After months of wrangling, Everton have finally secured James Garner's future with the club on a long-term contract. The new deal runs through the end of June 2030.

It felt like one of those sagas that might quietly drift toward a disappointing conclusion. For months, the "will-he, won't-he" uncertainty surrounding James Garner’s contract extension has been a nagging subtext to Everton’s season. But today, Everton fans who were desepate for him to stay can breathe a collective sigh of relief.

Everton have finally confirmed that the 24-year-old midfielder has put pen to paper on a new long-term contract, effectively ending the speculation and securing one of the club's most valuable assets for his peak years.

Since arriving from Manchester United, Garner has evolved from a "promising youngster" into the engine room of the side. Whether deployed in his preferred central role or asked to do a shift as right-back, his delivery and work rate have made him an indispensable member of Moyes's first-choice squad.

The "wrangling" mentioned in recent reports likely boiled down to the usual modern football chess match: wage structures versus interest from higher up the table. By securing his signature now, Everton haven’t just kept a player; they’ve protected his market value and sent a signal of intent.

Garner isn't a "flash" player. He won't always grab the headlines with 30-yard screamers, but his intelligence on the ball and his set-piece delivery are the marginal gains that keep Everton competitive. In a period where the club has often been criticized for poor recruitment and letting talent slip away, this feels like an important bit of business that the club has finally got over the line.

After putting pen to paper on a new deal, Garner told evertontv: "I'm really excited to commit my future to Everton.

"I'm very grateful for all the support and all the love I've had over the past three-and-a-half years, but it's just the start.

"I've seen the progress we've made recently. Now I want to be part of that progress and get us back to where the Club deserves to be.

"I feel like I'm now a part of the Club and I'm hoping to be a part of it for a long time.

"I've got family members who are all Evertonians, so I know exactly the passion and, like I've just said, what it means to play for such a massive football club like this.

"The aim this season is to get into Europe — that's what us, as a club – and us as players and staff – should be aiming for. Nothing less.

"I think that's very achievable, and that's what we want for the next season and the seasons after that.

"I'm still only 24. I feel like I've been through a lot of experiences. I want to keep improving. I think the obvious one would be goals and assists, which is the one everyone wants to get better at.

"As well as that, I want to keep that overall consistency, and be a player who people can look to as a leader, setting the right examples.

“The manager has really trusted me – and what he asks of me to do on a game day, it suits exactly how I play. He's been really important since he's come in."

James Garner has committed his long-term future to Everton by signing a new four-and-a-half year contract with the Club until the end of June 2030.

Great to see Garner signing a 4½-year contract.

I wonder if there are any new signings pending?

Phew, better late than never. I believe this will prove to be so worthwhile for all concerned.

Keep building, keep the faith, so many blue bloods deserve a team that includes such talent and effort, desire and commitment, this can keep getting better.

So made up for true blues.

Should be made captain next game.

Seamus and Tarkowski are not the future.

A true Evertonian... Future Captain!

In true blue style, signs after 3 points at Aston Villa, that pretty much ensured another season in the Premier League!

I wouldn’t saddle him with the captaincy just yet, just let him concentrate on continuing to develop, allowing his performances to shape how his teammates respond to whatever authority he wishes to express.

Needs to add a few more goals imo but he's been gear all season.

I was impressed with Rohl last time out also. Keep Gueye on the bench for now...

Signing Jimmy for £9M and booming off Onana for £50M was a right good bit of business if I do say so.

Great news! He is a top class central midfielder and is versatile which is so important today.

Paul Trail in the Evertonia podcast made an important point last week - in Garner and Armstrong we have 2 excellent local lads who could be Everton's midfield mainstays for years to come.

As Gueye steps into the twilight of his career, Everton's midfield could be Garner, Armstrong, Dewsbury-Hall, Rohl and Iroegbunam. A young, energetic, skilful midfield capable of competing with the best in the league.

Si (12),

You don't have to have the captain's armband to be a big influence on the field — Harvey, Kendall, Morrissey, Peter Reid and others proved that.

I said a few weeks back the best bit of business the club could do this window was get James Garner to sign a contract extension.

Under Dyche, he looked just an okay midfield player; under Moyes, he has become the complete all rounder. Don't take my word for it -- James said himself the manager trusts him implicitly and has given him the confidence to become a better player.

I wouldn't be surprised if James is in the next England squad. As for him being captain, I am sure at some point he will be but he influences the team without the armband.

I said a few weeks back for the first time in a long time I am excited about the potential of this side: we have two very good midfield players in Garner and Dewsbury-Hall, with Rohl and Armstrong as back up, Ndaiye up top.

I don't know what will happen now over Grealish, whether we can send him back to City and look for a replacement in the summer or sign him permanently in the summer.

Barry is improving; we will know by the end of the season if he has improved enough to be our main striker next season; Aznou will have had more experience.

We have England's keeper and England centre-back in Branthwaite, paired with a very promising centre-back in O'Brien.

This is a great bit of business by the club.

He isn't flashy and goes about his business on the park as well as any midfielder in the league.

His development at Man Utd has enabled him to compete with some of the best players in the Premier League.

It wouldn't surprise me if he got into the England World Cup squad.

Si #12, I totally disagree. I believe he's already older than Ratters was when he became the youngest captain to lift the FA Cup.

I don't like goalkeepers as captains and neither Tarkowski nor Coleman would be considered a guaranteed starter with a full squad next season.

Garner is one of the few outfield players who is going to be playing every match he is available. It's time for another era-defining dynasty at the club. We've waited long enough. Give him the captaincy and build the team around him.

Player of the season to date.

The contract is enough for me... captaincy for another day.
There should be 11 leaders in any team, some through shouting; some through example.

"Wrangling" ? So you were privy to private meetings? come on! Who knows the time scale and discussions that take place?

Moving on, what a clanger Ten Hag or whoever at Man Utd who was responsible for James Garner's sale to Everton, and for a measly £9-15M its been reported.

We now have a super midfield player who has outshone Gibbs-White and Anderson at Forest twice, been the best player on the pitch at Villa.

I also expect him to get an England call-up, he cannot be ignored. An ideal squad player who is not only an exceptional midfield player but is a great dead-ball deliverer who can also cover both full-back positions.

I would love to see him come on and partner Rice in England's midfield and I believe, given the chance, he will give Tuchel some selection headaches.

It looks like he is a true Evertonian now and credit and thanks should go to Everton for getting this contract over the line.

Some positive news about the club going forward; it also shows that we are becoming a very attractive proposition as part of "the project".

He's currently leading the midfielder stats in the whole league. Huge credit to him and the manager.

I'm not sure he's captain material though. I think for that you want someone who is unaffected by events on the pitch, who has real underlying strength of character.

I think only Tarkowsi and Coleman fit the bill on that score.

I forget he's only 24!! He's got a lot of experience now for a 24-year-old, he's been through a lot with the club and come through it a better player.

Played for Everton, Nottm Forest, Man Utd and Watford. Battles against relegation, winning promotion, U21 Euros winner... All this now paying off for him and us.

With Dewsbury-Hall, Garner, Armstrong, Ndiaye, Barry, O'Brien, Branthwaite, Rohl and Aznou, there's a nucleus of a young developing side here now. This is why we need to be patient with young players we've got!

Dave (23), that was definitely a big part of my reasoning. Captaincy isn’t for everyone and some big characters seem to prefer not to have (and certainly don’t need) the ‘accolade’.

Martin (26), I didn’t say it couldn’t be soon, I just don’t see that it has to be right now.

Jimmy reminds me very much of Howard Kendall as a player. Howard wasn’t an immediate hit when he signed as a young lad but he worked hard and was the perfect fit in the best midfield 3 I’ve ever seen. To have him for 4 years is a great signing.
