Serbia defender.

The right-back moved to Aston Villa from Red Star Belgrade in the summer of 2024, having signed in January, and has since had two successive loan spells with RB Leipzig.

Kosta is an athletic and energetic full-back who is keen to get forward, but he also has a real desire to defend and compete. Too young for Moyes? Must be a good reason why your crack recruitment team are missing all these players.

Another one bites the dust. Next!!!

It didn't take the Sunderland players long to get up in the Premier League last season.

Load of bollocks about Hackney.

Well, that didn't take long, David Moyes. Here is another one you and your crack recruitment team missed.

Newcastle United have signed defender Amar Dedic from Benfica for about £30M. Moyes: In case you didn't know, he's a??? no... he's a right-back.

The Bosnia-Herzegovina international has joined the club on a 5-year deal after having a medical on Tyneside on Monday. He will probably play against the dark side this week. He can also play at left-back.

Another one bites the dust... Next!

Dear David Moyes and crack recruitment team. Take a look here, even you just may have a chance of finding a right-back. There are actually quite a few available:

64.

Has it ever crossed your mind that Wan-Bissacka wants to play Champions League and maybe commute from London to Birmingham, which is easier than the North West?

Plus why do people believe that Everton FC is the place to be, because we have a brand new stadium? The manager? We have shit supporters, probably.

Konsa going to Arsenal. Maybe that means White is coming to Everton. A right-back and tall too. Ooohh, says the Moyesiah. White can play CB too...

He played 90 minutes in the Community Shield, so to coin a phrase, he's oven ready. Knowing the Moyesiah, he'll want to bed him in, so we'll see him after the International break.

The bench on Saturday will look interesting, even if the starting XI is unimaginative.

Everton I believe already have a squad to probably get 10 more points than the last 3 seasons, so why the panic???

If they're lucky enough to bring in a couple of quality players, they will be well on their way, with or without Moyes.

Nearly all the rubbish players have gone -- we should be positive; let's start with 3 points against Crystal Palace and kick on from there.

Why the hell do people think Ben White will come to Everton?

Has there been any indication that he even wants to???

"We have shit supporters." -- John W?

Or maybe we have the best supporters who've supported the club through a long period of garbage owners and managers?

That's the problem trying to get quality players when you are not in the Champions League. It's all about money and a player's career can be all too short, so they need to make their money from the more lucrative deals.

Ben White has no reason to leave the Gooners to come to a club like Everton unless he is totally pissed off with Arteta and nobody else wants him.

It's no surprise that many clubs looking to sell quality players will ask for too much now that the window is closing soon. Everton, of course, will have to rely on swaps and loans for now.

I agree the squad looks better now... but certain weaknesses will keep us around mid-table unless we are pleasantly surprised in the next 12 days.

“I think it will take Hayden a little bit of time to adapt from the Championship to the Premier League, which quite often it does with players coming from the Championship”.

Yeah right, the same way it did for Sunderland's players, none of whom as far as I know had any Premier League experience, bar one, Granit Xhaka. A squad of 25 or so, appeared to adapt quite quickly to the Premier League from the Championship, going on to claim a European spot.

Moyes Out!!
