Moyes eyes Maynard on a free

26/01/2012 | Comments (19)
Everton are hoping that Nicky Maynard stays put at Bristol City this month in the hopes of snapping the striker up on a free transfer in the summer.

The 25 year-old forward reportedly turned down a move to Wigan this week and could sign a pre-contract agreement with Everton with a view to following Jermaine Beckford's footsteps from the Championship to Goodison Park.

Maynard is even given 'boo's' by his own fans..

The quote above 'following in Beckfords footsteps' should be enough to make the lad run a mile..

Become Evertons top goalscorer.. and we will flog you back to the Championship to pay the bar bill.....

We are becoming a fucking joke... no forget that.. we maybe a joke already !

How is it a joke to get a player on a free, have him score goals and then sell for a profit? Surely this is EXACTLY what we need to be doing?

It becomes a joke mate when you sell the player that you got for nothing after he starts scoring goals and the two regulars who can't hit a barn yard door get a regular first team spot... We could have kept the Yak, Vaughan, or Beckford; instead we kept Vic and sick-note Saha...

We also bring back McFadden....now we are loaning him out! Serious! Do you not think that we are a Joke?

Getting McFadden back was a joke. Selling beckford for needed profit was not.

Getting players in on a free and then selling them on for a fee is good for the club finances but it doesn't benefit the building of a squad or team pf footballers to help improve things in the medium term.

How can you be critical of the Beckford decision? People make it sound like we got Messi on a free and sold him for a couple of million and now he is worth 100 times that. Look at Beckford's stats he had one great season at Leeds and that is it.

This season at Leicester he has made 20 appearances, 14 of which are starts and of them all 14 he has been substituted off, hardly the mark of a quality, game changing player. The other 6 appearances he came off the bench. He has bagged two goals in over 1000mins of football. He has one assist all season not exactly the provider. He has had 28 shots, so just over one per appearance and of them only 10 on target, so less than one per start. He is 28 so should be at his prime and he likes more like he is on the decline.

I know Saha is not scoring and big Vic has been a little absent and the rest of the team are not filling in the goal shortage, but Beckford is not the solution, and paying him money to warm our bench is a waste, we made a small profit and overall you have to say this time the club did well.

Beckford was complete dogshit , lazy bastard who thought he was a player but was a shithouse who had no first touch , can't head and missed more than he scored , good riddance

I thought Beckford got a hat-trick recently. Beckford is just one more in a long line of Strikers Moyes has dislikked because of their lack of defensive contributions. Who can forget how Goodison used to shake as Biffa tracked his man to the edge of our area?

Beckford was keen, and when he did play alongside Saha, he made space for him. Movement ahead of the ball is severely lacking in this side, at least Beckford provided that. For the sake of the profit I would rather have seen him play. It was this stage of the season last year we scored a few goals with him in the side.

Adam (274) yes that is right he bagged 3 against Nott Forrest in the cup. The stats I gave were from the league this year.

I am not sure what or who you were watching but I didn't see much quality in him, and keeping away from opinions I would stick with facts and his league stats are shocking. One goal every 500 odd hours of football, which is a goal every 5 and a half games. On those stats if we had played him he would get about 6 goals a season, maybe 7.

You could argue that on those stats he would be top scorer at the club with 4 goals. But come who cares, I want to see someone who bags 20+ a season not someone who does a victory tour of the city when they manage 10. He never was and never will be good enough; we need better strikers not Beckford back.

"following Jermaine Beckford's footsteps from the Championship to Goodison Park".
Beckford never came out of the championship, it was division one, a tier lower and he showed how he could score a goal Something that our so called strikers have forgotten. If we are just looking to make money, then why not sell Jags, Distin, Rodwell, Coleman, Barkley, Duffy etc. and then see what happens? This ridiculous policy of buying players and getting rid as soon as possible is all down to one muppet: David Moyes. He's the luckiest bastard in football. Well paid, comfortable position, does fuck all and the fans love him. Well I'm certain he wouldn't have got away with this anywhere else and if it's not good enough for others then why is it good enough for Everton?

Selling Beckford for such a small fee (and to an extent Yakubu too) created a profit but based on a false economy. Given that their goals (remember them?) helped us to seventh last season, and 10 more goals from a striker this season would likely push us up to about 8th or 9th this, then we would receive roughly the same premiership prize money based upon finishing places. This season without these goals let's say we finish where we are now -14th (and most of us would take that) then that's a loss of up to 7 places x £500,000. So then, where's the profit? AND we still have to buy a striker because what we're left with is crap. So we've lost out financially maybe twice over.

Brilliant management, hey?

Selling Beckfrod, Yakubu and Vaughan without replacements was fucking suicide, Beckford was our top scorer, Yakubu didnt get game time, Vaughan was a crock but still more prolific than Anichebe at the time in comparison and we brought in a carthorse Leicester said no thanks to and left us with balsa man and having to hope for goals from our defence and even our keeper.

In anyone's eyes that is a disgrace.

I've watched Maynard since his Crewe days and the boy has ability, definitely worth a punt if we can get him on a free. If it doesn't work and we sell him for a few million fine, if he is a success even better.

Tim, I share your desire for a 20+ a season man, but we sold him as well. The problem lies with how we set up. I said to my mate the other day that if we had someone like, eg, dembele, he would really make a difference.

He replied that we have, Drenthe, but he is not allowed to play his natural offensive game. I think he was right...

Jamie Barlow @323, allow me to educate you in the mind boggling world of Everton FC's transfer policy. We have bought Ruddy, AJ, Beattie, Davies, Kroldrup, Beckford, Lescott, Gosling, Yakubu, Bilyaletdinov and others I can't think of right now, and let them go while in their prime or even still developing. Apart from Lescott, I think we've lost millions on most of them and I'm not evn counting AVDM. Some of these players never had a chance like Ruddy, Gosling and Beckford, to establish themselves in the side before they were shipped out. How can we achieve stability when the side changes so much every season. Moyes has been here ten years yet he still hasn't worked out his best side, or even shape. And no, I don't love BK, I've never met him so there's no great bond there I'm afraid, but I do admire him for backing the manager for all those years he broke our transfer record more times than any other I can remember. And I understand why he can't or won't trust him with any more big cash offers after the debacle after debacle when Moyes has paid big bucks. You couldn't make it up could you?

Beckford's speed was a constant menace to most defences even in the Prem. Just ask John Terry.
Notice how slow our offence has been this season especially with Coleman out.
Donovan has helped speed things up but Saha,Anichebe, Cahill and Straqs are all one paced. Velios may be the quickest of all of them but cannot get a game.
Still Moyes prefers the hoof-ball strategy and so the few goals we get will be from crosses or dead ball situations.
