Stats highlight Everton's derby edge

Blues passing shows who really played the football
Steven Gerrard may be trying his best to claim that Liverpool were the better side in Sunday's 219th Merseyside derby, but the statistics from the game disprove the Reds captain's ridiculous assertion that Everton are a "long ball" team.

Still smarting from the late 'goal' that would have handed Brendan Rodgers' team an undeserved win but was chalked off by the officials, Gerrard tried to draw comparisons with Stoke City's direct and physical approach.

"There was only one team who came into the derby trying to play football," Gerrard bleated. "Everton are effective because they have some big physical lads in the team and are very direct.

Everton are not better than us. I thought we stood up to a team that are very similar to Stoke. Every single time they got the ball to their goalkeeper it came in long. We had a young, small team and they were all men and stood together. We deserved the win."

The match stats paint a different picture, though. Everton attempted 478 passes to their 357, made over a hundred accurate passes more than the Reds (359 to 257) and delivered twice as many crosses into the box, creating more chances, and forced Liverpool into more tackles.

Most salient, though: the Blues' long-ball total was 14% compared with Liverpool's 17%.

Liverpool also made almost three times as many backpasses as Everton, and Tim Howard recorded a 59% pass completion rate, while Keeper Jones had just 38% — and Howard made more open play passes than his rival.

Everton successfully completed 100 of 154 attempted passes in Liverpool's final third, with Liverpool completing 63 of their 103 attempted passes in Everton's final third.

As if that wasn't enough, Gerrard opened himself up to further ridicule with his complaints at Phil Neville's ill-advised dive to try and win a free kick late in the first half.

A video compilation of just some of Gerrard's simulation antics for club and country — not to mention Luis Suarez's disgusting behaviour in recent weeks — should be enough evidence to persuade the midfielder that people in glass houses, shouldn't throw stones.

James, I saw the same article this morning on the way to work —comparing us to Stoke who are conveniently below them by a place unfortunately... He also forgot to say that we had 57% of the possession, what a nob !!

So much sour grapes from Stevie Grapes. Very poor from Hodgson's appointed England captain. So much luck he has enjoyed in Derby matches and now opening his big mouth because of his mob throwing away an undeserved 2-0 lead and getting screwed by a linesman.

Does it not matter that Everton got screwed last season with a blatant Ratboy dive and a bad refereeing call that gave Rodwell an undeserved Red card and cost Everton the game? He really is showing his true colours now as a spoilt kid who is taking his ball and going home to Mummy.

What an asshole.

I see in this article from today's Guardian that the captain of our lovable neighbours can't accept what the stats say... what a twat.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2012/oct/29/liverpool-steven-gerrard-everton-physical

Accusation of being a 'long-ball, physical team' is what Fergie said when we beat the Mancs as I remember. We must be getting under their skin, excellent.

Steven Gerrard has been quoted as saying that Everton play like Stoke city. The past-it skipper of the weakest team on Merseyside went on to say that only one team came to play "football" on Sunday. However, the normally pro-Liverpool BBC Sport team seemed to disagree with his statements. His critique of the Blues was followed up by this statement from the editorial team:

"The statistics, however, showed that Everton enjoyed greater possession, made more passes and completed proportionally fewer long passes than Liverpool."

I hope he reads it and looks at their in depth break down of the stats because if he does he will feel pretty foolish — and this was an Everton team not even playing that well.

Gerrad.... hang your head in shame!!! How wrong are you, which game was you playing in... Bitter and Fustrated captain, knowing that Liverpool are no longer going forward but backwards must be hard to take... a player who could and should have gone to Chelsea to gain a league medal but decided to retire with none.

They use to call us bitter blues but the OPTA stats don't lie, the table doesn't lie.... so who's bitter now?? Only Mr Steven Gerrad, he must cry himself to sleep these days and his only pleasure is to make jealous cheap insults.

Don't forget that in their pursuit of a god-given right to play CL football , drawing at Goodison was a setback for them, as they have to play catch up on us Arsenal and Spurs as well as a couple of others. They have to rely on all those clubs slipping up whilst at the same time win their own games, it would seem to me that SG realises that week by week their chances of achieving their goal slips away. This to me explains his comments but in no way does it excuse them.

I don't know why people are getting so annoyed by this. We have a line in a song, 'we don't care what the Red Shite say'. The deluded ramblings of their skipper shouldn't concern us, and stats don't win games (despite what Brendan Rodgers and his cohorts try to shove down our throats).

A point was all we got from the game, all our focus should be on the next match against Fulham, a war of words with the Kopites over last Sunday's game doesn't help our cause.

It must be frustrating when you're the wrong side of thirty, got fewer medals than most of your England teamates and are generally regarded as 'gone at the game'. Gerrard looked shot yesterday - he's not the player we used to fear. Remember Goodison celebrating his injury and substitution in the Gosling Cup Tie? That's respect and fear. Now he's a shadow of that man.

You mean the Liverpool captain that only did anything of note in 2 5-minute blocks for the whole game?? How many of their players did we injure with bad tackles? (not enough usually suffices, but...)

All-in-all, I thought a draw was a fair result; our domination should have won us the game, but they probably shouldn't have had that goal disallowed (definitely not for offside, there looked to be a foul on Jags but apparently that wasn't picked up).

But what I am hating is the redshite fans & players saying they were robbed, when they have had the rub of the green in just about every derby for the last 700 years! They obviously can't remember last season when the most influential player on the pitch was sent off for a perfect tackle.

He and they are rattled by us - that's in part why it matters. His pathetic self-serving comments haver been panned on the BBC footie site. I particularly liked the following:

'As a Liverpool fan I have to say he is talking nonsense. Like West Brom earlier this season they were direct but not in a Stoke way, they had great movement and individual skill amd there was always a passing option. More of a Real Madrid lite. Our pressing game wasn't up to scratch and at times we were awfully static in attack in contrast'.

Personally I'm glad we are witnessing the last days of Stevie boy. Not the player he was, on the slippery slope to being a nomark. His astute (sic) reading of the Derby will mean that Red Nev need not worry about losing his commentary position with Sky. Did he get any qualifications from school? Adding up, or reading statistics don't appear to be his strong points......

Never realised he was so bitter until I saw this and some recent excerpts from his autobiography. He really does hate us doesn't he, horrible chants aside, carragher and Gerrard seem to be guilty of the exact thing they accuse us of. They always go on about Everotn only worrying about finishing above Liverpool but it seems the only game they ever really want to win each season is against us. To be honest this sort of stuff is music to my ears, rather this any day than Ferguson and Gerrard going on about what a great club we are and how they love playing in these passionate games (after they've walked away with an easy 2-0 win). I think they realised from last season and the start of this one that the derbies would be crucial. they own both last year and still finished 4 behind us. we're already 6 ahead this year, its probably clear to steven that we may well take more points off everyone else in the league than they will so these 6 points woould be crucial to them. As it is they've made no ground on us even when we were severely weakened by injuries and had given them a 2 goal lead. Add this to the fact that his own powers are severely waning and he couldn't get near a combination of Osman and Neville and he must be in a world of frustration. The delusional leading the delusional.

Well, all of their peers (Man U, Chelsea, Man City etc.) have passed them by... We're now the team for them to compare themselves/compete with - and we're passing them by too hopefully.

The blessing and curse of a star player is that they're great, but tough to sell because the fans love them so much. If they had sold Gerrard 2-3 years ago they could've gotten 50+m for the cretin. Now he'll retire a loser and they'll receive nothing for him. Their owners have a lot of money to reinvest in their baseball team and that Liverpool side we're seeing must be the worst they've put out in a long, long time. Long die the reds!

He's no idiot, he can see the writing on the wall. If I were him I'd be pissed too :)

I have to admit that I have been saying for the past three years that they were the worst Liverpool team I have seen in my 40 years of watching football and yet they keep on coming back season after season and proving me wrong.

It is FANTASTIC that Stevie G is so narked and I believe it's a good indicator of just how far they have fallen.

I absolutely fucking LOVE reading anything along the lines of "We're better than Everton" or "We deserved to win" or "They played like Stoke".

Remember, it was not too long ago that we were a 'small team' and "United is now our derby' etc blah.

Well they're now so far from winning a title, that WE finish above them.

Everton ffs!

Basically all this Gerrard stuff is nothing but good old-fashioned, childish, frustrated venting.

He knows we've had to watch every penny and they have spent like drunken sailors over the past 10 years.

And for what - For them to finish below...us?

No wonder he's fuming (and don't forget, we played some shite football last year).

It is also imo wonderful that Liverpool FC these days, is basically everything Bill Shankly was against.

This is Anfield?

Er...I don't think it is.

I think it is NOT a hot-bed of local Liverpool support anymore, but a place for football tourists to go to get a few snaps (saw some of their Europa game on telly last week, every time they got a throw-in, you saw 23 girls from Singapore get their mobiles out).

Also (well done Sourpuss!) the hidden secrets of the boot-room are gone, only to be replaced by one of the most toe-curling, cringe-worthy 'documentaries' ever seen.

Add to that players who cheat and support a PROVEN racist.

Plus revisionist 'supporters' who only see in their history what suits them and are blind to whatever doesn't - I personally can't get enough of it.

Shooting themselves in the foot, on and off the pitch, has it appears now become routine

Remember, when you can't affect teams and are no threat to them, you get the patronising pat on the head.

As soon as you start to ruffle their feathers, you get the narked responses of the type we've had this season from 'Stevie G lar' and Sir Alex Whisky-Nose.

Believe me, as long as 'Stevie G lar' is upset with Everton, we're doing something right.

30 Posted 30/10/2012 at 15:34:01
Correct Jim 341 - it's clearly a wind up.

The bottom line is they know we're a better side, had we had Gibson and Pienaar and a match fit Fellaini on the pitch I think we would've walked all over them to be honest.

This is just a cheap attempt to take the focus away from their display and get people to question why were doing so well this season, rather than why they're doing so badly.

The sad thing is you'll now have clueless fans up and down the country who'll chuck out "they're just another Stoke City" as a soundbite over a pint to make out they know what they're talking about, thats what's sad.

Good news is I was watching him on Sunday and I could only think his star is finally falling, two more seasons and he'll add nothing constructive to that team and then where will they be.

Goodbye Stevie G.

The sour grapes is so typical from this miserable sod. Did he not say anything about Ratboy's strafing of Mirallas's ankle and the same ploy on Distin and yet the idiot stayed on the pitch? That's the luck they have. The Rodgers tactics were clear at that point after we pegged them back: stop them at all costs, hence he went with 5 across the back at halftime bringing in another South American hatchet man-Coates.

My only concern was Everton getting done for retaliation when Allen was constantly niggling Fella and Fella was getting angry himself.

If that 93rd minute goal had stood it would have been the most undeserved winner in derby match history and they've had many of those. Justice prevailed however and Ratboy had the smile wiped of his teeth.

So, Stevie grapes, you have nothing to gripe about.

He's carrying on a tradition started by Shankly and carried on by Dalglish (parts 1&2), Evans and Benetez. We should lay down and let them walk all over us, that's what they want. They're victims again because a team stood up to them or they're victims of the referees blah blah fucking blah.

Moyes is good with words and I hope he responds to the mouthy twat, if he doesn't fancy it, ask Joe Royle.

I try not to be biased against certain players but Stevie Geeeeeeeeee reckons Everton are a long ball team like Stoke...

Indeed, a statistical breakdown of the match shows that Everton managed 359 accurate passes to Liverpool's 257 and produced twice as many crosses (34 to 17), most of them low, driven balls from the left by Mirallas or Baines. They also had more possession, more chances and committed less fouls.

For years the derby ways, according to their supporters, EFC's cup final and for many of those years they were probably right to be honest. However Moyes has now assembled a footballing side which is probably his best so far. We are now on an upward curve and the RS have stalled for the umpteenth time in recent years. No doubt they will come again but the Derby is increasingly becoming their Cup Final not ours; I was just annoyed we started badly and dropped points. Even at 2-0 down I actually wasn't worried; the goals were down to poor defending not "the only team playing football".

Stevie Me Laa should have left when he had the chance and is now regretting it big time. He is now playing with a team consisting of average players and cheats. Shame :-)

Well, I suppose being captain of a now middle-of-the-table rated team SG thinks he can slag off other teams.

The thing I have a problem with is him criticizing Everton's captain saying he should set an example and his booking for alleged diving let the team down. True to his character, PN accepted the booking and criticism.

But what I don't like is the captain of England saying PN let the club down after SG LET THE COUNTRY DOWN after receiving a red card in a recent international. People should not throw stones in a glass building.

It is very encouraging to hear comments like this from their captain, it signifies that the club are – yet again – in denial. This is all part of their very slow demise that started in 1990.

To tie this in with another TW forum about BBC bias, it is the combination of over-weaning press coverage and their own lack of a sense of reality which perpetuates their slide towards a Leeds-like destiny.

Very disappointed with Rodgers, who I thought had more class.
Just shows how wrong you can be.

What rankles when you have twits like him speaking to the press like this is that he actually cannot see how hypocritical he is. He has a go at Moyes for claiming Suarez dives (he does!) then he says we play long ball (we don't) and thinks thats OK. He moans about Suarez not being offside (he wasnt) but forgets the fact he shouldnt be on the pitch for the dirty fouls on Mirallas and Distin (he shouldnt have been).

I know I shouldnt expect better from a Red like him and the reds in my family but they actually think Stevie G talks sense. I cant wait until we batter them at some point and Stevie G gets clattered.

Here's the way it works. When a supervisor at work gets it in the neck from his wife at home he generally takes it out on the guys at work er, because he can. There is much vitriol and the people involved can't do diddly squat to argue.

I think not only did Stevie (God I wish I could have been a brilliant rock guitarist) Geraldo became aware that his footballing days were numbered, but for Evertonians it didn't help matters that he walked in on the Mrs having a laugh and a joke with the gardener. And get this my mate has delivered shite to this guys house for Tesco, and he's been caught by St Gerrard havin a laugh with his Mrs.

To describe Gerrard from what I hear, I need an episode of Father Ted.

It's the one where a little tart is on telly being fantastic to all the grannies and Mrs Doyle wins a poetry comp and this little shit comes round to father Teds house and is a complete and utter cumquat i.e. a nasty little shite. This is Gerrard. A nasty little child who cant understand that he's never going to win the title or anything elses for that matter.

But for me, Gerrard is way down the list of disgusting people who have commented in the meeja this weekend. Funny enough they've all been people who have worked for TalkSpurs. The main twat being Medicine ball head Brazil. What a complete and utter cunt this guy has been. Just to put the record straight, Alan, climbing all over a player to gain an advantage commonly known as "taking a ride" then the "Teeth from Hell's" goal should've been disallowed from this act alone. Since you never mentioned this all day on your show tells all Evertonians that you are a womans' genitialia. You disgust me, Brazil. You should, by deedpoll change your name because it defiles the team called Brazil.

Liverpool were Shite on Sunday and the sick media know it. I don't see the meeja talking about Liverpool in terms of racism. Why's that then, memory of a goldfish, or what?

What we need is the honest football fan to start attacking the media. If we don't we'll not have a football competition to talk about. Chelsea. Stand by for all refs to go on strike. It will happen.

I don't like anything that says someone is shite because of the colour of his or her skin. But I hate even more when people will use the colour of his or her skin to win favour. Sorry, but this is the UK and we, and we alone and not politicians or quangos will decide at the end of the day whats right and whats wrong.

I don't know if this will get to the media, I hope it does. But people like BBC and TalkSport, be aware, with the advent of the internet, you are becoming superfluous TO REQUIREMENTS....../

Its sad Gerrard is like a moaning geriatric, be gracefull in your old footballing age will you , maybe the footballing dementia is creeping in or the inevitable depression, anyway this delusional accusation is not going to change the inevitable. We are better than Liverpool! We was last season and we currently are this season, Sour grapes The redshite seem to be finding it hard to adjust to being awfull. Gerrard, the honeymoon is over you going to go down in history as a nobody.

Don't usually go on other teams' sites but thought I'd look at what the Stoke faithful had made of Gerrard dragging their club into the post-match bickering. Seems that we're not as biased as we thought we were, everyone else really does hate them nearly as much as we do and more than anything wish they'd shut their delusional traps for 5 seconds of the day.

Also good to see we are well regarded by the fans of a club who have no axe to grind either way:

Gerrard would be better advised to worry about how he played rather than phil Neville. My red supporting dad's first comment at watching gerrard live for a long, long time, was 'Christ he's finished, how long have we got him for'. His influence has diminished, and those long driving runs are nearly non existent. I appreciate he flighted in the 2nd goal, but overall he was average IMHO.

His comments on phil Neville, are also laughable given his own diving around on the field (us, Sheffield united,, arsenal, Milan), type it in and google gives you a 6 inch list of his diving.

It is incredible Gerrard can bring up the subject of diving, with all the video evidence out there I would keep my trap firmly shut.

That club is fast becoming a laughing stock, with David Brent for a manager, the Director of Communications threatening their own fans, and Suarez is the most hated man in the P.L. They also let their £35m donkey go out on loan when the twats can't score ! You couldn't make it up.

They also brought the king back to blow £120m - superb.

Liverpool can't handle the fact they are a mid-table side with declining support, a few more years of mamaged decline with these Yanks on board will do nicely.

What's up Stevie G laaar, this year not going to be your's to win the League ?

I would have thought it was obvious to all of us by now, that given the events of July 2009, the words "facts and truth" are never part of any attempt by Steven Gerrard to tell what really happened.

And if I was Tony Pulis, I would be really pleased by this comment to compare his team with the fluid passing team that are Everton. He must be a very happy man. (and hopefully telling his players to kick him off the park next time they meet).

Patrick Murphy
86 Posted 30/10/2012 at 22:44:06
I see that Sylvain Distin is getting some dogs abuse by the loveable reds on his twitter account. This type of behaviour and SG's stupid comments can only add to our team being even more determined to stay in touch at the top end of the table.

With a little luck we might just do that.

Talking about luck Arsenal were dead and buried at Reading being 4-0 down, but somehow they managed to claw it back and go onto win 7-5 after extra-time.

Mark Tanton has it
he's past 30 and knows he'll never win the League. His team started behind Utd and Arsenal, then came the money for Chelski and Citeh, while Spurs, and now Everton are eclipsing his team.

Bitter Reds. I think this is their Cup Final now.

And complaining about an Everton player diving. Laughable, it's quite sad. Let him be hanged by his own words; the football world is looking down on him.

Rantings of a player frustrated by the passing of his own influence and his team's local pre-eminence.

Some fools will lap it up though. Already seen posts that define crosses as 'direct' play (and in some way crude) to bolster the 'accuracy' of his comments.

As far as the stats go, I am willing to bet that those for the first 70 minutes show an even wider gulf between the teams, with them closing the gap in the last 20 when the effort of getting back into the game took its toll on the older legs in our smaller squad.

Thanks to James Martin(#415) for the Stoke City fan site. Here's a taster

"Come on lads, give him a break. He’s just made himself look a complete arse on National TV. Whilst he was running 80 yards and sliding on his knees in front of his own fans, Everton were busy breaking at the other end of the pitch. The daft cunt.

He’s probably made himself look even dafter with these remarks in all fairness, and anyone with a couple of brain cells will pick his comments apart.
He’s slating Everton, who currently sit 5th and have had a great start to the Season, much better than Liverpool’s season so far. He labels them a long ball team when the stats show that Liverpool played more long balls.

He then goes onto criticise an opposition player for diving, when one of his own team mates, Mr Cauliflower Arse himself – Luis Suarez – is the worst culprit of all.

Gerrard is on a downward slope and he’ll be done sooner rather than later. He’s just clutching to a final straw and he’s coming across as an idiot (the influence of Mr Rodgers?) and a desperate fool."

Back o' the net! LOL

I feel Gerrard's comments towards Everton are completely disrespectful. He is the captain of his club and so should show more decorum. We, both the club and the supporters are expected to show respect to all the high profile media attention to the Hillsborough tragedy where I believe we behaved impeccably considering the pressure we are under and how we are scrutinized by the media and at times Liverpool Football Club.

The two points I want to make in my comment is first of all Gerrard wants to check the match statistics on accurate passes and overall possession.

Secondly, I admire Phil Jagielka for being extremely diplomatic and not being drawn into twitter twatter. Personally, I would have just told him to fuck off!

I watched the game with some family friends, who are Red Shite fans, for the first time, and it occured that a lot of their lot are oblivious to the past fuck-ups by refs in this derby, and the many ways Liverpool have bent Everton over in the past (80s Euro ban, 05 Champs League). So it was nice to finally have a smirk as I left after the disallowed goal.

Gerrard's comments don't anger or frustrate me. They please me, as it makes him appear even more like a sour twat. But his comments do make it even more imperative that we go to Anfield later in the season and batter them into the ground.
