Fabio Capello has apparently spoken to Mikel Arteta regarding the possibility of him playing for England
Other threads have revealed divided opinion (though with a negative majority) about whether a reasonable chance of playing for his adopted country is preferable to clinging to the hope that injuries or a catastrophic drop of form to players might open the door to him playing in Spain.
The article states that gaining a UK passport, even after the statutory five year stay in the country, would normally take nine months. However it can be fast-tracked...Why, with net immigration up 20% from 2009, might this be allowed to happen?
Two reasons: a desperate national football team...with the cogs greased by an Anglised name to appease the nationalist / patriotic / xenophobic element of the Three Lions Support...?

He wants to play as an International and England offers the chance? Why not? It's a big world now for years. Arteta starting or off the bench for England WC 2014 at age 32? I'd pick him. Talent is talent.
Even if he gave up on any hope of representing Spain, who's to say he'd choose to play for England? If Arteta became a British Citizen he could represent any of the constituent countries - remember, Pat van den Hauwe chose to represent Wales.
Taking this to an extreme, we could have a whole England team of foreign talent simply for the fact they took the money to come to the PL. It would turn football into League Representative football that was done away with back in the... whatever decade.
This is an aweful situation that that (that that?) Chelsea supporting sports minister who died a few years back tried to promote... one of his more sane ideas.

I could see myself moving to a different country at least temporarily but I will always be an American (the same applies for every other country in the world). No legal document will ever make me Canadian or Brazilian or English or anything other than American.

How come a foreign footballer can be given immediate British citizenship by virtue of residence but my foreign wife would have to wait for the 2 year backlog of applications to be cleared?

Being a European citizen, he would have no problem migrating here anyway. A change of nationality, other than offering him the chance to play for England (which he could presumably do anyway under a "Grandparent" type rule where he does not have to physically surrender his Spanish (Euro) passport... Has he not now got dual nationality) would offer him what benefits?
Regardless of whether he's English/British, in old age he would receive a State Pension, as he will have made the required National Insurance contributions (that of a small village given his wages), and heating allowance as there's no way not to accept the non-means tested benefit. He'd also presumably get Job Seekers allowance in the highly unlikely event that he lost most of his wealth and had no form of employment. Unfortunately for him, well his kids most likely, he'd be hit with our 40% Inheritance Tax rather than Spain's sliding scale system.
So other than being able to call himself an Englishman, what benefits would he get for going British?

Has anyone else thought that this may simply be a talented and gifted footballer realising this could be his last change of playing at the highest level in the game? Mikel is 28, he properly has about 5 to years at the top left (maybe less given his recent injury problems) and he sees this as his only chance to play in a European Championship or World Cup.
It?s not ideal for the lad and playing for England won't mean anything to him compared with representing Spain, but he wants to test himself at the highest level. I?m sure if Everton were regularly playing in the CL this would be a non-start for him, but unfortunately this is not the case.

Mikel is Spanish, not English! therefore he should in no way at all be linked with the English team. He has spent his whole career trying to play for his country which is Spain! Arteta is neither Spanish nor English. He is Basque. He's just as English as he is Spanish. As he can't be a citizen of his own country due to its lack of political independence; he happens to be a citizen of both Spain and Britain. As he can't play football for his own country (the Basque country) due the lack of a FIFA-recognised national team, he is condemned to play for one of the two countries he happens to be a citizen of. As a proud Basque, he might as well choose to play for the country that is not occupying his own country.
Look at the bigger picture. National borders comming down, Poles, Turks playing for Germany and now the Lefty meeja are trying to push Arteta into the England team. Funny that all these attitudes are happening in the same time frame.

Hey Chris (17), I started supporting my beloved Everton when we won the FA Cup in 1984. How else was I to know about them living in Dublin when my father was a big Man U fan, and my older brother too?

As for supporting your own national team, as an Irishman I have always had an interest in the England teams at the World Cup, especially if a blue was in the team, I would like to see him do well.
