McGeady could be heading to the northeast

Aiden McGeady could finally be on his way out of Everton on a permanent basis, with both Sunderland and Middlesbrough reportedly keen on acquiring his services.

The Republic of Ireland international spent the majority of last season on loan at Preston North End having been informed early on by incoming Blues boss Ronald Koeman that there would be no place for him in the first team at Goodison Park.

There was talk of McGeady perhaps staying at Deepdale this coming season with a full contract on offer there but with PNE boss Simon Grayson moving to relegated Sunderland to succeed David Moyes, the Stadium of Light looks to be a more likely destination.

McGeady was named Preston's player of the season for 2016-17 and Boro, also newly demoted from the Premier League, might want him to bolster their hopes of making a swift return to the top flight.

McGeady joined Everton in January 2014 from Spartak Moscow for a nominal fee but has played just 32 times in the league for the Toffees, scoring just once. He has one year remaining on the 4½-year contract he signed at the time.
